Chapter 41: Arnav scores a self-goal
"I can't believe you'd set such a bad example for the kids!" said Arnav huffily.
"Kids? You mean our 2 year old and 6 year old? They were asleep before we left the house and don't even know what happened. Neither do Arjun and Khushi." Replied Khushi tiredly.
"And Malli. What about her? You let her join you. She saw you hit on some random guy in a drunk haze!" he asked.
"Oh Malli! You mean the 17 year old who was almost killed by a crazy, stalker type ex-fiance? Who nursed her brother till he died of cancer? Who lived in Waterloo station for 6 months? I think she can handle it. Besides, she snuck out. We didn't invite her to go with us!" said Khushi, now a little angry.
"Well, you have an explanation for everything, but it's just not right. You can't be going around drunk and dancing on tables!" he spluttered.
"I wasn't dancing on the table, I was making an announcement. And yes, I was drunk. Very drunk. It was my bachelorette party. That's what people do at bachelorette parties Arnav!"
"Well, I still think it's a terrible example to set for the children. What are they learning from all this? That it's OK to drink so much you have to be carried to bed? It's not right Khushi."
"You know what! I'm sick of this holier-than-thou attitude. You want to set a good example for the kids? Do it yourself! Cancel your stag night. Stay home and watch Spongebob with the children."
"OK, then. I will!"
"Fine, then. Do it."
"It's done!"
"Alright then. Congrats, you are staying home with the kids tonight. The girls and I have some last minute shopping to do." She marched away leaving him looking at her with a mixture of anger and comical disappointment as he just realized he'd scored the biggest self-goal of his existence.
In another room:
"I can't believe that was you dancing with that guy!" said Akash admiringly.
"I don't know what came over me Akash. I've never done anything like that before," Payal blushed.
"Well, if getting you drunk is what it takes to unleash the inner tigress in you, then we'll have to get you drunk more often. I have never been more attracted to you than when I saw you do that sexy shimmy on the video Di showed me last night. I didn't know you had those kind of moves Payal!" he said.
"You liked it, really?" she asked confusedly.
"Have we ever had such earth-shatteringly, mind-blowingly, roof-shakingly, phenomenal sex before? I mean this morning, my god Payal. I think I saw stars!" Akash cuddled her close. Payal just snuggled closer and blushed a fiery shade of red.
"And you're not hung over or anything? That's amazing." He said, amazed.
"Well, I drank a lot of water between drinks. And I ate stuff too," said Payal.
"Sexy and perspicacious! That's my Payal," said Akash, dropping a kiss on her head. "It's a good thing you were so out of it, you wouldn't let go of me last night. Nani went into Malli's room, and we had this room to ourselves!" he sighed contentedly.
"What time is it?" asked Payal, thinking the pillow talk had gone on for long enough.
Akash glanced at his watch. "Wow! It's 9.30. The kids must be up! How come they didn't come in here to wake us?" he wondered.
"OhmiGod! 9.30. What must Dadiji think? And Arnav and Khushi. Akash, let me go!" she pulled away, as he tried to hold her back, grinning wolfishly.
Payal slipped away and into the bathroom shaking her head. She smiled. She'd seen stars too. She decided to drink more often from now on. Akash heard singing completely off key in the bathroom. "Oh, yeah!" he thought. She was 'happy'. Only 2 things made Payal sing in the bathroom. One was when her kids did well in anything, be it school or extra-curricular activites. Two, was when she was 'happy'.
Later that evening:
"You did what?" Are you crazy?" asked Nigel.
"You're a fool Arnav. I always knew it. I warned Minnie against you. She didn't listen. My Minnie is marrying an idiot. An idiot who canceled his own bachelor party!" said Freddy sternly.
"My wife is pregnant man! Do you know what that's like? The Lamaze classes! The back rubs. The midnight cravings! Do you know what I have to deal with? And this was my first excuse to drink in months. Months! She hasn't let me touch alcohol in months. And you go and cancel it! Bloody fool!" moaned Aadit.
"I was just trying to tell her it wasn't a good example for the kids, and she you know," he trailed away weakly.
"She turned the table on you like the expert she is!" said Freddy grimly. "Serves you right for imposing your insecurity on her fun!"
"It's not like that. I'm not insecure!" protested Arnav.
"Yeah right!" said Freddy.
"Hey Akash, you tell me. If you saw your wife dancing that closely with another man, wouldn't it make you mad?" asked Arnav, looking for some support in this ocean of discontent.
"Well, yeah. I guess," Akash said uncomfortably, shifting his weight from one foot to the other and looking down.
"Don't even look at him for support. He was totally turned on by Payal's grinding routine," said Aadit.
"How did you?" Akash looked at Aadit open-mouthed.
"My wife saw you staring at yours in that video. The word she used was 'salivating'!' quipped Aadit. Akash grinned shyly. "She was pretty hot man!" he said.
Arnav groaned. Freddy smirked. Nigel just looked on cluelessly as usual. He had never understood heterosexual preferences and he never would. He just thought them weird.
