Hi Everyone.😃

Well here I am with an update, I am afraid this will in no way match today's show, but hope you like my attempt.

I have lost all abilities to write a coherent thought today, so here it goes.

Enjoy?

Part 7

"Love is as much of an object as an obsession, everybody wants it, everybody seeks it, but few ever achieve it, those who do will cherish it, be lost in it, and among all, never... never forget it."

_________Curtis Judalet

Gopi dressed in a light pink Embroidered Kurti with white tights and white flat sandals. She wrapped pink and white scarf around her neck. She left her hair loose, with her usual style. She put a small pink bindi on her forehead, pink bangles in one wrist and watch on the other. She kept her small work earrings and wore no other jewelry.

She glanced at the roses on her dresser and once again felt a calmness come over her. Initially the roses had brought tears to her eyes but now they were source of her strength. Their beauty and fragrance reminded her of her love for Ahem and this gave her strength to resist herself from throwing herself in his arms and cry her pain out to him. She loved him too much to deny him his family. She knows that if she told him everything then he would still insist on being by her side, he would not care but she couldn't bring herself to do this to him.

Ahem gave her enough love in one week to last her a lifetime, she couldn't ask for anymore than that. He deserves to live without the complications that she would bring as a baggage into his life if she gave into her need to be with him. It will be painful to let him go but she must let him go.

As she drove towards Modi house her thoughts turned to the fact that her parents will also be present at this dinner party. She needed to make things look normal as possible without bringing attention to the strains in her relationship with her parents.

Thirty minutes later she pulled up in front of Modi house. She said a small prayer before getting out of the car and walked towards the door. She rang the doorbell and waited for someone to open the door. She smiled when Hetal aunty opened the door. "Jai Shree Krishna auntyji, how are you?"

Hetal smiled at the sweet child in front of her and once again Gopi's smile and features looked familiar to her but she just can't decide why it would be so. "Jai Shree Krishna beta, I am fine. Come in, you look very pretty."

Gopi looked down shyly before replying. "Thank you auntyji!" Compliments always made Gopi uncomfortable. She followed Hetal aunty towards the main room. She was last to arrive so all heads turned towards her when she entered. She gave a general greeting to everyone. Her aunt gestured her to sit next to her. Gopi hugged her aunt before sitting beside her. The talk about the wedding resumed and Gopi sat back to listen.

Ahem, who was sitting across the room with a laptop in front of him, looked up as soon as she entered the main room. His mind went blank when he saw her. She looked beautiful in pink; this was his first time seeing her in Indian attire and he thought she looked even lovelier with the small bindi on her forehead. He wondered how anyone would find her simple beauty plain. Raj gave him a small nudge to bring him back to their conversation and task, when Ahem looked at his friend; he gave him a knowing look. Ahem shook his head and went back to the task on hand, but half of his attention was on the ladies and their conversation.

Half hour later he heard his mom compliment Gopi and telling her mom she must be proud of a daughter like Gopi and the family she marries into will be very lucky and proud to have a daughter in law like Gopi. Ahem's fingers froze on the keyboard and waited for Neeta aunty to reply. He turned to Gopi and watched as she clenched her hands and look down at them. He was sure whatever came out of Neeta auntie's mouth is going to end up hurting his Gopi. And in the next moment his suspicions were confirmed.

"Yes Kokilaben you are right, but what can we do, we have tried to set up Gopi's alliance to many good families, but they want a girl who at least looked reasonably pretty and our Gopi unfortunately lacks in looks department. And also most families are weary of making, someone who does not live with her parents, their daughter in law. Most people these days don't want a modern thinking daughter in law even if they have potential to bring in a good income in the home. They are afraid she will take their son and move out on their own." Ahem glanced at the shameless woman and wanted to strangle her with his bare hands.

He glared at his mom, why would she do that to Gopi? She already knew the whole story about Gopi's estrangement with her parents especially her mother, then why would his mom purposely make things worse. "Take it easy Ahem, your mom is just testing her." Ahem heard Raj whisper to him and took several deep breaths to calm his temper. He looked at his mom again and saw the way she was glaring at Neeta aunty and felt a little better, but he still didn't like the fact that his mom had hurt Gopi in the process of testing the woman.

