While they mesmerised the kids in Hatim, they are now going to recreate an era from the past with their latest offering —Prithviraj Chauhan Dharti Ka Vir Yodha. A two palace-sets, symbolising Ajmer and Kanauj palaces, have been built in Baroda.

To recreate the magic of ancient times an artificial lake and a desert have also been created. Around 200 workers have laboured to build those palaces. Artists from Rajasthan have created the miniature paintings. Hope the script and the screenplay are equally colourful as the sets.

Prithviraj Chauhan to hit television

Spin legend Bishen Singh Bedi and his wife could barely control their emotion as their son Angad strode majestically into New Delhi's Oberoi hotel on Tuesday. He was dressed for his lead role in the television series on the 12th century Rajput king Prithviraj Chauhan. "Our good wishes are with him and we hope he succeeds as he is putting in a lot of hard work in an unknown field," Bedi told rediff.com. "When I was offered this role a year ago," said Angad, "I discussed it with my family before agreeing to do it. It means a lot of hard work of course, but I am sure I will succeed." The young man initially wanted to play cricket like his dad, but his efforts on that front didn't pay off.

Angad as Prithviraj Chauhan and Parivah as Rani Sanyogita during a press conference to launch the serial Dharti Ka Veer Yodha - Prithviraj Chauhan in New Delhi on Tuesday.

Prithviraj Chauhan ascended to the throne when he was just 13. He was fascinated by the beauty of Sanyogita, the daughter of the king of Kannauj, and whisked her away from her swayamwar, an act of derring-do celebrated through the ages.

In the 12th century, when Hindustan came under attack from Arab and Turkish invaders, Prithviraj Chauhan rose to power as the Rajput kings united under him to fight off an invasion by Mohammad Ghori.

Commending the efforts of the late Ramanand Sagar?s family -- the people behind the serial -- Vice-President Bhairon Singh Shekhawat asked them to consider making serials on other powerful personalities in Indian history like Rana Pratap and Chhattrapati Shivaji.

It will trace the life of the great king from birth to death," Prem Sagar told rediff.com. "The scale of the show is immense as it captures not just the nuances of his love for Sanyogita but the ferocity of his battles with Mohammad Ghori as well. It is being directed by the young duo of Shakti and Amrit Sagar."

A lot of hard work has gone into designing the costumes for each character. Credit for this goes to Nisha Sagar and Neerushaa, both of whom spent months doing research, visiting places associated with Prithviraj Chauhan and reading books on the era.

"We divided our work into two parts," said Nisha Sagar, "I was doing the costumes for the main characters. I spent hours, sometimes days, going into details of each costume. I looked for pearls and precious stones. We have a huge budget for costumes."

Although the other stars were also present, it was Angad Bedi who held the attention of the media.

"I am tall and have the additional advantage of a tough body," he said with a smile, as he hugged his grandmother and planted a kiss on her forehead.

Bad tunes for Prithviraj Chauhan

Things keep getting bigger and bigger, if not necessarily better. Case in the point: Star Plus launching the music of its magnum opus TV serial, Dharti Ka Veer Yodha Prithviraj Chauhan.

The score is helmed by Ravindra Jain, who, besides scoring the music for Ramanand Sagar's Ramayana, has created lilting melodies for movies like Ram Teri Ganga Maili, Henna and Chitchor. What you get is al album that alternates between bhajans and romantic tunes. Jain also pens the lyrics, which are inconsistent and uninspired.

Who was Prithviraj Chauhan?

The opening track begins hailing the great king and his legendary tale of love and valour. Reminiscent of the ethnic treatment A R Rahman imparted on Mangal Mangal (Mangal Pandey), this is a fairly cheerful composition, thanks to Shahid Malliya's lively singing.

In the monotonous plea, O Vidhaaata, Prithviraj's parents -- King Someshwara Chauhan and wife Karpuravalli -- pray fervently for a child. God obliges. And that means it's lullaby time for baby Prithviraj. Sadhana Sargam's gentle crooning of Raj Dulare So Ja is appealing, but the stereotypical nature of this composition isn't.

Ajoy Chakraborty regales with his classical rendition of Uttaradhikari. The play of sitar and beats in the arrangement is effective and adds to the track's intensity.

Prithviraj Chauhan to hit television

The normally effervescent Udit Narayan sounds tedious as he painstakingly grieves about love in Sunn Re Megha. Shreya Ghosal lends adequate support to its notes though.

Jai Bholenath sticks out like a sore thumb -- a typical film song reducing a historic figure to a roadside Romeo. It's hard to digest a dancing Prithviraj requesting the Almighty to help him stage a rendezvous with his dream girl.

Suresh Wadkar's melodious voice makes the philosophy and poetry of Mitti an attractive experience.

By and large, the music of Prithviraj Chauhan is strictly functional, never imaginative. Steeply priced at Rs 195 (per CD), then, it's hardly worth a buy.

Star to air serial on Prithviraj Chauhan

Star Plus will air a new teleserial Dharti Ka Veer Yodha - Prithviraj Chauhan from May 12.

Produced by the late Ramanand Sagar's sons, Subhash Sagar, Prem Sagar and Jyoti Sagar under the banner of Sagar Arts international, which has given to television such historicals as Ramayana, Sri Krishna and Vikram Aur Betaal, the mega historical series, traces the life of the Rajput ruler from birth till death.

Gracing the event for the launch of the megaserial, Vice President Bhairon Singh Shekhawat lauded the role of television in spreading tremendous awareness about India's rich cultural heritage and Historical legacy. & nbsp; & nbsp; & nbsp; & nbsp; & nbsp; & nbsp; & nbsp; & nbsp;

Actors of Dharti Ka Veer Yodha-Prithviraj Chauhan, Jas Arora, Angad Bedi (C) playing Prithviraj Chauhan, Parivah and Sunila Karambekar at the function of the launch of the serial in New Delhi on Tuesday, May 9, 2006.

Admitting to being an ardent follower of serials like Ramayan, produced by the late Ramanand Sagar, and the recent Saibaba, made by Prem Sagar, Shekhawat said,"serials like Ramayana and Saibaba have made an immense contribution in bringing, India's historical legacy and the rich cultural heritage out of the confines of the history books".

"Books can only be read and understood by a limited section of people whereas these TV serials on the lives of Lord Rama and Saibaba can be understood by one and all."

"For example, Ramayana infused a sort of "cultural revival" in the whole of India, with the people of all ages and sections leaving aside all their work to watch religiously the life of Lord Rama on TV," Mr Shekhawat said.

Describing Prithviraj Chauhan as among the biggest warriors in India's history, Mr Shekhawat said,"most of us must have read about the life of Prithviraaj Chauhan in history books.

However, watching the life of the great warrior through a TV serial would effectively bring out the grandeur and magnificence characterising his life which was full of instances of bravery, duty and patriotism,"he said.

Conceptualised by Moti Sagar and Anand Sagar and directed by Shakti Sagar, the series, the serial will be aired every week from Friday to Sunday at 9.00 pm.

It will have newcomer Angad Bedi (son of cricketer Bishen Singh Bedi) play the title role of Prithviraj Chauhan, actress Parivah in the role of Prithviraj's beloved Sanyogita, model-turned actor Jas Arora in the role of Prithviraaj's father Someshwar, Milind Gunaji in the role of Kannauj king Vijaypal and actor Nirmal Pandey.
