Or, say, shows that vary from focusing on road trips to using dance for helping relationships, or making music out of natural sounds? We have come a long way from the times when the GECs were content airing simple reality shows that would provide for complete family entertainment.
Channels today are flooded with reality shows that focus exclusively on the youth and cater to their interests. From simple singing, dancing or adventure and relationship based reality shows, channels have now forayed into exploring different angles of the already used concepts and creating something completely new out of it. Some of the new shows which are made keeping young brains in mind include Road Diaries, Gumrah -The End of Innocence, Sound Trippin and Live Out Loud.
What's making channels focus so much on young blood? Shalini Seth, programming head of a popular youth channel, says, "Our strategy is to engage youngsters in different things so that we can connect to them more. We want them to rock more. In one show, we help them to transform themselves and give them a platform to sort out their relationship troubles. In another, we give some youngsters, who are over-achievers, an opportunity to be a part of their own country and explore it."
Agrees anchor Natasha Suri, "Today's youngsters are energetic. We only want to convey to them that life is now or never and they shouldn't delay things that they want to do."
Given the vast talent pool in our country, tapping young talent assumes utmost importance. Music composer Sneha Khanwalkar says, "When we hear any music, we wonder about the process, how the lyrics are written and whether the tune was made first or not. I wanted interested people to see this entire process of music-making and also reach the smaller towns, where people are talented but not very tech-savvy." But it's not all dance/music and relationships that rule the platter for adolescents. Variety is the buzzword here. Amidst a few regular crime shows, there is a show which focuses on teenage crime. Anchor Karan Kundra says,
"This is an offbeat concept, which has not been dealt with earlier. I wanted to do a show based on crimes committed by youngsters, which sheds some light on their psychology. It is important to enlighten the current generation against such crimes."
Only time will tell whether targeting the young lot with such shows is going to generate TRPs. For now, 'hatke' is hot, what say?