He glanced around the room and was relieved to see no one else had tuned into the ladies' conversation. He watched Gopi's aunt put her hand on Gopi's clenched hands to sooth her and wished he had the right to stand up and blast the idiot woman for hurting someone as gentle and caring as Gopi. Few minutes later Sheetal aunty gave Gopi a reason to leave the room. "Gopi beta I forgot to give you your dress the other night when you came to see me, come on walk me to the car to get the dress. I want to see what you think of it. I designed it myself just for you." He saw Neeta aunty and Avni give Sheetal aunty a venomous look as Gopi and her aunt walked out of the room.

Few minutes later Ahem excused himself and walked towards the study. He closed the door of the study and walked toward the windows that faced the front of the house. He watched as Gopi waited for her aunt to get something from the car. She was standing their twisting her hands nervously. She glanced towards the house as if sensing someone's eyes on her but turned back when her aunt touched her arm. He was relieved to see she wasn't going to bolt and seem to have handled the hurting words her mom spoke without breaking down. He went back in the main room when they started walking towards the main door again.

He took his seat just before they walked in, Gopi glanced at him, but looked away quickly when she saw him watching her. "Gopi open the packet and show everyone the dress, then you can go in Kinjal's room and try it out so if any adjustments needs to be made I can mark them." He heard Sheetal aunty say to Gopi.

Gopi looked around the room nervously but opened the packet. She gasped when she saw the maroon and hunter green lehnga. It was her favorite colors, specifically maroon was her favorite color and hunter green was Ahem's favorite color. She glanced up to see him watching her intently with a smile on his lips. She looked at the lehnga and realized this is the exact design she had specified to her aunt at the time of her college graduation when her aunt visited them.

Sheetal aunty touched her cheek and smiled. "You didn't think I forgot did you? This is actually your design not mine, I just had it made for you with slight adjustments. What do you think?" Gopi felt her eyes sting at the reminder, she had so many dreams when she designed the outfit, but now it only reminded her of things that could never be. She placed the dress back in the box and hugged her aunt. "It's beautiful, thank you so much." Her aunt hugged her back and spoke softly in her ear. "Save the dress for a special occasion, I have something else for you to wear for Amit's wedding." Gopi pulled back and looked at her aunt with surprise.

Her aunt gave her a knowing look. "Have faith Gopi, you know what baa used to say, do you remember?" Gopi nodded. "Nothing is impossible, you just have to believe in yourself." Gopi blinked back the tears. She stood up abruptly, "I think I will wait to go home and try it on. I will go place this in my car." She walked out before anyone could stop her.

Ahem wanted to follow her but just then his mom announced it was time for dinner and called everyone to the dining room; he didn't have any choice but to follow everyone to the dining room. He signaled Kinjal and Ria who understood immediately and walked towards the front doors to go outside.

After dinner Kinjal and Ria took Gopi to Kinjal's room to show her Kinjal's outfits for the wedding. Rashi was not with them since she was attending a family function with her parents. Amit took his uncle and aunt home while Ahem and Raj went to Ahem's room and left Baa and the other older people to finalize the wedding plans. Ahem was glad he didn't have to look at Gopi's parents anymore. He had seethed all night at the way Neeta aunty gushed over Avni and tried to belittle Gopi.

"Ahem would you calm down, there is nothing you can do right now, instead just think about what your next step is to convince Gopi to give you a chance." Raj had seen Ahem clench and unclench his hands all night and hoped he didn't start shouting at Gopi's parents.

Ahem stopped in the middle of the room and placed his hands on his hips. He looked up at the ceiling and closed his eyes. "Raj I need to see her alone, just for few moments. I need to make sure she is okay." Raj sighed and pulled out his phone. He text Kinjal to let her know Ahem's request; he will leave it to Kinjal on how to get Gopi to see Ahem. Raj told Ahem he text Kinjal to let her know.

Ahem knew his sister will somehow take care of it. "How did she react to the flowers?" Raj had been waiting all night for Ahem to ask him this and was surprised when he didn't ask him right away. "I think she knew as soon as she saw them, but she didn't react outwardly at all. I couldn't read her expressions, except for when one of her co-worker tried to taunt her, but she handled that very well."

