TV review: Eijaz Khan's 'Shubh Vivaah' lacks freshness

By Prathamesh Jadhav

It's not your regular saas-bahu drama, but Shubh Vivaah is largely driven by the same old contrived elements. Now television soaps need to move beyond that formula

Almost a year ago, when Sony Entertainment Television pulled up its socks to race ahead in the TRP game, the channel launched a refreshingly different looking Bade Acche Lagte Hain. It was a story that TV queen Ekta Kapoor had always wanted to tell. BALH looked realistic and captured the imagination of the masses. Its success was followed up by Kuch Toh Log Kahenge and Parvarish, two new shows that looked equally appealing and promised to offer something different. If the former is a story of a young, bubbly girl falling in love with an older, reticent man, the latter deals with the predicaments today's parents face in raising their children. These shows promised to bring a breath of fresh air (although ten episodes down they all walk the same old slippery slope of unrealistic, over-the-top hysteria). Unfortunately, Sony's new show Shubh Vivaah, starring Rakesh Bedi, Eijaz Khan and newbie Neha Janpandit, lacks just that: freshness. Despite good actors, a fine screenplay and fairly decent direction Shubh Vivaah fails to impress.

What the show is all about: Mr Saxena (Rakesh Bedi) lives in Vrindavan with his five daughters and like every father, wants to see them get married and settle down. The story revolves around the love they share, the bonds they cement and the dedication with which they try to change the harsh realities of their lives.

Why should you watch it: If you are going to follow the show for hottie Eijaz Khan, you need to think twice, for he is not playing the regular, suave corporate honcho who romances hot chicks. His character is scruffy, raw and with shades of grey. Though the 36-year-old works his charm, he is certainly not adorable in this one. Neha Janpandit is impressive with her restrained performance…for a relatively new face. And because the other characters are not aesthetically appealing, Neha's character of Saroj stands out. Rakesh Bedi portrays a responsible father with ease and conviction.

Avoid it for: Except for Eijaz's character, all the others are either black or white. This unrealistic slotting is pretty annoying.

Our verdict: If you are sucker for a family drama and the experimental genre is not your cup of tea, give Shubh Vivaah a try.

The characters are black and white? Lacks freshness?
This is the most refreshing show on TV for me right now. The characters are far from black and white. In fact, they're twisted. I mean, it's only been ten episodes and the characters have already been analyzed and labeled? 😆 That's ridiculous. At least give the show time to show character growth and relationships and unfold the full track before judging it typical formula with stereotypical one-dimensional characters 😆
In the entire group of five daughters, the four sisters, all except the "aestically appealing" Saroj stood out for me. Sarla is an awesomely twisted character along with Amrit. Vinod, the good and honest son in a family which thrives on manipulation and dishonesty and selfishness is incredible... Amrit and Saroj are far from the gems in this show. The other characters, in fact, ALL of the characters stand out each on their own.

gosh i wonder who wrote it all
i am quite sure the writer is fond of the love stories and goody goody boys
and i don't agree with the article
freshness lies in shubh vivah completely
its freshness is proved by the different shades of characters and also the male lead being such a guy
and gosh we have to think twice
i am sorry i totally disagree
u don't even need to think as u can watch it for sure as it is very amazing
and eijaz looked the same adorable here
and neha is great and all other cast too is ossam
i have no complaints with them
and of characters being black and white then i am feeling to laugh
what coloured mean then?
and yes the show is a family drama but with a sweet love touch with it

I Love Eijaz's character and it PROVES that he can do more than one style of actin, lover boy roles are borin, these serials give false hope to women, men in reality are like Amrit, so what is the problem in showin it

It seems clear from this articles that the person who wrote it has their mind made up already that this serial is not going to click at all. It might not be their cup of tea but to label this serial as saying "Except for Eijaz's character, all the others are either black or white. This unrealistic slotting is pretty annoying" is a bit harsh. Looks like this person has an axe to grind against someone.

Its a family drama but it's depicting real life scenarios which to me is something I can relate to better than with any other "experimental genre". I am a sucker for family drama but this one isn't cliched as others, SV is fairly new so people should refrain from writing a show off and just give it some time.
