Part 4: The remains of the day

She tucked her hair behind and stood by the bay window holding the red cup while her nail slowly ran over the embossed Minnie's ears. Everything looked small from the 29th floor, like ants moving about with a buzz from where she stood and she saw that New York went about doing its business without a care that she was here. She smiled taking a sip and waited for Meera to show up, waiting to find a little friendly familiarity in the vastly alienating city.

Picking up her still antiquated phone that still wheezed every now and then with a shake while retrieving a text message, she contemplated calling Dev. But after much thought, she put her phone down and breathed out thinking about how her first day at office had flitted by eventfully. Much too eventful for a day it had been, with her not sitting down in any one place for more than an hour at a time. She'd met more people than she could remember, taken down notes enough for a year's worth of work, committed to memory office cubes that spanned over 10 floors and then sat for a full one hour meeting with him...

Little was left of the evening light streaming through the windows and as she looked down, her curl escaped again from behind her ear and fell forward. She began tracing her finger over the long curl and even as she was taking it away from her face, she halted mid-way and drew her palm down instantly when it swept past her eyes, eying it as if she was seeing the white flat plains of her hand for the first time.

"Hi...I'm Maan..." he'd shook her hand.

And that voice in her head came back as a strong recollection, recreating with its effect the nervous thrum of the room she'd entered that morning, the small shiver that had ever so surprisingly shook her when she'd remembered him from the airport, the pulse at her throat that'd been loud enough to make her forget her words to greet him and the sudden shake in her fingers, the confusion that had dragged on until the last of the second not knowing if she should indeed shake his hand when he'd extended his towards her.

There had been that suave grooming, the light but decisively trimmed stubble, his light blue shirt smugly fitting his shoulders and caving inwards to reveal a V torso and as if to remind her he was just as human as she was he'd had a plain restlessness in the ease he'd shown around her. If anything there was always the one full look he'd given her when she'd entered the room and the momentary meeting of his resigned expectant gaze when after Yash had told of the little mix-up at the front desk to go by remembering her first day at work for a long time. Until Yash had showed up she'd not known what to make of one word he'd said, expect that he was keenly focused on establishing something personal besides the obvious professional relationship that would exist. In those moments she'd been immensely irritated with her own self when she'd only been curious on why he would choose to be mildly pleasant with her, without having questioned his motives when it came to his needless discounting ways with her extension. Going over his words much later had revealed in its promising patience and a confused eagerness that he'd hope to achieve something lasting with whoever he'd expected her to be.

Supposedly, she was already convinced of his intentions even before she'd left the office building for the day when at their 1.30 PM meeting he'd not so much as looked in her direction, practicing a bearable indifference towards her. But again, there had been that small nod, a faint acknowledgement when he'd closed his laptop standing at the head of the meeting room and the brief meeting of their eyes right before he'd turned towards the room exit. In those moments of suspended awareness, when they were in the know of each others gaze on the other, there had also been an abruptly growing pull to look away. It was what had happened then at the airport and at times at office drawing an uncalled for emphasis altogether when it could have been just as cursory.

It worried her even so that she thought about it at length and in such great detail. But who wouldn't when there was a threat of having exposed something - even if only mindlessly - in those seconds...

And yet, there was the question of what he saw then?

Babaji! It didn't even feel wrong...when she wasn't even the kind who noticed men slapdash.

Meera came in bursting through the door, whistling as a kettle.

"Oh! lord...I need the heater first, then everything else..." She went to stand directly over the stubby radiator by the far corner of the room.

Given that they practically shared cubes at office, they'd already covered much of her day's experiences at office when Meera had dropped by her cube to tell her that she was staying behind at office for another hour and it was only obvious Meera went onto to ascertain her lack of cheerfulness wasn't over her new arrangement with Dev.

"Please don't tell me you are already missing Dev..." Meera rolled her eyes and she turned in profile to smile at her good friend who was more determined than Dev himself for delivering her of his thoughts.

"Meera..." She intended to evade that question, hoping that Meera would let it be, "Is there a gym in the building? I'm thinking of working off the awkwardness from the first-day-in-your-space-syndrome"

Meera titled her head with a heavy sigh, "Oh! please...what is there to be awkward about?...And the gym is on the 37th floor. Here take my keys for the keypass" She took the keys and disappeared into her room for a while leaving Meera to draw her much needed heat into her body that the NY cold had sucked dry.

The key ring jingled as she got out the apartment door after having dressed up in gym attire.

Oh! she could use the exhaustion, she thought, when her body felt like an endless pool of energy despite having had a marathon run though of her first day at work, when it continuously fueled her annoying preoccupation. 37th floor it was...

Hasini 🤗...thank u for updating and not skipping the blue shirt part totally...why do i feel there was more to it...anyway loved reading Geet's pov of their meeting and her first day...it was just like what any normal girl would have thought...it must have been weird the way he was talking and looking in an business environment...why he did that we all know...hmmm she saw resigned acceptance in his look...all the eyelocks and feelings did not feel wrong to her...interesting...thank god she did not call that idiot Dev...awesome writing once again...could literally visualise the cold and busy New York life...me now waiting for the gym scene 😃