Ahem walked to the window and stared down at the rose garden. He smiled when Raj told him word per word at the way Gopi handled her co-worker. "That's my girl, she knows how to handle the outsiders; it is her own family she does not know how to deal with." If only she would let him near her then she wouldn't have to deal with her parents or her spoiled sister at all. He was determined to find a way to make her part of his life permanently.

Ahem turned when Raj's phone signaled an incoming text. Raj smiled as he read the text. He got up from the bed and walked to the door. "You are lucky, she also wants to talk to you for five minutes." He opened the door and looked back at Ahem. "Make the best of it." He winked and closed the door.

Ahem turned back towards the scene outside and waited. He knew his sister would have directed her to his room. He waited with hope and anticipation. Will she be pleased at the colors of the room? They had both taken each other's favorite colors into consideration even when they were not together. He had chosen their favorite colors for this room and she had chosen their favorite colors for her dress.

He heard the door open and close quietly but didn't turn; he waited to see what she would do. He sighed when he heard her move towards him. He turned when she came to stand beside him. "Hi, are you okay?" He couldn't help the concerned tone of his question. She didn't look at him but stared out at the rose garden.

"I am fine Ahem, it's nothing new. I wanted to thank you for the flowers, they were beautiful." She twisted her hands in front of her. Ahem moved closer to her and cupped her face to make her look at him. "Nothing is beautiful as you." She turned away and moved away from him. "Gopi please don't do this to yourself or us. It doesn't matter what she says, don't let her words get to you."

She kept her face turned away from him. "There is no us Ahem, there can never be us. Why can't you understand this? Ahem I am not what you need in your life. Please don't do this to me or yourself because I won't give in to you." She moved towards the door. He moved quickly and placed his hand on the door to keep her from opening it. "You can't leave without hearing what I have to say." She refused to look at him. "Did you forget everything I said to you? I won't give up." He moved away from the door. "Gopi," he stopped her before she walked out, "listen to the CD again, maybe then you will believe me again."

Gopi hesitated then turned to him. He took a step towards her when he saw the pain and unshed tears in her eyes but stopped when she held up her hands. "This isn't about my looks anymore, this is about your happiness. Bridge the distance between you and your mom Ahem and move forward with your life; stop looking back. As for the forgiveness you asked for there is nothing to forgive, I understand and respect your decision." Her words hit him like a ton of bricks and it took him a moment to realize she left. He took quick steps to follow her only to see her make her way down the steps.

Ahem was about to call out to Gopi to stop her but his mom stopped Gopi first. "Gopi dikra, where are you going in such a hurry?" Gopi tried to smile at Koki aunty. "Auntiji I was just coming to say goodnight to everyone. I should leave now, it is late and tomorrow is a work day." Koki placed her hand on Gopi's cheek. "Okay, but first I wanted to say I am sorry for what happened this evening. I should have never said anything, it only ended up hurting you." Koki took Gopi's hand in both of hers. "I thought maybe it might help if I complimented you but it had the opposite effect on your mother."

Gopi placed her other hand on top of Koki's. "Please Auntiji don't apologize, I know you were just trying to help me." Koki felt her heart tug at the sincerity of Gopi's words. She wasn't just saying not to apologize to make her feel better, but Gopi meant the words too. Why anyone would not want a daughter like Gopi was beyond Koki's understanding. Koki placed a hand on Gopi's head to bless her. "Bless you beta." Gopi smiled at Koki. "I will just go say goodnight to everyone." Gopi went in the main room. Koki was about to follow her when she caught something from the corner of her eye, she turned and was surprised to see Ahem at the top of the stairs staring at the entrance to the main room. Koki gave him a thoughtful look and also went into the main room.

Next day Ahem climb the stairs to go to his room wearily, loosening the tie around his neck, just as he was passing Kinjal's room he heard Ria begging Kinjal to find out where Raj was taking Amit for the bachelor party later that night. Ahem had forgotten all about the outing, he had been too busy coming up with ways to spend time with Gopi without making her feel as though she has to be on guard all the time. He had finally come up with one option. He will ask for her friendship, if not a relationship with him, then the least she could do is be his friend. He will take it one day at a time until she trusts him again to take the next step.

