Adoor Bhasi, Bahadur, Sankarady, Kuthiravattom Pappu and Jagathy Sreekumar ' these are five legendary comedians who have given their all to make Mollywood's audience laugh. Yet, their stellar contributions are slowly being forgotten.
Now, as a tribute of sorts to Mollywood's comic icons, Urumi scribe Shanker Ramakrishnan has announced his next project, Ente Satyanveshana Parikshakal (ESP), which stars Suraj Venjaramoodu in the lead role.
Ironically, the director says he's already received flak for his choice of the lead actor. "People told me this was a bad decision. Some asked me if I was trying to resurrect Suraj's career; others thought it was my attempt to ensure he wins a National Award. But, why not Suraj? He's relatively young and he's got the potential," says Shanker.
Suraj too seems upbeat. "It's an extremely challenging character and definitely different from the comic roles I portray. The role is demanding as it entails the emotional and psychological travails of a man whom society has labelled as a comedian. I am humbled to be part of the team," he says.
Shanker says, "Usually there is a huge difference between the individual's real personality and the kind of image that Mollywood's comedians build over the years by playing humourous roles. ESP is a take on the depression that is part of a comedian's psyche. The film will also feature some of Mollywood's veteran actors."
The recently released teaser posters have already peaked interest among the online community, especially the one with a blow-your-mind gesture and another featuring half-naked women.
"They are concept posters to gauge the audience's reactions. Unlike most movies, the scenes in these posters are actually part of film and we want to know how people react to it," says Shanker. ESP will be directed by debutant Subil and will have wildlife photographer Paul Bathery as its cinematographer.
