Director: Vivek Agnihotri
Cast: Paoli Dam, Gulshan Devaiya, Nikhil Dwivedi

Hate stories are as common to Bollywood as love stories. But more often than not the revenge-seeking protagonist is a male. When the female species come to fore, we have often seen formula over fiction and skin over substance. Hate Story isn't much different from such films that dominated in the 80s and 90s. It has just upgraded to modern times with more passion and less compassion.

Kavya (Paoli Dam) does a sting operation against a corporate house, maligning their name in the market. The company head, Siddharth (Gulshan Devaiya) seeks revenge and befriends Kavya only to exploit her physically and subsequently betray her. Now Kavya seeks revenge and decides to use her sexual charm to destroy his business empire.

The story gets to the point from start and the pacing is crisp to the point that you don't lose the narrative despite its predictability. This wounded woman's vengeance drama dates back to films like Rekha's Khoon Bhari Maang (1988). Vikram Bhatt's screenplay treads in the conventional zone but is woven with enough dramatic moments and director Vivek Agnihotri handles most of it with the requisite finesse.

However the plot gives in to undue sensationalism with Kavya's quest to be the 'topmost prostitute of the town', just so that she could get back to her tormentor. Further she takes lessons in lovemaking from some elite escort (Bhairavi Goswami in a padded bra) and you keep wondering what her approach for avenging is. Until she plans to seduce everyone from the CEO to the CM with her vital stats to get vital information against Siddharth's company. And every male in the movie seems to be a compulsive womanizer, making Kavya's quest as convenient as a cakewalk. Thereby the female-centric film turns into a Julie-meets-Corporate plot in its second half.

Hate Story uses lovemaking as its potent tool and there's sufficient skin on show though in sync with the story. As lust takes over love, the aesthetic intimacy is taken over by kinky and sleazy sessions. Vivek Agnihotri balances the skin-show as per the requisite scene-tone. Though Kavya's overblown sensuality reeks of her overconfidence, the larger idea is to show that female sexuality could be stronger than male, muscle or money power. Thankfully the film doesn't merely bank upon the sex-quotient. Rather some contrived corporate war dominates the second half with sensuality working as breathers.

Though the pacing drops in second half, the overall editing is efficient. Cinematography is good. However better dialogues could have added to the drama.

The film largely relies on its female lead both in terms of its performance and physicality. While Paoli Dam doesn't disappoint one bit on the latter aspect, she is not bad in terms of her acting abilities either. She doesn't incite the pathos that one could fervently feel for her character's plight. But though her act is not accomplished, she manages to pull off her role quite well. Gulshan Devaiya as the negative lead puts in a compelling act. Even in the stammering cliche attributed to his character, he tries to bring in some conviction. Nikhil Dwivedi features almost in an extended special appearance but is decent enough as Kavya's support system.

Modern as it may appear from its body, Hate Story is old-school at heart. Watch it for its body or heart - whatever suits you better. Love them, hate them, you can't ignore them!

Verdict: Above Average

Hate Story
By Taran Adarsh, 20 Apr 2012, 08:42 hrs IST
HATE STORY. Its very first promo became the topic of discussion, went viral, managed to scandalize one and all with its audacious and explicit essence. Outrageous and shocking, the promo hit you like a ton of bricks, generating heat and hullabaloo due to its unconcealed sexuality, making it the most discussed promo on social networking sites that day of the week. In fact, the distribution rights of the film were picked up instantly thanks to the remarkable influence of this promo.

Vikram Bhatt [he's penned the story] falls back on the formula of the 1970s and 1980s, when vendetta fares ruled the roost. In HATE STORY, the protagonist seeks vengeance and uses her sexuality as a weapon to settle scores with the wrong-doers. A compelling plot that has the potential to keep the viewer captivated, the film tantalizes and teases the spectator thanks to the intrepid dare bare scenes by Paoli Dam, but is quite unpersuasive at certain junctures as well.

The story revolves around Kaavya [Paoli Dam] and her transformation from a simple middle class journalist to a sex worker to seek revenge. Kaavya, who doesn't have anything to lose anymore, uses her sexuality as a lethal weapon to rip Siddharth [Gulshan Devaiah] apart by using everyone connected to him one way or another. Thus begins the journey of hatred and brutal vengeance.

This affects everyone around Kaavya, including her family and her best friend Vicky [Nikhil Dwivedi], who secretly loves her.

Movies with such an audacious theme generally ignite debates and HATE STORY is sure to meet with severe reactions. The makers ought to be prepared for some bouquets and brickbats. What makes the movie watchable is the vengeance aspect. But the ease with which she makes her way to the people she sets her sights on is hard to digest. First, the CEO [Joy Sengupta] followed by the influential politician [Mohan Kapur]… the woman barters her body for getting closer to her prey. But the manner in which she executes her plan seems so unworkable and unrealistic.

