KSBKBT FF: The broken ties Part1 : Gunjan threatens Bhoomi Pg1
Part 4
One should rather die than be betrayed. There is no deceit in death. It delivers precisely what it has promised. Betrayal, though ... betrayal is the willful slaughter of hope.
"You may not believe in destiny, but I believe some things are meant to be and no matter how much we deny it or try to stop it things or people who are destined to be together will end up together. Things that are destined to take place will happen no matter how much we fight it. Think about it."
Damn his hide and his parting words, they have yet to leave her mind. For one whole week she tried her best to forget the words and do anything and everything in her power to avoid meeting any of the Modi's or anyone remotely close to them.
She evaded Dr. Joshi at every turn, and made sure another nurse was assigned to patients he is following for his mentor. He hadn't said anything to her but his knowing looks had told it's own stories. He knew she was avoiding everyone, including him.
Then the phone calls had started, her hard won peace was shattered in span of two weeks. She had waited for the other shoe to drop and just when she thought this time she wouldn't have to deal with her, Gopi is brought out of her complacent attitude by one lousy phone call. Thank god Rashi hadn't been home when that woman called. Mrs. Neeta Parekh, Gopi no longer thought of her as mother. She was a hateful witch who could never be happy until she made sure Gopi was miserable.
You have made this bed of roses and now lie in it and deal with the thorns that came along with the roses. Gopi admonished herself. Hindsight is twenty-twenty and now it is too late to undo what was done. Why had she given into her brother's pleadings to get to know Ria? She chose the path and now she has to walk it to see where it takes her and see what she has to give up to make sure that the people she loved are protected at any cost. If she was made to leave everything behind then so be it.
She must make sure neither Rashi nor her brother comes to know about the harassing phone calls. Her brother was out of town but will be returning soon and Rashi has been busy with work and Jigar so it has been easy to hide the phone calls from them.
So far it had been easy to avoid everyone, but Fourth of July is coming up and she has heard from both Kinjal and Ria about the plans to spend the weekend at Raj's beach home in Wildwood. Neither of them wanted to hear any excuses from her and was ordered to join them all for the party and the fireworks.
"Earth to Gopi, come back." Gopi was startled to hear her c0-worker and friend, Lisa, call out to her. She looked up to see Lisa looking at her worriedly. Gopi smiled to ease her worry. "Hi, when did you get here?" Lisa was not convinced by the smile and placed her hand on Gopi's shoulder in understanding. "Two minutes ago, ready for lunch?" Gopi nodded. "Let me just report off and I will join you."
Five minutes later both girls made their way to the cafeteria on the first floor. Lisa waited until they sat down with their food before inquiring about Gopi's worry. Her friend was going thru some tough times and she couldn't help but feel her pain. "How are you holding up? You look very tensed and worried about something. You want to talk about it?" Lisa's compassionate voice broke Gopi's resolve to keep everything to herself. If she didn't talk to someone she is going to go insane. Lisa was the only other person outside of her family and Rashi who knew all of Gopi's past history. Gopi told Lisa everything that has been happening and felt much better after sharing her grief over the current events. "Now I am being pressured to attend this party and I don't know what to do." Gopi barley ate her food, pushed it aside and waited to hear what Lisa thought.
Lisa eyed her young friend and felt like hitting someone for putting her thru so much. "Gopi what does your heart tell you to do? Forget everything else, your parents, brother, Rashi, your accident three years ago, all the past events. How do you feel now is what matters."
Gopi looked at her friend and mentor in surprise. Leave to Lisa to get straight to the point. "Lisa I am scared, there is too much at stake here, I can not give into my feelings." Her friend was watching her thoughtfully. "Is it because you have scars from the accident and the complications that came along with it or is it because of your parents?"
"Both, I suppose. I just want to be left alone. They know about me and I will be attending the wedding, this should be enough." Gopi felt her head beginning to ache.
"I have a feeling it is not going to be easy as you think Gopi." Gopi looked at her friend in confusion, she was looking over Gopi's shoulders, Gopi turned to look and groaned. Dr. Joshi was making his way towards their table.
He stopped right next to their table, pulled out a chair to sit and smiled. "Hi Lisa, how are you?" Lisa raised an eyebrow at his happy mood. "I am well Dr. Joshi, but you are awfully happy." He rubbed his hands together. "I am looking forward to end of the week and I am happy that I finally tracked down this young lady." Pointing to Gopi.
