What is a music to you???

We all are talking about whose singing we like

Let us compare.

If we hear music of early 70 & before that.....they were more soothing even if they were Pops. In romantic and sad songs you could hear singer . Hear songs of Getta Dutt or Lata & Asha of this Era. Movie..like Sujata, Terre ghar ke samne, Bandini,Naya Daur, Mother India, Mughaleazam, Yuhudi, Bharosa, Seema, Etc

THen comes 80 & 90s

Aarahdana,Khusboo, Dulhan,Hum kssi se kum nahi, Disco 82, Amar Akabar Anthony, many of Big B's

and then today's musicNow which music do you prefer to hear...if possible say why😛

Did you like the contestants when they sang a item song of today or if they took a good classical song to show their real ability

Udit, Kumar Sahnu, Sonu, Kavita Krishnamurti,Alka, Sunithi they all are good. but the music is the question here. The music of Hindustan was on the top at the time of Great Akbar with Tansen.
Went down the drain after Bahadur sahib shah (Wonderful and great shayr but failure as a king)
Ofcourse we have wonderful songs that were written & sung during the war of Aazadi....Vande Matrum, Sarfroshi ki tamanna being the most popular. But the music suffered too. Then came the cinema with movie AlamAra..characters could speak & sing on the screen. Then music from then and today ..is it improving or same or ???????????????

It depends on how they sang the song. Say a contestant sings a difficult classical song but their performance wasn't upto par. I wouldn't like it nor would it show the real ability of the contestant. Same goes for if they sing a recent song or item number and give a mediocre, below average performance. How they sing matters first and then what they sing.

Amey sang both recent and old songs during Idol. He was amey-zing in Lagaa chunri mein daag and Tum jo mil gaye ho as well as in Suno Na, Tu hi re and Tadap tadap. I liked each performance but I guess I liked Lagaa Chunri the most cause it proved his prowess over the other contestants. We perceive classical and semi-classical songs as more difficult to sing (which they are) and hence fans of a contestant may prefer that performance over other ones, even if they aren't familiar with the song. Same goes for older songs. When Karunya picked Jhanak jhanak tori baje payaliya, many people appreciated his choice of song. Mannada stated that Karunya must have a good understanding of ragas and music since he picked such a song.

I agree with Sonya. It depends how well the singer sings and performs whether a new song or an old song.
But, i also think that it would be nice if they sing old songs more often. If they sing new songs, people start comparing them to the original singer. People can also compare to old singers. But, young people might have not heard some of the old songs.Then, they might not compare, or atleast would say that new talents have their own style of singing the old ones. Most importantly, the young people would listen some great old songs.
I don't know whatever I wrote makes sense or not. 😆
BTW, Swar_Raj, it seems that you know a lot about Indian music history.

my all time favorite music director is S.D. Burman.
and then come of course his son R.D. Burman, and Shankar - Jaikishan, and Khayyam, and Laxmikant-Pyarelal, and O.P. Nayyar.

favorite music directors of today are Jatin-Lalit, A.R. Rahman, Himesh, Ismail Darbar, and Shankar-Ehsan-Loy.

All time favorite lyricists are Anand Bakshi and Gulzar.

favorite lyricists of today are Sameer and Javed Akhtar.

All time favorite singers are Kishore Kumar, Rafi saab, Lataji, Ashaji, and Mukesh.

favorite singers of today are Alka Yagnik, Uditji, Kumar Sanu, Sonu Nigam, Sunidhi Chauhan, Shaan, and Shreya Goshal

Hello all..thanks for contributing. Yes it does depend on how you present you singing. Sometimes is is better to take a easier song then a difficult song. As majority of us really just want to enjoy music. Ronnie, it is good that you like these wonderful MD s & Lyricsts.

My all time fav is OP Nayyar too. A man who never learnt music and still cannot read music..gave what wonderful songs 👏 👏
Also kuddos Kishore and Anuradha Podwal who hardly had any music training but gave amazing performance.