He leaned his shoulder against the open door, folded his arm across his chest and observed his sister and cousin for few minutes. His sister was trying to reason with Ria. "Ria you know how your jiju is, I tried my best to get him to tell me, but he refused because he knows you won't let Amit go if you find out, and he is sure I will tell you."

Ria placed her hands on her hips and pouted. "He better remember his turn is coming and I may take you to a male strip joint, then see how he feel about that." Ahem couldn't hold in his laugh when he saw his sister blush and eyes widen in surprise. While Ria was outspoken and outgoing his sister was quiet and shy. They have always shared a close relationship and Ahem felt an overwhelming affection for both of them.

Ria and Kinjal turned towards the door when they heard Ahem laugh and looked at each other. They both smiled and blinked back tears; it was nice to hear him laugh again, even if it was at their expense. He walked into the room and put his arm around Ria affectionately and kissed her on the head. "So you want to know where Raj is taking Amit tonight for the bachelor party." Ria nodded enthusiastically at her cousin. "Yes bhai I do and Kinjalben can't get him to tell her." She gave him a pleading look. "Bhai have mercy on me and tell me please."

Ahem pretended to look thoughtful. "Hmm..if I tell you, you have to do something for me in return." Kinjal and Ria exchanged looks, they knew exactly what their brother wanted from them. "Anything you want bhai, but remember we are going to be crashing the party."

Ahem grinned at them, "I am expecting nothing less from you Ria. As long as you get me what I want, I won't say anything to anyone." He began to tell them what he wanted and the place where Raj is taking the men for the party.

Gopi paced back and forth impatiently. Rashi was taking forever to get ready, Ria and Kinjal will be arriving soon to pick them up for their outing. Gopi had declined at first but Ria insisted Gopi had to be present to celebrate her last day of freedom. Wedding rituals will start the next day and Ria won't be able to leave the house for anything. Gopi couldn't refuse her sincere request and had agreed to attend the dinner. It was all girls, besides Kinjal, Rashi and herself, there were Ria's cousins from her dad side and her friends, about eight altogether.

Gopi stopped pacing when she heard Rashi come in the room. She frowned when she saw that Rashi didn't look happy about something. "Rashi what is wrong, did something happen?" Rashi checked her phone. "No Gopi, I have been trying to call Jigar for past hour and he is not answering his phone. I wonder where he went off to now."

Gopi kept quiet on the subject. She didn't know much about Jigar and she is sure he didn't like her so it's best to not say anything to Rashi. At the same time she didn't want her friend to worry. "I didn't know he had comeback from his out of town trip." Rashi sat down on the sofa. "He came back this morning, but we didn't talk for long. All he told me was Raj had plans for tonight."

"Well then I am sure he will call you when he sees your message, I am sure he is probably just busy with something." Gopi reassured her. Just then they heard the loud honk of a car horn, they both grabbed their purses and walked out the door.

Kinjal pulled up in front of a trendy Indian club. Gopi had never been to the place, this was her first time, but she had heard about it. It was mixture of Hindi and English music dance club. They also provided setting for private parties. The hostess escorted them to the second floor; their table had the best view of the dance floor below. The place was crowded and the music was loud.

As soon as they sat down the waiter came to take their drink orders; once the orders were given the conversation turned to the wedding and receptions. Ria's friends wanted to know about her plans for the honeymoon and then everyone started giving tips to Ria. Gopi was only paying half attention to the conversation at the table, she was too astonished by the behavior of some of the girls at the club.

Her eyes widened when she saw Raj, Jigar and her brother at one of the tables on the first floor, near the dance floor. "Good evening ladies and gentlemen." The DJ loud voice came over the loud speakers and the crowed below went wild. "Before we get started tonight, I have a special surprise for one special guy who is to get married in three days time. So everyone give an around of applause for Mr. Amit Parekh." Gopi looked at Ria to see her staring down at her brother with a calculating look. Uh oh, she had a feeling this was not going to end well.

She turned her attention back to the dance floor to see someone rolling a huge cake towards her brother's table. "Raj I am going to kill you for this." She heard Kinjal murmur and wondered what this was about. Ria agreed with Kinjal. "Yeah Kinjalben your fianc is going to pay for this big time." Gopi couldn't help but laugh at them, she was relieved to hear Ria's target was Dr. Joshi and not her brother.