Gopi looked at him wryly and made a face. "The answer is no for whatever you are asking." Raj smiled at her devilishly. "I am on a mission today, and I am not supposed to go back without getting a yes answer from you. I will do anything, blackmail, beg, or refuse to leave until you say yes to my invitation. I have no other options, and neither do you, unless you want to be kidnapped out of your bed."
Lisa snickered and Gopi glared at her. "Well you are out of luck, because I am going to be working on the fourth." Gopi sat back and folded her arms across her chest in triumph.
Raj put his hands over his heart dramatically. "You wound me; Why are you lying? I happen to know you are off on the fourth and you have a long weekend." Gopi sat up and glared at him. "Who told you?" Raj just shook his head. "I am not telling. Besides I heard that you are a great cook and I am depending on you to keep Kinjal and Ria from experimenting." Before Gopi could say anything Lisa's beeper went off. She turned it off and stood up to leave.
Lisa stopped beside Gopi and put her hand on Gopi's shoulder and bent to speak to her. "You should go, you haven't been anywhere in a long time. Go and relax and leave your worries behind." Gopi shook her head in denial.
"Hey Lisa why don't you and Brian join us." Lisa smiled in thanks. "No can do Raj, Brian is taking me away for a romantic weekend without the kid. His mom offered to keep Ryan for the weekend." Gopi smiled at her friend. "Be careful and I will see you when you come back."
Lisa sighed. "I swear sometimes I forget who is older, you or me. Okay mother hen I will be careful." Gopi laughed at her friend's exaggeration. "Hey I take my godmother duty very seriously." Lisa just smiled and hugged Gopi before leaving. She was very happy for her friend who was pregnant, finally, after trying for a whole year. Her son is now four years old and she didn't want to wait too long to have another child, and neither did her husband who is lawyer and just got a partnership in a very prestigious law firm.
Gopi turned back to Raj. "Well my lunch hour is over and I need to go back on the floor also." Gopi stood up. "Not so fast I am walking back with you." Raj got in step beside her. "Did anyone ever tell you, you are a very stubborn girl?" Gopi gave him a sideway look and grimaced. "I am not stubborn, I just know what I want and don't want, and right now I have no desire to spend the weekend at a beach."
Raj followed Gopi in the elevator. "Gopi trust me on this one and give in, because if you don't I know certain someone who is going to skin me for not getting you to agree. I was ordered to use all my charms on you." Gopi looked at him in shock and started laughing. "You mean to tell me Kinjal actually told you to use your charms on me, she is too trusting."
"Shows what you know, and it wasn't Kinjal who ordered me." Gopi's smile faded at that and she turned away from Raj and looked at the numbers flashing on the top. Now she was impatient to get off the elevator.
Raj leaned against elevator wall and contemplated Gopi. "Seriously Gopi, why don't you want to attend my party? What do you fear?"
Gopi kept her back to Raj so he wouldn't be able to see the longing in her eyes? "Dr. Joshi some things should be left alone. We shouldn't try to change or undo what's been done." The elevator stopped on her floor, she got off and turned back to Raj to smile at him faintly.
Gopi did not realize how much she gave away of her feelings with that excuse of a smile. It did not reach her eyes or hide the sadness in them. Raj watched her until the doors closed. He pulled out his phone and made some calls.
Ahem hung up the phone and stood up. Nothing was turning out as he planned. Everything has fallen in to place but he hadn't taken her refusal into account. He rubbed the back of his neck and tried to think on what to do next.
The week in Denver was spent working all day and he fell into bed with exhaustion to sleep thru the nights without the dreams, but once he was back home and setting up his new office at their main head quarters, the dreams came back with vengeance to torture him night after night.
Jigar was about to knock on his bhai's open office door, but when he saw his bhai's tensed form staring out the window he stopped. He just observed his brother for few minutes and though his bhai needed something to distract him from whatever was bothering him. An idea took a form in his mind and he decided this is what he needed to do for the weekend party. There was no work for three days and they are all going to the beach house it was a perfect time for his bhai to get to know Seema. It was time his bhai put the past behind and think about his future.
He knocked on the door and walked in just as Ahem turned towards him. "Hey Jigar, I thought you left to pick up Rashi for your date tonight." He frowned when his brother's mouth firmed in disappointment. "She cancelled the date, said something came up. I am sure it has something to do with her friend. I really don't understand why Rashi always drops everything to aid her friend, it's not as if she can't take care of herself." Now Ahem was really surprised at his younger brother.