Fiery dialogues and explicit visuals had prepared the viewer as to what to anticipate from HATE STORY, so that the moviegoer isn't in a state of astonishment at the daring on-screen happenings. The movie has an assortment of sexually explicit scenes and also extensive use of tainted language, which may appeal to those who relish steamy thrillers.

Director Vivek Agnihotri has filmed HATE STORY most stylishly. In fact, his approach to the narrative flabbergasts you and at times also renders you speechless, but a cohesive script would've worked wonders. The reason that compels Paoli to seek vengeance is completely justified, but the wars fought in the board rooms and the corporate jargon at places doesn't leave the desired impact. The twist in the tale in the final sequence, though shocking, seems unwarranted. A better thought culmination would've only been more impactful.

There's not much scope for music [Harshit Saxena] here, yet the songs fit the situations well. I'd like to make a special mention of the background score. It's electrifying. Another aspect that deserves to be highlighted are the dialogue. A number of dramatic scenes get enhanced due to some blazing lines. Attar Singh Saini's cinematography catches your eye.

Cast in a multi-dimensional character, Paoli, who won acclaim for her performances in Bengali films, makes a confident debut in Hindi films with HATE STORY. She facilitates in keeping the anxiety escalating with her authoritative act as her character stoops to frantic measures to make life hell for the man who disdained her. Gulshan, earlier seen in films like DUM MAARO DUM and SHAITAN, is a talent to watch out for. He plays the anti-hero with gusto. In fact, the film is about the conflict between Paoli and Gulshan's characters and the impact is heightened as they indulge in the game of cat and mouse. Nikhil is the sole character who's positive, while the other characters are either negative or have shades of grey. He's decent!

Mohan Kapur is efficient, Joy Sengupta leaves a mark, Saurabh Dubey is excellent, Iravati is wasted and Bhairavi Goswami appears in a cameo.

On the whole, HATE STORY banks on the age-old vendetta theme, but what takes it beyond the mediocre mark is the cat and mouse game played by the protagonist and antagonist, besides, of course, the bold and provocative scenes that add spice to the proceedings. Though engaging in parts, there's no denying that the second hour seizes your attention, making it a watchable experience.

BVG Films' Hate Story is a revenge drama. Kavvya Krishna (Paoli Dam) is a journalist who exposes a corruption scandal which implicates Siddharth Dhanrajgir (Gulshan Devaiah), an industrialist. To get back at Kavvya, Siddharth offers her a cushy job. Kavvya accepts the job and ends up sleeping with him. Siddharth then fires her. When Kavvya learns that she is pregnant with Siddharth's child, she threatens him. Siddharth gets her kidnapped and makes sure that she can never conceive again.

Kavvya, who has now been ostracised by everybody but her photographer-friend, Vicky (Nikhil Dwivedi), decides to take revenge on Siddharth. She trains to become the most famous prostitute of Delhi. She gets into bed with anybody who can help her destroy Siddharth's company and his life. Vicky, who secretly loves Kavvya, lets her stay in his house but hates her for becoming a prostitute.

Kavvya finds out secrets about Siddharth's company by sleeping with his company's CEO (Joy Sengupta). She then makes sure that Siddharth bids and wins a deal that will entail financial losses for his company, much to Siddharth's father, Kumar Dhanrajgir's (Saurabh Dubey) chagrin. Kumar asks Siddharth to clean up the mess or to lose control of the company.

What happens next? Is Kavvya able to exact her revenge on Siddharth? Or does the cunning Siddharth win the battle of wits? What about Vicky? The rest of the drama answers these questions.

Hate Story Review: Script Analysis

Vikram Bhatt's story is ordinary and predictable. However, Bhatt's screenplay works in parts because of the mind games between the two opponents, Kavvya and Siddharth. The screenplay also creates ample scope for explicit scenes (many of which have remained uncensored, in spite of a few obvious cuts). The second half is much more arresting than the first half, which has several scenes that are unintentionally funny.

Also, the pace of the drama slackens at intervals, leaving the audience bored. Several obvious questions pop up in the viewer's mind: why does Kavvya, who is shown to be a competent journalist, get into bed with her nemesis so easily just after she has exposed him? Why does she turn to the world's oldest profession when she could have easily used her investigating skills to find out secrets about Siddharth's company and thus, seek her revenge? These and several others points have been conveniently ignored, maybe, just to bring in the element of sex. However, this makes the drama less believable.

