Kochi Times hung out with actress Manisha Koirala on the sets of her Malayalam film Edavapathy that is currently being shot at Munnar. The actress, who has lost oodles of weight recently, was looking calm and relaxed as she took time off to chat before she was called for a shot. Excerpts…
Edavapathy is your second Malayalam film. Is it very different from your last outing — Elektra?
I was sceptical about taking up Elektra. At that time, I felt it was too early for me to play a mother onscreen. But then, I thought, let me just take it as an actor. I play a mother in Edavapathy too. But both these characters are totally different. One good thing about Mollywood is that, you get to play so many shades. There's no repetition. I enjoy working here.
You took a break when you were
at the peak of your career. What
kept you away?
I have been part of the industry for over 20 years now. But I admit I got a bit disoriented after a point. I went on a travelling spree. Though, I am back now.
Has the film industry changed between then and now?
It has. I saw a totally different tinsel town when I returned. There's a wave of change in Bollywood, and it is a great time for artistes and directors. It's the race for the good. Now, it doesn't have to be a hero/heroine film. It's the time of the talented.
Are you looking forward to play different roles for the big screen?
I want to do some super challenging roles. As an artist, I want to grow. I don't have to prove myself as an actor anymore. Now, I am looking for creative satisfaction. I'm far more focused now. To me, each and every shot matters and I need to feel good about my work.
Is there any truth in the rumour that director Madhur Bhandarkar's next may be loosely based on your life?
I can't speak for someone else. I hope Madhur knows me well enough if he is making a film based on my life.
So you will watch Heroine to find out if it is true?
No! My life is far more interesting. In any case, I have too much on my platter now.
You've been an actor and producer. What's next on the cards?
I am planning to direct a film. But I don't know when yet. I only know that it will surely be a female-oriented subject.