"Jigar I have never seen you like this, what is wrong? You were rude to our guest last week also." Before Jigar could answer his bhai his cell phone rang. Ahem listened to Jigar's side of the conversation and realized someone from home was calling to inquire about what time they would be home. Jigar hung up the phone and told Ahem they needed to leave now as their parents wants to discuss something important with them.
Gopi was feeling really tired and didn't feel like making anything for dinner, but made her way down the steps to the kitchen. She stopped when she saw that Rashi was still there and had not changed to go on her date. "Rashi how come you are still here? I thought you had a date with Jigar today."
Rashi turned towards Gopi and just searched her expression. "I did, I cancelled the date." Before Gopi could ask her why, Rashi held up Gopi's phone. "Why didn't you tell me the phone calls had started again?" Gopi closed her eyes and rubbed her forehead, she could feel a headache getting worst by the minute. The very thing she was trying to avoid has happened.
She sat down on the sofa tiredly. "It's nothing Rashi, don't worry about it. You know how she is, she will stop when I won't respond to her." Rashi sat next to her friend. "How can you say it's nothing? Have you seen yourself lately? You have dark circle under your eyes, you look like you have lost at leas five pounds in two weeks and I can see a migraine coming on."
Gopi smiled at her friend in amusement but Rashi became more upset. "This is not funny Gopi, I am going to tell bhai, he will take care of that mother of his." She picked up the phone to dial Amit, but Gopi stopped her.
"No Rashi, don't tell bhai. His wedding is two weeks away and he is trying to finish all his work so he and Ria could go on their honeymoon.
Rashi put the phone away and regarded her friend thoughtfully. "There is more isn't there?" She knew Gopi was still hiding something by the way she looked away from her. She took Gopi's hand in hers and squeezed. "Gopi please tell me."
Gopi blinked back her tears and looked at her best friend. "Papa came to see me today." Rashi sighed; just what Gopi needed a visit from her selfish father. "What did he say?"
Gopi laughed bitterly. "Nothing much, he just wanted to make sure that Bhai and I didn't reveal anything that would hurt his reputation. He wanted to make sure that I kept my promise." She needed to put it behind her, no matter how much she wished nothing would ever change.
She turned to Rashi. "Are you ready for the weekend? When are you leaving?" It was Rashi's turn to look away. "Rashi?" Gopi asked again when her friend didn't reply. "I am not going." Gopi frowned. "I am not leaving you alone here, especially now so your family can harass you."
"Rashi that is no excuse to not go. I can take care of myself. What is the real problem? I thought you liked Jigar." Rashi just shrugged her shoulders. "You are scared. Why?"
Rashi twisted her hands. "Gopi I am not so sure that I am right for Jigar or his family. You know how my mom is, what if she does something that might ruin things for me? Modi's are highly respected in the community. I don't want them to be embarrassed by my mom. There is also Jigar and his paranoia about certain things."
Gopi sighed she knew her friend felt guilty because Jigar did not like her. "I don't think your mom would put your relationship in jeopardy. She loves you and wants the best for you and Jigar and his family are the best. As for Jigar's dislike of me, I don't blame him. He senses that Bhai and I are hiding something and this is why he does not trust me. You shouldn't let minor detail like that stop you from being with him."
Rashi turned to Gopi in anger. "You are not a minor detail of my life Gopi. You are my sister, my best friend, I would not be where I am if it weren't for you. How can you say this?" Rashi's voice broke and tears formed in her eyes.
Gopi felt bad for hurting her friend's feelings. "I am sorry Rashi, I didn't mean to hurt you, but seriously you should not let anything stop you from being with him. I know you have feelings for him already and from what I saw last week, he also feels the same. His family likes you too. Don't let go of this opportunity."
Rashi turned to Gopi with an idea. "Why don't you come with me?" Before Gopi could refuse, Rashi interrupted her. "Please Gopi, I can't do this without you. And if you are here I will constantly worry for you and so will bhai. I know he doesn't know, but he will wonder why you don't want to attend this party even after so many people begging you to come."
Gopi sighed she knew if she didn't say yes, this will continue until tomorrow. "Okay fine, but I will come in my car tomorrow evening, you will go with Jigar and his family tomorrow morning. And it's up to you to convince the others."
Rashi smiled and hugged Gopi in delight. "Thank you! I am going to call Kinjal and let her know." Gopi watched her run out the room and thought she was just tricked into saying yes by her very best friend. She stood up and made herself go to kitchen to cook something. She knew what she needed to do once she arrived at the beach.
