Weaving silver dreams
MOVING ON
Gurmeet Choudhary became a household name through his role as Lord Rama in television serial Ramayan, but now the actor is all set to quit daily soaps. Metrolife speaks to the actor to find out about his future plans.
Currently playing the role of Yash in Punarvivaah, Gurmeet says this television show will be his last daily soap. However, he will be open to reality shows and anchoring.
"Punarvivaah will be my last daily soap on television. That does not mean I will quit TV. I would be open to reality shows and anchoring," says Gurmeet, who played Maan Singh Khurana in the popular show Geet-Hui Sabse Parayi.
And now Gurmeet has joined the bandwagon and is all set to make his way towards the silver screen. But why this trend? And he replies, "Well, I am doing the same thing. I am doing a few films and shifting my focus from television, so I will not judge anyone."
Married to Debina Bonnerjee, who played the role of Sita with him in Ramayan, he prepares himself for any role just by observing people around him. "As an actor, one's preparation comes through sheer observation of human behaviour. You need to ask yourself, 'How would I react if this were to happen to me?'," shares Gurmeet.
Originally from Patna, Gurmeet started his television career by playing a negative character in 3D television series Mayavi for Jaya TV and moved on to play Rama, but playing father in Punarvivaah is the biggest challenge for him so far. "The role of Yash is challenging as it calls for a certain maturity and sensitivity in me. But the biggest challenge lies in playing a father when I am not one. I need to work hard to ensure that the manner in which I handle my on-screen daughters is very natural," he says.
And this model-turned-actor works very hard on his looks as well and credits his wife Debina for that. "Obviously when I am playing the role of a family man, my looks have to be suave and sophisticated but definitely not flamboyant like a swashbuckling casanova. So I have worked on my looks accordingly and yes, I must say Debina has contributed a great deal to it. No clue what I would have done without her," he laughs.
With both of them working under a tight schedule, Gurmeet and Debina are left with little time for each other. How does he manage that? "Initially, I used to visit her sets but now when I'm home, she is working and vice versa, so I don't get the time to visit her, though she often visits me during my shoots," says the 27-year-old actor.
Gurmeet is a big fan of his wife Debina's latest show Chidiya Ghar as he gets to see her dancing in it. "I like her show. In fact, Chidiya Ghar is my favourite show because when I see Debina dancing, acting and doing all those gestures, it feels great. I am happy for her and with her," he says.
