Well Nitu, thanks for the post which is of course very well intended and deserved.
Both the movies have changed the way the film makers should look at the audience and not take them as mere fools.
Both films have highlighted remarkable work in all aspects of film making (though there may be a few glitches here and there - which I am just going to overlook in v iew of their sheer intensity and sincerity).
Kudos to the team of both movies and let's keep hoping that we get good, meaningful films from them. AT LEAST.

Big win for Sujoy and Vidya as 'Kahaani' heads for 45 crore mark

Joginder Tuteja, IndiaGlitz [Monday, March 19, 2012]

Okay, so it is time to make a final declaration - Vidya Balan has consolidated her place as the leading lady who can run a film 'apne dam par'. Though last few days of an all-around frenzy has made many stand up and acknowledge the might that she has displayed especially since the days of 'Paa', one still wanted to see how well does 'Kahaani' sustain after the initial euphoria. However with 24 crores already in its kitty and the film holding amazingly well in the second weekend as well, the word on the street is that Vidya is an actress to vouch for.

It is clear that she is bringing credibility to the films by merely coming on board and it won't be wrong to say that within a decade of being a part of the industry, she is now wearing the crown of female Aamir Khan. With her selective approach towards signing films and working in only those projects that give her ample scope to perform and make her presence felt, Vidya has consolidated her place as a woman of substance.

This is evident from the dream run that 'Kahaani' is enjoying which is now all set to hit at least the 45 crore mark now, hence coming close to being a superhit. It is one of those rare cases of a film seeing all around positive response from the cinegoers, especially with many making a repeat watch to relive the suspense element. For that one has to credit director Sujoy Ghosh who has rose like a phoenix and almost hit back with a vengeance. By establishing his stand as an able story teller, he is now someone to watch out for in the coming years.

On the other hand 'Chaar Din Ki Chandni' has been completely ignored amidst the craze surrounding 'Kahaani', 'Paan Singh Tomar' and to an extent 'Tere Naal Love Ho Gaya'. The film opened poorly, didn't see any escalation whatsoever over the weekend and then nosedived during the weekdays. In fact the film's collections were more or less same as 'Paan Singh Tomar' (in its second week) as both accumulated around 5 crores each.

Kahaani: What's the story behind the numbers?

by FP Staff Mar 22, 2012

#BollywoodDailies #Cinema of India #Entertainment/Culture #Kahaani #Paan Singh Tomar #Vidya Balan

No running around the trees professing love, no item number, no size-zero heroine, no hero who beats up the villain — can a Hindi movie be successful without all the typical masala? Yes it can. And Kahaani has proved it with its numbers.

The thriller directed and co-produced by Sujoy Ghosh, stars Vidya Balan, Parambrata Chatterjee and Nawazuddin Siddiqui in lead roles. Balan portrays the role of Vidya Bagchi, a pregnant woman in search of her missing husband, who is helped in her quest by Chatterjee and Siddiqui. The thriller turned out to be a stunner.

What do the numbers say?

Poster/ Wikipedia

The movie, made on a budget of Rs 8 crore, and released across 1100 screens worldwide, has crossed Rs 75 crore in Gross Box Office collections so far and is still running to packed houses.

In the first week itself the movie crossed Rs 23 crore in net profit, while other movies that were released in the same week likeChaar Din ki Chandni fizzled with Rs 5 crore net in week one. Paan Singh Tomar, another critically acclaimed movie, managed to collect Rs 10.50 crore net in two weeks.

The second week of Kahaani saw a drop in business of just 10 percent from the previous week. For an average hit Hindi movie, by the second week, numbers drop by 40-50 percent – a clear indicator that the Kahaani was a super hit.

The distributor of the movie, Viacom18 Motion Pictures (VMP) is a new age studio that backs quality content and talent. In just 18 months of being in the business, VMP has notched up sleeper super hits like Tanu Weds Manu, Pyaar Ka Punchnama, Shaitan, Bbuddah Hoga Terra Baap and earned worldwide critical acclaim with path-breaking films like That Girl in Yellow Boots and Michael. Kahaani is another achievement, that it can now boast off.

Reactions:

Kahaani carried an average critic and reviewers rating of 4 stars.

Imdb.com, the authority on movie ratings worldwide, has put Kahaani in its Top 50 thrillers of all time, making it the only Hindi film to be featured in this exalted list.

Ormax Media people poll has seen Indian audience vote Kahaani as the No 2 thriller of all times for Hindi movies.

Kahaani is all set to deliver handsome returns on VMP's investment.

Rituparna Chaterjee is perhaps the only movie critic i have seen who said tht ;kahaani didn't work for her...she said everything looked fake and is unnatural. i think she should go and watch herself in the mirror she would get the real answers...who is fake and who is unnatural.

some people talk abt opinions but talk as stupid to the least. come on' give it a break its a movie after all