Next evening Gopi drove up in front of a huge two-story beach house and shook her head. She should have known Dr. Joshi's beach house wouldn't be anything but extravagant. There was a wrap around porch around the whole house but what delighted her was the balcony on the second floor.
She grabbed her bag from the back seat, got out of her car and looked around. She had been surprised at the distances between the homes but realized its because each house had its own private access to the beach. She climbed the steps to the main door, rang the bell and waited for someone to open the door. She was surprised to see a maid in a uniform open the door. She greeted the maid and introduced herself.
The inside of the house was just as extravagant. She followed the maid to the main room; she was so busy taking in the interior of the house that she didn't see Ahem standing by the stairs studying her. When he was satisfied with what he saw he spoke up. "Maria I will show miss Gopi to her room." Gopi turned towards him and froze.
Gopi looked away from him and looked around the house. "Where is everyone?" Ahem knew she was trying to delay being alone with him, but he had purposely stayed back when everyone went for a walk on the beach. He smiled in amusement at her nervousness. "You can relax, I am not going to eat you." He kept his tone dry so that he wouldn't give himself away. He waited to see if she would move forward.
Gopi realized she offended him by asking about others and looked at him, but couldn't raise her eyes past his throat. "I am not afraid of you. I was just inquiring about others." She said unconvincingly, the tremble in her voice gave her away. She moved towards him, still averting her eyes away from him.
Ahem felt his lips twitch again but didn't say anything, just turned and made his way up the steps leaving the decision to follow or not up to her.
Gopi gave one last glance towards the back of the house, expecting someone to come in and save her but then just decided to follow the gorgeous man up the stairs. Gopi groaned at her own thoughts, one look and she became a nervous fool around him. She needed to get a hold of herself and remind herself to control her feelings and emotions. She can't afford to give into to them no matter how good looking he is or how nice he appears to be. "Stay away Gopi."
Ahem waited for her at the top of the stairs and almost gave in to her reluctance at being alone with him but his stubbornness refused to let him give up.
She stopped one step below him and waited. He turned to his left and took her to the room at the end of the hall. He opened the door and waited for her to precede him. He crossed his arms and ankles and leaned against the doorframe to wait for her reaction.
Gopi stopped in the middle of the room and turned a full circle to take in the decor of the room. Her eyes landed on the double doors located on the left side of the bed and she immediately became curious to see what was beyond them. She moved towards them to see. She opened the doors and was delighted to see a balcony and beyond that the most beautiful view of the ocean. She went to the railing and braced her hand on it, she leaned forward, closed her eyes and felt the salty air coming from the ocean hitting her face and tussle her hair. In that moment she forgot everything and just enjoyed the clean, fresh air.
Ahem had followed her to the balcony doors and was enjoying the delighted expressions on her face, he was mesmerized by her happy expression and for the first time saw a genuine smile on her face when she felt the ocean's air on her face. His feet automatically moved towards her.
Gopi came back to herself when she felt his presence near her. There was only one other time she had felt this way. She did not want to remember the week she spent vacationing in Florida six months before her graduation from Nursing School. She turned towards Ahem. "It's beautiful here." Just as beautiful as it had been in Florida three and half years ago. She had been so happy that last day of vacation and sad also. Happy because she had found something that she had yearned for a long time and sad because she would have to wait until graduation to capture the feelings again.
Ahem studied her averted face and the sadness that came in her eyes, and wanted to know what made her so sad at times. He glanced towards the ocean. "Yes it is very beautiful here now." Gopi turned her head towards him and then moved to go back in the room. He followed her, and put his hands in his pockets to control the urge to make her stop and tell him what is wrong. What was making her so sad? He cleared his throat. "If you want to change and join others I will take you to them."
Gopi was now in a dilemma over what to wear. She hoped no one questioned her choice of outfits. She nodded her head in acceptance. He left the room, closing the door behind him. Gopi sat on the bed and held her head in her hands. Why had she let Rashi talk her into coming here? She knew someone would question why she always wore jeans, even on the beach. She bent and pulled up the right pant leg of her jeans. They were still the same, all visible and very ugly. The remaining memory of her car accident three years ago; atleast these didn't cause pain, just occasional spasms, but the ones that dealt the blows to her heart, the invisible ones, still managed to make her go down on her knees in pain, were hardest to deal with. Those she will have to endure for all her life, alone.
