Good public speaking skills is a much needed skills in the competitive world. If you want to be a good leader, you need to have great public speaking skills. Do you agree?

Yet, public speaking is feared more than death itself. So my questions is.. why do you think are people afraid of public speaking? What makes a great speaker different from rest of the speaker? Do you get nervous if you're told to come out and give a speech? :D

No one is born as a leader, situations make them a leader...the whole world is full of beggars...all trying to find attention...if they are friendly, respectful, of course that is far better but now a days a leader cannot survive without people paying attention to them..I believe a real leader dont need anybodys attention, people start feeling their charisma, bcos charisma is the radiation of their individuality... They start feeling tht he is somebody special, unique although they cant pinpoint where his uniqueness is, what it is that attracts like a magnet..😊
Due to the shortage of gr8 leaders, I have decided to follow myself... 😛

- I agree a leader definitely requires good public speaking skills besides honesty, hard work, sincerity, commitment, respect, discipline, selfless nature, sense of duty, education, wisdom, clean record, etc. If one has those then public is willing to forgive lack of good speaking skills. lol
- I think there is a barrier in our mind which holds us from speaking in front of public. The fear is how am I looking or too many looking at me, too many judging me, too many waiting to find flaws in me, will they laugh at me, what are they thinking, is my voice coming out as right lol and then sometimes it just nervousness which one cannot explain. That barrier needs to be crossed in order to be a good speaker. Sometimes experience of doing it again and again can help you cross that barrier.
Example, Think of public speaking as a train lol
Train 1 = Not a speaker. This is like a train without wheels and steam. Its ability is unknown
Train 2= A great speaker: This train leaves on time, stops at all stations, is neat and clean and reaches its destination safe and sound.
Train 3= A bad speaker. This is the worst of 3. hmmm..lets pick SRK. That guy is a speaker but he is like a train with no destination. His speeches are incoherent, sometimes vulgar and full of himself. It is a train to nowhere. In the end what happens is a train wreck and this is one wreck where passengers are happy that it happened. lol
Point above was that even speaking does not matter. A great speaker does not mean the ability to speak only. Once you have crossed this barrier then thats only step 1. Hope I made my point here lol
- No I am not a good speaker. I lack there.

Surprisingly enough, my public speaking improved after endless chatting on the forums, as I learned how to organize my thoughts. I guess it wasn't such a waste of time ,as my communication skills has improved manifold.

Defo one of the most important skills in the business world. You wouldn't get past the second stage of any finance related job if you don't display those skills. Strangely enough, I quite enjoy public speaking. I think it's because I'm used to performing to a large audience. That doesn't mean I don't get nervous before giving a presentation or before a stage show but over time, you learn to put a bit of confidence in yourself. A great speaker doesn't waffle, they stick to the point and present their views in a direct and concise way.

People fear it because they're worried about people's reactions and being judged. Honestly though, sometimes public speaking skills is all about being able to BS your way through any situation lol. You could be speaking absolute crap but do it with a bit of confidence and most people will believe what you're saying! lol

I think Obama is probably one of the best examples. He has brilliant public speaking skills and it really does work in his favour.

in todays' world, you definitely need to have good public speaking skills.. your dedication and your work ethics are valued, but you need to be able to present yourself! to be a good leader, good public speaking skills are a start. that is what wins them the elections.. infact (this is my personal opinion), most of the leaders who are voted are voted because they are able to market themselves better even if they may not have the best of the credentials. public can be a real sucker for words!
😆 i think people fear that if nobody will agree with them, they might look like a fool.. or they may say the wrong thing or their words may be misinterpreted.. or it could be just self-consciousness.. it really depends from person to person.. some people are just natural public speakers and kahin bhi shru ho jaate hain!
i think it's the ability of that person to make others relate.. that really is magical.. when someone is saying something and others are attracted to their words, even if they may not like the person too much! someone above mentioned SRK.. i actually think he's a great speaker (though, i despise his vulgar jokes - they are a huge put off).. however, when he speaks.. he has the ability to hold your attention.. saw his speech he gave at some university.. the man really is well spoken.. rarity in bollywood!
i am not much of a politics person, but Obama is definitely well spoken.. there doesn't seem to be too much pretence.. i've only seen a few of his speeches (which I had no choice in, as they interrputed the program i was watching).. 😆

One needs to be confident in their own ability to speak and the subject matter that is being spoken about. The first will come with practice, the second with making sure you know what you're talking about...

i think most people are afraid of public speaking because they are afraid that they might make a mistake and will be laughed at by the listeners... they have this fear of being insulted by others... and this fear in turn leads to lack of self confidence...

you can only overcome this if you have enough confidence in yourself... yes you may make mistake but then who doesnt? theres nothing to be embarrassed about ..you just need to know what you are talking about and dont be afraid to give your opinions..

Public speaking increases my heart beat when i am the next person to get onto the stage but again once i am on and i grab the mike ... it is do or die ... take a deep breath and just dive in ...

My ideal public speaker would be Hitler... As dark as the man was , he had the greatest command on is speaking capability ... hence the history ...

PS: Topic maker - Ur DP is highly distracting , i cant resist but to go back to the movie scene and laugh.

'Practice makes you perfect'

It is an overused though true phrase.Same with public speaking. When we talked in the class out teacher used to say this 'Its easier to talk like a stud in front of your friends.Try doing it in front of two hundred people'

That used to effectively shut us up.

It is natural to be nervous, not only during public speaking but even in interviews. The reason is simple- we are pushed out of our comfort zone.So if we step out of our comfort zone constantly and push ourselves we gain more and more confidence.
