Just after Sandeep Acharya was declared the next Indian Idol, we went inside the green rooms of the talent show, where we got reactions from the judges, show host ex-Indian Idol, other Indian Idol contestants and above all the WINNER HIMSELF.
First we caught up with the judges, Sony Nigam and Farah Khan along with the show host Aman Verma: We asked them whether they were happy with the results and who did they want as their Indian Idol.
Sonu: I am very happy. Karunya is a much better singer than any of the other singers over here. But when it comes to overall personality definitely Sandeep touches me more than Karunya. When Sandeep cries, I used to cry. So Sandeep connects amazingly with the audience and with me. He is also such a humble kid, I realized that. Throughout the contest, he has never said anything objectionable. We have criticised him a lot, but he would never say that 'I sang well, maybe they didn't like it'. I found this totally amazing, a very steadily humble guy. Initially I thought of him as pretentious, but then I realized that he is very down-to-earth. I hope he stays like that forever. I think Karunya couldn't connect with the audience the way Sandeep did. I don't think it's the North-South divide because of which Karunya lost because if you apply that logic then Amey Date wouldn't have been voted out. I had said that I met people wherever I went who loved Karunya but I think maybe I met the elite who just wanted to go with my opinion and they did not constitute the voting public. I have always maintained that Sandeep would be such a well-behaved, appropriate idol, not that Karunya is bad. ( At this point Sonu got a call from Lata Mangeshkar and he excused himself.)
Farah : I was the only one who had predicted this many months ago when Sandeep was not in the running. He was in my top three. I really think that he is the entire package. The good thing about him is that when we first saw him, we had no expectation from him. I don't think we even considered him. The way he has improved and groomed himself is amazing. I really think he has the star quality and girls will go mad about him when they see him in a video. He has a very quiet, handsome face. He has a lovely voice, a hero's voice. Though Karunya is technically a better singer but as a package, for me, Sandeep really worked. Karun is a more trained singer, a classically trained singer. He is a superior singer but then the show is more than just about singing. I have been pushing him for months now. (At this moment Aman enters and teases Farah)
Aman : Are you in love with him?
Farah : No, Aman I am not in love with him. But I really like him and I do think he has a star quality about him.
Aman : Well, Farah knows what people want.
Farah : Ya, I am not here for my singing. My intuition said that he is superb and today, I have been proved right. Though Karunya is a better singer but we have been told continuously that Indian Idol is not about who the best singer is. It's about who has the star quality and who is a better performer and who will you pay for in a concert to go and see or watch his video or swoon over his presence. I wasn't surprised at all that he won.
Aman: My favourite was Karunya. He was miles ahead as far as singing is concerned. I think he didn't win because people in his city and region didn't vote for him. Even last year my favourite was Amit Sana.
We then moved on to the noisy green room of the contestants. Apart from Sandeep who was being followed around by a cameraman constantly, there were the top 10 contestants of this year's series and also Indian Idol, Abhijeet Sawant. First we asked the ever smiling Sandeep, how he felt on winning the coveted title.
Sandeep: I am extremely happy that I won. I am so happy that it'll take me a long time to express myself properly. I have been given such a big title, I am ecstatic. I want to thank God for it, my elders who had blessed me and the Indian public that voted for me. When I went on stage I thought of my chances as 50-50 but I wanted to win and obviously, so did Karunya. Both of us sang well and I am very happy that I won. I have been given a great responsibility, an enormous honour of a mega title; I dedicate it to all of you who made me win. I would try to make you happy, always.
We also asked Abhijeet Sawant whether he thought that the best man won.
Abhijeet: I am very happy for Sandeep. But I think Karunya was a much better singer.
As we left the green rooms, Amey, Panna, Anuj, Minal, Monali and the rest were catching up with each other and Karunya was still busy on the sets. His parents waited outside while Sandeep's aunt distributed laddoos.