Stop feeling sorry for yourself Gopi, get up and go face the world. Don't let them see you like this, you have survived all that has happened up to now alone and will continue to do so in the future. Just put one foot in front of the other and keep moving. Gopi got up and put on her tennis shoes and kept the jean and t-shirt she came in on for the walk on the beach.
By the time Gopi came back down rest of the group had returned from their walk. Gopi met Ahem's eyes across the room and saw the same disappointment reflecting in his eyes that she felt.
Before she could figure out the reason for their mutual disappointment Ria spotted her and hurried over to hug her. "Gopi," she spoke excitedly and hugged her so hard Gopi almost lost her balance, "I am so glad you are here. We are going to have a fun weekend." Gopi just smiled at her. She was surprised when Kinjal also hugged her in greeting. "Welcome Gopi, hope it wasn't hard to find the place." Gopi automatically hugged her back. "No, I didn't have any problems, your directions were precise. Thanks" Gopi hugged her brother next. "Hey princess, how was your week?" Gopi felt her eyes sting when her brother used his affectionate nickname for her. He sensed she had been troubled this week and wanted to make her feel better in his own way. "It was fine. How about you, did you get all your work done?"
Amit studied his sister and sighed inwardly. He can see she had a rough week and could guess the reason for it also. He wished he hadn't had to go out of town for the week, but it was unavoidable. His sister hasn't been sleeping well, he could see the dark circle under her eyes and she looked tired. He hoped the weekend here in the quiet environment would help her rest and relax. "Yes I had all my work finished and flew in last night. When I called your house Rashi said you were sleeping so I told her not to disturb you." Gopi nodded and turned to greet Dr. Joshi.
"Hello, Dr. Joshi. Thanks for the invite, you have a beautiful place here." Raj chuckled at her formality and raised an eyebrow at Ahem, who was standing next to him, before turning back to Gopi.
"First let's not be so formal, we are not at work, you can call me Raj. I am glad you changed your mind and came for the party. You will enjoy it here."
Gopi decided to tease him a little. "How can I resist an invitation to cook?" Everyone looked at Raj in confusion. "Raj, did you tell her Ria and I don't know how to cook?" Kinjal asked her fianc.
Raj looked at Kinjal with serious expression. "Kinjal sweetheart, I love you and all but I heard Gopi is a great cook. Besides I was under a strict orders to convince her to come here so I may have fibbed a little."
"How little jiju? And who ordered you to convince Gopi?" Ria spoke up from where she was standing. Raj looked at Ahem in desperation and then at Kinjal before answering Ria. "I can't tell you who ordered me but I told her I wanted her to keep you and Kinjal from experimenting in the kitchen" Ria narrowed her eyes at him. "I don't know about Kinjalben but now I am definitely experimenting just for you." She glanced at her Ahembhai, who was standing beside Raj quietly, she had a feeling he was the one to order jiju to talk Gopi into attending the party. She smiled to herself, she had a feeling her favorite cousin and her sister-in-law to be had a history and she wanted to know the how and what about it. Now things were making sense to her and she sensed her cousin was desperate to spend time alone with Gopi and she is going to see what she can do to help him out.
Gopi didn't see Rashi and Jigar and wondered where they were. Before she could ask, they walked in from the front part of the house. Jigar looked happy about something.
"Jigar where have you been?" Ahem asked.
Jigar smiled at his brother while Rashi's mouth turned down in displeasure. "I have a surprise for you." Ahem knew his brother was about to dampen his happiness and when he saw Seema walk in after a minute he knew things were about to go downhill.
Everyone stood still as Seema rushed to Ahem and hugged him. "Surprise!" She pulled back and pouted. "You left Denver before I came back from my trip, how come you didn't stay?"
Ahem moved away from her and glared at Jigar. He clenched his jaw to keep from shouting at his brother. He thought he had made himself clear to Jigar and the family that he did not like Seema and did not want to marry her, but it seems once again his family decided to ignore him.
Ahem looked to Kinjal who immediately understood her Bhai wanted her to remove Seema from him. "Hi Seema, how are you? This is a surprise, Jigarbahi didn't even tell me you were coming. Come on let me show you to your room." Raj also decided to go along to make sure Kinjal didn't place her in the wrong guest room. "Hold on, I will come with you Kinjal."
Ahem looked at Jigar. "Come on, I want to speak to you about something." Jigar followed Ahem without saying anything, leaving the other four occupants of the room in confusion.
Ahem turned to Jigar as soon as they were far out of hearing range of others. "Jigar what mad you invite Seema here? I told you and our parents I am not interested in her. She is spoiled and too stuck up for my taste."
