Madhya Pradesh honours Benegal, Kavita Krishnamurthy

Kishore Kumar award for director; singer gets Mangeshkar award

Shyam Benegal BHOPAL: The Madhya Pradesh Government has announced the prestigious National Kishore Kumar Award and Lata Mangeshkar Award for 2005-06. The Kishore Kumar Award goes to eminent film director Shyam Benegal and the Lata Mangeshkar Award to noted playback singer Kavita Krishnamurthy. Each award carries Rs. 1 lakh in cash and a citation. The Kishore Kumar Award will be presented at Khandwa and the Lata Mangeshkar Award at Indore. The Kishore Kumar Award is given alternately for direction, acting, scriptwriting and lyrics while the Lata Mangeshkar Award is given alternately for singing and music direction.

Kavita Krishnamurthy Shyam Benegal has been active in the sphere of film direction for more than four decades. He is one of the pioneers of the era of medium budget creative films. He gave classic films like Ankur, Manthan, Nishant, Bhoomika, Trikal, Mandi, Sardari Begum, Jubaida, and Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose. He also produced the television serials Bharat Ek Khoj and Yatra for Doordarshan. Kavita Krishnamurthy has been singing for Hindi and South Indian films for over three decades. She inherited music from her family and underwent rigorous training in Carnatic music. After her formal training in music, she began by singing jingles for television and later become popular as a playback singer.

Thanks Qwest da. I remember seeing Shyam Benegal Ankur long time back. His movies forces you to think, so most of the time not many people like it, but I loved them. We don't see many movies dealing with those kind of social problems any more. May be reason are us, as those kind of films hardly make money and if producer does not make enough money how they will produce movies.

I saw Ankur as a school kid and hated it 😆 but now when i saw it..could understand it and liked it. Among his work..Bharat ek Khoj....Just superb. Hope we can get dvd for it. Will be so good for our kids to see it too.

Thanks Qwestji. I have seen all Benegal's movies except Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose. Both of them deserve this prestigious awards. Thanks to Madhya Pradesh Government.