Dialogues, penned by Rohit Malhotra, should have been much more impactful.

Hate Story Review: Star Performances

Paoli Dam is good in some scenes and not so good in others. Gulshan Devaiah gives a confident performance as Siddharth. His change of personality when he is in front of his father is impressive. Nikhil Dwivedi gives a restrained performance in a short role. Mohan Kapoor is fine as the corrupt minister. Joy Sengupta does alright as the CEO. Iravati Harshe is alright as the CEO's wife. Saurabh Dubey leaves a mark as Kumar Dhanrajgir. Bhairavi Goswami has little to do. Others offer average support.

Hate Story Review: Direction & Music

Vivek Agnihotri's direction leaves a lot to be desired as his narrative works only in the second half. Besides, he is not able to make the drama convincing enough. The film also, unfortunately, lacks any highlight scenes, apart from the explicit ones, which will appeal to a section of the audience. Harshit Saxena's music and Kumaar's lyrics are alright. Background music, by Amar Mohile, is very good. Attar Singh Saini's cinematography is eye-catching. Editing, by Satyajeet Gazmer, is sharp. Action, by Abbas Ali Moghul, is functional.

Hate Story Review: The Last Word

On the whole, Hate Story is a half-baked revenge drama which works in parts. While the explicit scenes and the second half are its plus points, they are just not enough to create positive word of mouth publicity.

Hate Story gets mixed reviews- Hate Story Reviews RoundUp

Posted by Talk Bollywood on Apr 20, 2012 in Movies, News |

Another release of the week Hate Story has opened to mixed reviews. Most of the reviews point out to the lack of logic in the screenplay. Actress Paoli Dam has also received mixed reviews for her performance. Looks like this one has fallen short of Vicky Donor as far as the reviews are concerned.

Here's a quick summary of all the Hate Story reviews

Total Reviews: 12

3.5 stars: 1

3 stars: 2

2 stars: 5

1.5 stars: 3

1 star: 1

Apunkachoice 3.5 stars: "Hate Story" is not quite the tale of the simpering wronged woman we've been seeing in our films since the time Adam impregnated Eve.This is a most riveting and aesthetic saga of a woman's revenge against the man who's wronged her since R.K. Nayyar's "Inteqaam" ' except for the fact that Paoli does things Sadhana in Nayyar's film could have never imagined.

Bollywood Hungama 3 stars: On the whole, HATE STORY banks on the age-old vendetta theme, but what takes it beyond the mediocre mark is the cat and mouse game played by the protagonist and antagonist, besides, of course, the bold and provocative scenes that add spice to the proceedings. Though engaging in parts, there's no denying that the second hour seizes your attention, making it a watchable experience.

Times Of India 3 stars: The film instead blows the top right off the dirty deals, the, well, intercourse between different power spheres ruling India's capital ' business, politics, journalism, police, all meet in this slick flick. Depending on who you are, the intersections provide some pleasure ' and lots of pain. Appreciate, if you will, the thriller, not the diet-erotica ' that's rather an anti-climax.

Daily Bhaskar 2 stars: Predictable storyline and loosely weaved thrill will undoubtedly act as a hindrance for Hate Story. However, spiced up thrilling experience in patches, might be a reason to push yourself towards ticket window. Our final word- Stay away from Hate Story and look around for the donor, who might grace you with few funny moments, if not steamy scenes.

Zee News 2 stars:Vivek Agnihotri's 'Hate Story' falls miserably short of being called an erotic thriller. The film is a revenge saga and to put it simply lacks logic. A weak script and weak performance makes this film an ordinary revenge tale. Pitty, considering the way it was being marketed, it could have turned out be a bold erotic thriller and perhaps changed the thriller genre in the industry. But that would be asking for a lot!

Sify 2 stars: Ok, now this is one of those films where the film's publicity promises, er, something else. It's a desperate 'get-bums-on-the-seats' strategy. The publicity overdosed on the erotica quotient, making us expect a blatant and exploitative skin-show, Vikram Bhatt ishtyle. Strangely, the film turns out to be rather tame by those standards.

Koimoi 2 stars: Vikram Bhatt's story is ordinary and predictable.

Glamsham 2 stars: While the premise for revenge is promising, the method is a little baffling. Why would Kaavya want the services of the most expensive 'call girl' to understand the art of faking? Vivek Agnihotri gets off the track here by trying to infuse some oomph. But he has done enough of that in the seduction scene between Siddharth and Kaavya! HATE STORY is neither spectacular, nor boring. It falls somewhere in between.

