Akshar Media Productions' The Hangman in English, featuring Om Puri, Gulshan Grover, Smita Jaykar, Shreyas Talpade and Tom Alter, is scheduled for release all over India on August 18.
It is a story of a hangman who has executed more than 100 men. Forced into a line of work which his father and forefathers were born into, Shiva battles the social stigma which surrounds his profession. Wherever he goes, silence follows. He is overwhelmed by a guilty conscience, repenting his inevitable after-life. Shiva wants to make his simple dream come true like his son Ganesh getting a better life. Ganesh moves to the city, is educated, and earns honest wages working as a teacher.
When a new convict is on death row, Shiva is plagued once again with preparations for a death. But this hanging is unlike the ones before. Om Puri gives a compelling performance as the aged and tired executioner. The film has been produced by Bipin Patel and is directed by Vishal Bhandari.