DJ started playing middle east dance music and just as the cake reached her brother the top of the fake cake flew off and a girl in a belly dancer outfit emerged from it. Several other dancers in the same type of outfits joined her; she could see the discomfort on her brother's face even from where she was sitting and wondered how he was going to recue himself out of this one. Ria stood up abruptly and made her way to the steps. Kinjal and Rashi decided to follow her when they saw Raj and Jigar dance with the other girls.

Gopi frowned she wondered why Ahem was not there but then realized he wasn't into these type of settings. He preferred a quiet dinner or quiet night spent at home. She laughed at the stunned expressions on Jigar and Raj's face when they saw Kinjal and Rashi standing in front of them, Raj tried to look innocent but couldn't pull it off, and ran from there as Ria and Kinjal both chased him. Gopi couldn't stop laughing, her brother and Jigar were in daze, frozen in the same spot.

"Having fun?" She heard someone drawl near her ear. She shivered at the sensual tone of the voice. She knew and recognized the voice and spicy scent of his aftershave right away. She turned her head to see him standing next to her chair with a wide grin on his face. She couldn't speak because her mouth had dried up seeing the smile on his face. She picked up her drink to take a sip to wet her dry mouth and to buy time. She didn't know how to respond to him. He pulled up a chair next to her and sat down. "How are you doing?" He asked her.

Gopi shrugged her shoulder and played with the straw in her drink and answered without looking at him. "I am fine, how are you?" When several moments passed and he didn't answer her she turned her head to look at him.

He looked around the place then stood up. He took her hand in his and made her get up to walk with him. "Come on we are getting out of here." Gopi was too stunned at first to say anything then she stopped walking making him stop also. "Ahem stop, I can't just leave. I came here with Kinjal and she will be worried to see me gone." Ahem turned to her. "Kinjal knows you will be with me and will tell others also, don't worry. And I will drop you home later, I promise." He didn't give her a chance to reply and started walking towards the exit. She had no choice but to follow him since he refused to let go of her hand.

Ahem didn't dare stop until he was standing next to his SUV. He opened the passenger side door for Gopi and waited to see what she would do. When she didn't move to get in the car he sighed. "Okay I get you don't want to have anything to do with me, but I just want to talk to you. If at the end of what I have to say, you still don't want to have anything to do with me then I will keep my distance and abide by your wishes, but please hear me out first."

Gopi could see he meant the words as a promise so finally gave in and sat in the car. He closed the door and walked around to the driver's side. Gopi smiled involuntarily, silver SUV just like the one he had rented when he was in Florida. Ahem glanced at her but didn't say anything. He drove with ease and confidence, but did not speed or try to overtake anyone. He took the Parkway and drove out of the city. Gopi realized he was driving towards the small hill outside of the city, people referred to it as the look out point because from that point the whole city was visible.

Thirty minutes later he parked in one of the parking space and turned off the car and just looked out the windshield at the beautiful view of the city. He glanced at her. "Do you want to go stand by the railing for a better view?" She nodded and moved to open the door. He met her at the front of the car and they walked towards the railing. They were only about 700 feet above, but the view was breath taking. She turned to him after several moments. "Do you come here often?"

He turned to the side and looked at her. "Not much in the past but in the past three years I have made several trips here for peace and quiet. Whenever I felt lonely and missed you I came here to remember our time together." Gopi didn't know how to reply to his last statement so she kept quiet. "I started coming here after the night I made my decision to give into my family's demand. When I was here that night I felt as though you were with me, supporting me in my decision and so it became a habit to come here often whenever I needed to feel you with me."

Ahem turned away from her again. Even though she understands and respects his decision, it still didn't lessen his guilt or her pain at once again being rejected by someone she loved and trusted. He felt his eyes sting at the thought of her pain. He clenched his jaw to control his emotions, he needed to take one step at a time and if she agreed to be his friend then he will make sure there are several opportunities to find out what happened to her.