Rediff 1.5 stars: Hate Story doesn't do either of these, and instead moans a lot. Literally. There is so much audible huffing, grunting, puffing, sighing, groaning and wheezing in this film that it feels like watching Rafa Nadal play Maria Sharapova with Monica Seles occasionally swinging by to show them how to achieve proper volume from the baseline. All these sounds are punctuated by ludicrous dialogue delivered so poorly (and loudly) that it fails even to achieve so-bad-its-good status. Pity, that.

DNA 1.5 stars: Two things stand out in Hate Story, the song Dil Kaanch Sa and Gulshan Devaiah. If you were expecting that Paoli Dam's Bollywood debut and overall nudity in the list, this reviewer is not sorry to disappoint you. All disappointment was exhausted while watching Hate Story. Overall, Hate Story remains a painfully long and worthless thriller. You'd love to hate Hate Story. Unless the voyeur in you insists, stay away from the theaters.

Nowrunning 1.5 stars: A revenge saga, if dealt properly, can at least make for an interesting one time watch. However, Vivek Agnihotri falters at the basic premise of it. The entire 'normal girl turning into a prostitute to seek revenge' doesn't quite gel well with the storyline as in the process she is seen sleeping around with only two men to work her way up the ladder. The length of the film is another hassle. At a full length feature film of 2 and a half hour, you irksomely start hating the time being put to finish viewing it.

Movie Talkies 1 star: Vivek Agnihotri had gone blue in the face claiming that his latest film Hate Story is an erotic thriller, but the film has a very yawn inducing erotica and no thrills to speak of, as such. Paoli Dam's Bollywood debut, which also stars Nikhil Dwivedi and Gulshan Devaiyah, proves to be a bitter disappointment. In conclusion, apart from a few sex scenes, which might excite a certain class of movie-goer, Hate Story does not have anything palatable to offer.

I saw the movie and I think it's not a bad attempt at something new.

My Review: SPOILER ALERT!

I think Paoli is amazing as a newcomer...there were some scenes where she nailed it--especially where she has to transform into a seductive siren. However, in the beginning scenes--she played her "innocent" character too OTT.

The guy who plays Sid--he was so much better in Shaitan. I thought he was going to be amazing, but the sociopath, manipulative, sexy villian was not his best. Made me think maybe Emmy should have done this role, especially in the scenes where Sid is shown to be afraid of his father.

Nikhil--why was he even needed. His character and storyline was so underdeveloped. Sorry, but he just hindered the plot line and his reaction at the end was hilarious when a certain someone falls to their foreshadowed demise.

Story: Very good concept but the script was def weak. The story was quite fast-paced, but b/c of this many things and characters were underdeveloped. Take for instance, how Kavya and Sid fall in "love"--it happens in 5 mins so it's very hard to fathom that it impacts kavya to such a degree--but after that road bump it's smooth sailing until the 2 major confrontations b/w them. The PC where all chaos breaks loose and where Kavya's character could have been given better lines. Also, the last scene where Sid is finally destroyed--I really wanted him to BEG for forgiveness, but he begs for a bullet--so poorly written.

As for the Vicky-Kavya angle: Did not need it, especially the confession scene--i really thought this was gonna be another film where the girl sleeps around and still needs a guy in the end that loves her immensely, but ending was shocking and nicely done. Moral: Every action has a consequence!

My rating: Despite a few minor flaws in the script I say 3.5 partially b/c Paoli Dam is actually very talented--the scene where she cries in the elevator was good, where she gets slapped by Sid and her action (her expressions were top-notched), and def the ability to seduce him. She def did the seductive justice. Like I said--def a good attempt by the Bhatts, maybe next time make the movie 2 1/2 hours, cut the songs and develop the characters!

Hate Story Good At Single Screens Vicky Donor Picks Up At Multiplexes Housefull 2 Rock Solid

Saturday 21st April 2012 09.00 IST

Boxofficeindia.Com Trade Network

Hate Story did well on its opening day at single screens with collections around 40-50%. The film is poor at multiplexes of metros but business outside metros be it Gujarat, UP, Nizam or CPCI was good on the first day.

Vicky Donor started poorly but picked up at metro multiplexes especially in the Delhi NCR area going from 25% to 50%. Business was not good outside Delhi NCR, Punjab, Mumbai city and Bangalore and did not pick up much. The film is likely to do well in the areas it picked up in with Delhi and Punjab leading the way due to local content.

Bittoo Boss is a poor fare with business less than 2 crore nett in its first week. The film is out of most theatres in week two. FLOP

Housefull 2 had a rock solid second week of around 30 crore nett taking its two week total to 92.50 crore nett. The film had competition from Hate Story at single screens and Vicky Donor at multiplexes in its third week but still remained largely unaffected by the two new releases. SUPER HIT