Jigar realized he might have acted hastily but couldn't give up now. "Bhai, you just need to get to know her. She is perfect for you. She is beautiful and outgoing, she is very smart, she got her MBA from a prestigious school and in now helping her father run the business."
Ahem moved close to Jigar. "I don't care how smart or pretty she is, I don't like her and I don't want to get to know her. You invited her here and it's up to you to keep her entertained. Don't push her on me, or I will leave and go back home right away. I mean it Jigar, I have already decided on the course of my life and no one is going to change my mind." Ahem walked way before he gave in the urge hold Jigar's shoulders and shake him to make him understand how serious he is about this.
Next day was spent indoors mostly. It was too hot outside and no one wanted to swim in the ocean so they decided to get the food ready for the evening. The day was spent talking, laughing and joking about things. Ria and Amit were teased more than others because they were first in line to marry.
Only time the group was somber was at breakfast, when Seema dominated the conversation. She tried to engage Ahem in business talk and trying to talk him into going back to Denver. She gave up when he stood up abruptly and told her he wasn't interested in going back to Denver and now Jigar is handling that site so she can talk to him about it. Jigar had tried to protest but one look from Ahem stopped him. Later in the day they found out that Seema decided to join some friends in Philadelphia so she left. Everyone relaxed after she departed.
Gopi stood back and observed everyone but most especially her Bhai and Ria. She smiled when Ria teased a laugh out of her usually reserved brother. She hardly paid attention to the fireworks in the sky. "What are you smiling about? You are not even looking at the fireworks show in the sky." Gopi thought no one had noticed when she moved away from the group to the far corner of the porch.
Ahem watched as her smile disappeared and sighed silently. She had avoided being alone with him all day. She found excuse to leave the room if he happened to show up in the room. She refused his invitation for a walk this morning when he realized they were the only two to be up so early in the morning. When he saw her move away from the group he decided he has had enough of her avoiding him. He told Raj to keep everyone occupied while he talked to her.
She shrugged her shoulders. "I was smiling at the way Ria teases bhai and makes him have fun. It is good to see him being playful and not so serious all the time." Ahem glanced towards his cousin and Gopi's brother and agreed. They complemented each other nicely. She continued. "She balances him, she is perfect for him." She then pointed to Rashi and Jigar. "Rashi needs someone like your brother. Sometimes she trusts too easily. Him taking time to trust people will balance Rashi's impulsiveness."
He had to admit she had valid points on both couple. He was curious enough to ask. "What about Kinjal and Raj?" She turned to him at that and then turned back to study the couple. "I think they are just perfect for each other. Everything is pretty much balanced between them to start with, they will always stand together on any issues."
Ahem moved close to her and leaned his back against the wooden porch rail to block her view of others and faced her. "And what about you?" She tried to move away but he was quick to turn and place his hands on both sides, behind her, on the railing neatly trapping her in between his arms. He moved closer to her and looked down at her. She didn't flinch or get embarrassed. It scared him to see no emotion in her eyes at all; they were blank. "How long will you pretend to not know me?" And there it was, a flicker of emotion, he wasn't so sure of what, but it was there.
Gopi stood still, no matter how much she wanted to push him out of the way and lock herself in the room she couldn't do it. The time has come to stop pretending, now it was time to explain. "I am not pretending; I just didn't think anything needed to be explained. Did you wait for me for long hours?"
Ahem frowned. "When?" Gopi very well knew he didn't show, but he also didn't know that she had waited for him all night. "Fourth of July, three years ago, Empire State Building. I would have thought me not showing up would have been an enough of an explanation. Is that not what we agreed on when we departed three and half years ago?"
Ahem clenched his hands tighter on the side rail. "So in the six months we were apart, you decided you didn't love me after all and didn't show up for our meeting place. Is this what you are saying?"
Gopi fisted her hand to control herself. "Yes that is exactly what I am saying. What was the point of showing up if not showing up would explain everything? We agreed that we wouldn't question each other or ask for explanation if we ever met again in the future."
Ahem moved back from her slowly. Had he been wrong in recognizing her? She didn't love him. He had been leaving in a dream world for three years. He turned and walked away from her. He needed to get away before he broke down in front of her.
Gopi watched him until he disappeared from the sight. "Please forgive me. But this pain is nothing compared to the pain I could give you later in life if I admit how I really feel. At least now you can move forward with your life." She wiped the tears from her face and went inside before anyone noticed her.

Hope you enjoyed it. 😊