"So we're stuck at home because we're setting a good examples for the children?" asked Aadit, crestfallen.
"Correction. Arnav is stuck at home because HE's setting a good example for the children. The rest of us are carrying on as planned. We are hitting the bars tonight, and that's that. Sorry Arnav, I had planned on steeling myself for a visit to a strip club so you could get a lap dance or two," said Freddy making a pained face. "But I guess that won't be necessary now, since you're not going." He finished happily.
"So, let's go?" asked Aadit, relieved.
"Yes, let's go now. Before I feel sorry for Arnav and offer to help him with the kids," said soft-hearted Nigel.
"He has Malli, don't you worry Nigella!" said Freddy fondly.
Arnav looked on in disgust as Aadit, Akash, Freddy and Nigel walked out in a single file, shaking their heads at his stupidity.
"This is what I get for being a do gooder," he grimaced. "I have not 2, but 4 children to set a good example for tonight!" He walked into the playroom dejectedly. 30 minutes later, he was at the end of his tether. Sheila and little Khushi were fighting over a doll. Nita was cantankerous for no specific reason. And Arjun wanted to climb trees. He wouldn't understand that he couldn't climb trees after sundown. Arnav wanted to tear his hair out in despair. Then he decided it was time to bring in reinforcements. He knocked on Malli's door.
"What is it?" she asked sullenly.
"Can you help amuse the children? They're very cranky," he asked.
"Nope. Sorry. I'm grounded. Can't leave the room. Can't go anywhere or do anything," she chewed gun making that loud chk-chk noise he hated, as she chewed steadily.
"Come on Mallu. Be a sport. Help out here. I'm alone with 4 brats!" he pleaded.
"No can do. You grounded me yourself," she said, eyes twinkling.
"OK. What if I un-ground you? Will you help me then?"
"Am I ungrounded for good? Like I can go to all the wedding parties and functions?"
"Yes!" he sighed. He was desperate.
"OK, let's go!" she said, her face brightening perceptibly.
He was amazed at her skill with the children. Within 15 minutes she had them either painting something or listening to her tell a story. And she told him Nita was hungry, so he fed Nita, leading her to pipe down immediately.
"The price of peace!" he thought. "I'm a total failure as a parent. If Mallu can do this to me now, I don't even know what Sheila and Nita will put me through when their turn comes!" he grimaced. And then he grimaced again as Nita spat the spinach out in his lap.
In the meanwhile:
"So I told HIM to set a good example for the kids and stay home with them, and escaped for a quiet evening out with you guys," laughed Khushi.
"Good job Khushi bitiya. The men must always know where their place is. And it's our job to show it to them if they forget!" said Naniji.
"Err…where is their place Naniji?' Asked Lavanya tongue-in-cheek.
"On top in bed. Below us, everywhere else!" said Naniji outrageously. The girls laughed uproariously at Naniji's statement.
"Actually, I don't mind being on t.." Payal's voice trailed away as she realized everyone was staring at her as if she'd lost her mind.
Naniji was the first to recover. "It's OK Payal bitiya. I understand. Akash has always been lazy. Even when he was young, he always wanted me to tie his shoelaces, his mother to do the homework. I understand completely," she nodded sagely. Anjali and Khushi laughed their heads off at this new, improved Nani of 2012. Gone was the Nani who disliked Lavanya for her clothes and for a silly "character dheela" dance. This Nani was, in Mumbai speak, ekdum dhinchak!
"So Payal, I heard you saw stars in the day time today?" Khushi teased.
"What!" said Payal, shocked that Khushi knew. "How did you know?"
"Akash told Arnav who told me, of course. Men can't keep a secret. At least, not one of this kind. You should know that by now!" said Khushi guffawing.
"Payal saw stars in the daylight? How? I mean, that's not possible!" protested Anajli.
"Anjali bitiya. You've been married twice and are pregnant with a baby. If you don't already know, I feel sorry for you!" lamented Naniji.
"What?" said Anajli, "Oh!" she smiled as her eye widened in understanding. "Oh, that!"
"O is correct!" quipped Lavanya.
"You know your Nanaji was very.." Naniji's statement was never finished because a chorus of protests drowned her out. No one wanted to hear what Nanaji was like. It was, well, ewww.
"I was going to say your Nanaji was a very good amateur astronomer, that's all!" said Naniji, surprised at the outcry. "He had a telescope up on the terrace and everything."
They spent the rest of the evening reminiscing about old days and long lost friends and periodically teasing Payal about her 'astronomy lessons!' When they went home they found the kids asleep in their beds, Nita sprawled on Arnav in his lap. Arnav snoring loudly on the couch, and Malli in her room reading quietly. Khushi smiled as she woke him up gently and took Nita out of his embrace and up to her room.
She was happy. She was getting married in 3 days. And she was the luckiest girl in the world, she mused.
Next chapter is Freddy's cocktail party for Khushi.
Now, fire away people. I'm waiting to know your thoughts. 😊
Cheers!
