She felt that this was the last time that she would see his face. So she knelt down near him keeping her elbow on the recliner and her palm underneath her chin. She looked at his calm face illuminated by a beam of moonlight that entered the room through the glass door of the poolside. When he smiled at her she used to feel that he looked the best when he was smiling. And when he shouted at her her legs would turn to jelly at the sight of his burning eyes. They made her feel as if he could see her soul. She would correct herself then. Arnavji looked the best when he was angry.
But she was utterly stupid in thinking that. Sleep made him look like an absolute angel. She felt as if she could stare at him for an eternity and never feel tired. She watched as the wind played with his hair causing it to move. A few strands fell onto his forehead. Smiling she leaned forward and swept his hair to one side. He had the annoying habit of applying something.. yes.. gel on it. How she wished he wouldn't
Suddenly he turned around. Now he was almost face to face with her. Sleep was the only thing which took away the frown from his face. It was a temporary thing but it was definitely appreciated by her. But now he looked disturbed. He muttered something which sounded like 'don't' to her. She decided that he was having a bad dream. Reflexively she moved her hand to his face as if her touch would drive his nightmare away. But she stopped herself just in time. She didn't want him to wake up and spoil her plans.
Tick tick'her time was almost up. She realized that these were her last moments as Arnav Singh Raizada's wife. The six months were over. She was going to leave him for good. He had intended to make it hell for her, to make her suffer. But somehow he had failed. Or had he won? His 6 months would make her suffer for an entire lifetime. She shuddered. The clock struck twelve and a tear rolled down her cheek simultaneously. Tearing her gaze away from his face she walked towards her already packed bag. Again, she had left the stars for him. She knew that she wouldn't be able to sleep without it but it didn't matter . She wasn't about to get much sleep anyway.
She promised herself that she wouldn't look at him again. There was no use postponing this. She knew that if she saw his face again she wouldn't be able to leave. Or worse she might break down..she felt as if her tears would wake up not just Arnavji but the entire house. She didn't want to start. Just as she reached the door she felt something or someone pulling her duppatta. Her eyes widened.
This has happened thrice before. Once it was a plant and then it was his seat belt that was responsible but another time it was something much more attractive. Or rather someone. She closed her eyes feeling her breathing growing increasingly irregular. After what seemed to her like an hour she turned around to face him.
There was no one behind her. She looked around the room wildly. Arnav was sleeping. On the recliner. But then what'?
Her eyes fell on the end of her duppatta. It had gotten stuck in the middle of his half closed laptop. She tugged at it trying to break free barely aware of the tears that were flowing down her face. She fell down on her knees not able to fight anymore. She leaned and placed her head on the same glass table on which his laptop was kept. She sobbed, watching her tears fall on the table. Glass on glass. She clamped a hand on her mouth trying not to disturb him. On second though the rest of his family too. But she was too late.
"Khushi..?"he said softly. He sounded sleepy and disoriented. She had woke him up. She tried to stop her tears but she realised she couldn't. She dug her fingers into the table in her effort to stop but it was impossible for her. She closed her eyes, not wanting to see his reaction on finding her like this.
"Khushi!" he was getting closer to her. She could hear his footsteps getting closer to her. Concern laced his voice. She couldn't blame him for it.
Suddenly she felt his breath on her face.' Dhak dhak' her heart was beating. Didn't it know that it had no right to? After all the contract period had expired. She felt his palm on her soft cheek. Slowly he made her tilt her head so that she was facing him now.
"Open your eyes Khushi" he whispered.
She shook her head vigorously and threw her arms around his neck, burying her face into his chest.
He stiffened.
She knew that he was remembering the day when she had hugged him like this. The hospital' ...she had ran into his arms then..
"I can't Ar..Arnavji'.I just can't'" She wailed. She had said the same words then too. But then she had meant the pain of losing her Babuji. And now she was saying the same words about him. She can't be without him.
She listened as he laughed softly. Slowly he wrapped his arms around her.
"If you can't khushi..then don't."