He looked down at the city lights. "Although I want to start with you again it is obvious to me my wishes are causing you more pain and I don't want to do this to you anymore so I won't push you to give me a second chance." Gopi didn't know why she felt pained by his words, he finally listened to her words and is willing to move forward. "It is the best solution for both of us, and my decision has nothing to do with you or the fact that you didn't come to meet me. Please just trust me to know what I am doing, in the end this is the best solution for us. I want you to move forward with your life Ahem, I want you to be happy."

Ahem clenched his hand around the railing and took deep breaths. "Okay if that is what you want I will move forward, but I have one request for you." He turned back to her and waited for her to give consent. "I will do my best to grant your request Ahem."

He smiled in relief. "Now that I have found you again I can't let you go completely. You don't want to share my life, but I hope you will give me permission to be your friend at least. Please don't ask me to let you go completely, if I can't have your love then I will take the next best thing." Ahem glanced at her to see what she thought of his request.

She shook her head and he felt the pain of her rejection but waited to hear what she had to say. "Ahem this would be so much easier if we didn't pursue any kind of relationship. It will be so much harder for you to move forward if my presence in your life continues." Ahem couldn't give up. "You are wrong about that Gopi, if seeing me makes you happy then I will do anything to make you happy, even move forward with my life. You also have to consider the fact that your brother is marrying my cousin that means we won't be able to avoid each other completely. Not only your brother but your best friend is going to marry my brother in near future. Will you cut off all your relationships to avoid me? Wouldn't be better and less stressful for everyone if you and I were friends? They shouldn't have to pay for our pain."

Gopi felt as though her life was spinning out of control. Will she be ever at peace again? No matter how much she tried to deny it she knew he was speaking the truth. Even if she quit her job and relocated somewhere far away from here, she will end up hurting her loved ones, and what's worse is they will also carry the burden of guilt. It is better if she agreed to his terms and avoid hurting everyone. He was right her loved ones shouldn't have to pay for her pain. It will cause her more pain when he finds someone to spend his life with, but for now his friendship will be enough to get her thru the days. Truthfully she also wanted him in her life in one form or another, and friendship is better than nothing.

She looked up at the sky. "Why does god make things so complicated? Why must he test us at every turn." She thought to herself. She finally turned to Ahem. "Yeah you are right, our families shouldn't have to pay for my complicated life. Okay Ahem I am willing to be your friend and hope that this will enable you to start your life fresh also."

Ahem grinned down at her, he felt a peace and calm come over him and breathed a silent breath of relief at her agreement. One hurdle passed now he needs to gain her trust and find out what is making her withdraw from the world. What secrets are so painful that she would rather spend her life alone rather than share her pain with him.

He held out his hand. "It will Gopi, trust me, this will definitely help me move forward. Friends?" She looked at him steadily for few moments as if gauging his sincerity then slowly placed her hand in his. "Friends." He couldn't help himself and pulled her to him to hug her lightly. "Thanks you for this, you won't regret it, I promise." He let her go quickly and moved back.

I am first ... 🥳
And Shilpa I loved it so much... It was another superb update...👏 I loved the path Aham is taking..

Wow Shilpa.. This is the best. Aham wants to be her friend and Gopi accepted. She had to, I know, but she still accepted. She does not know... It is his way forward.. The actual way forward to remove her pain and make her his forever😳

Oh what a sweetheart Aham is. I love him in your FF. He is so kind and considerate and is also so guilt ridden even now😕.. I think he will be ok only when he makes it better for her.. He should. He is her destiny😃

Poor Gopi. I am happy that there are so many people who care. Aham, her brother, Rashi, and most of all Koki now... And I am sure a lot more will be added to the list.. She just has to let go and see the love these people can give.. Her mother and father may have wronged her badly.. But I am sure with Aham's love and the love of the others who really care, Gopi can become whole again.. Only if she would give him a chance😊

Did I tell you I do not like her mother at all.. Now please add avni to the list. What a sister

I loved Aham's anger for her, and his pain for her.. But it was fun too with the girls crashing the bachelor party.. I can imagine Jigar looking like a deer caught in the head light😆

Shilpa.. I am grinning ear to ear after this update.. Not just smiling because I am happy.. So very happy. This was really as you promised. Not too emotional but very light and beautiful... Thank you🤗
