Could someone explain how society, status and reputation works...
Does society refer to society as a whole or a smaller social group?
Is status in reference to one's standing in the over all community or only monetary status? 'Cause I don"t understand how Bihari and VP are brothers but Bihari's status is different. In a familial group isn't the family's status dependent on the whole family not a single member?
And the big question reputation...
Is the families reputation based on the actions of an individual or the overall contribution of the family to society as a whole?😕
I kinda fall into the MacCarthy thing myself...
Beware of Artist
they mix with all classes of society and are therefore the most dangerous.
And all I can say to that is "THANK GOD"

Here you go gmhatcher

Could someone explain how society, status and reputation works...
  • Does society refer to society as a whole or a smaller social group?
[Shridevi] - it is always a group defined by its purpose of existence. So if purpose of interaction is religious on an example basis for characters from this show, then society is Hindu Bihari Kshatriya Community and guided by its customs and rules. If purpose of interaction is to realize ambitions...Social Upscaling, then society is group of HAVES...The Powers That Be.

  • Is status in reference to one's standing in the over all community or only monetary status? 'Cause I don"t understand how Bihari and VP are brothers but Bihari's status is different. In a familial group isn't the family's status dependent on the whole family not a single member?
[Shridevi] -It is always in reference to the context of the one who is Judging you, For ex: I am looking at an illiterate person. I being educated and if I trying to judge him for his academic knowledge, then of course status is not equal match between us.
Specifically answering Vidya and Bihari, though brothers sharing the same family compound and maintain all family relations in appearance, economically they have separate lives...independent of each other...so they evolved differently on monetary level.
Their status is common only to the extent they interact together at group level.

  • And the big question reputation... Is the families reputation based on the actions of an individual or the overall contribution of the family to society as a whole?😕
[Shridevi] - Individual Member actions to any group affect the reputation of the group. Therefore group dynamics try to maintain group objectives through enforcing group organization, group communication and adherence to group agenda and objectives. The collective strength of group always is a message to the larger community around the group.
In that token, an individual's note-worthy act of good makes the family proud, act of bad causes the family disrepute.
Overall the number of +vemarks and number of -ve marks of a family on a comparitive basis makes it a reason to become exemplary to the rest of society in either directions.

I kinda fall into the MacCarthy thing myself...

[Shridevi] -
😆 😆 I do not know MacCarthy to comprehend what you say, but I get the gist when you say mixing all classes of society. Boy !! that is dangerous to me. I wouldn't be able to breathe and will try to find shelter in my group as soon as I can. It is like being lost in a MELA...lost in a fair. After all, I am a human being and therefore a social animal and so try to bind myself to a group that thinks and functions like me. That is the foremost existential security I need.
