A brief talk with director Dharmesh Tiwari, Daman Mann who plays Indra and Nirmal Bali who essays the role of Hiranya Kashyap the Rakshasha who conquers Indralok.
He started his film career with a Bhojpuri film Jahan Bahe Ganga Ki Dhar and has done several films including Ramesh Behl's Jawani Boney Kapoor's Judaai, Loafer and Hulchul. He has directed several mythological serials like Shivmahapuran, Gayatri, Hey Ram (T.Series), Ramayan and Vishnupuran for BR Films, Shri Krishna Leela in Malayalam, Tamil, Telegu, Hindi and other Indian languages and Bhrigu Rishi for Balaji Teleserials. He has also directed mythological films like Sant Gyaneshwar and Jai Jwala and has played Naarad in umpteen films. He has held the coveted post of General Secretary if Cine & TV Artistes Association and is currently the president of All India Confederation. Why did you think of making a serial on Lord Balaji?
The times and life of Lord Balaji has a lot to give us in today's times. We can inculcate a lot of good vibes from it. The serial will highlight the uniqueness of this avatar of Maha Vishnu as Balaji. In this avatar Lord Vishnu leaves Vaikunt to be on earth to protect mankind from the evil effects of this present period, the Kalyug. Were you approached by the producers on your past merits?
As you may be aware that I have directed serials based on Ramayan, Mahabharata, Shivpuran, Vishnupuran etc. It may be a blessing from the Gods who wanted me to round off with with a serial on Shree Tirupati Balaji. Will you take any cinematic liberties with the incidents?
No, I will ahere to the original story and dramatise only if the producers ask for it. As it is our mythologicals are full of drama. Have you kept any code for your artistes?
Yes, every artiste has to respect the attire he is wearing in the serial. I wouldn't like to see any artiste dressed up as a Devata to publicly smoke or make wild gestures. I have decided to be on a strict boiled diet until I finish the serial. I also suggest my artistes to have vegetarian food while shooting. This in a way will keep a person gentle and pious. Daman Mann
Daman is playing Bhagwan Indra in Shree Tirupati Balaji. He has earlier done a lot of mythological serials for B. R.Films, Cinevista, T Series etc and has enacted different characters. You have played several mythological characters. Which role has been the easiest to play?
I found that playing Bhagwan Indra is the easiest. My character and body language gels automatically with that of Bhagwan. What is the scene you are shooting right now?
Bhagwan is the king of Devtas. Having got a vardaan from Bramha, he defeats all the demons and takes back the kingdom of heaven. Have you done any films earlier?
Earlier I played a cop who kills Arbaaz Khan in Garv. I am currently working in a thriller Sanam Teri Bahon Mein directed by Ratan Aulakh. How is it working with Dharmeshji?
Dharmeshji is a pleasure to work with. He is a director who knows his job well and is very quick. Given a chance I would repeatedly work with him. Nimay BaliNimay plays the demon Hiranya Kashyap who is in fact Bhakt Prahlads' father. He is also adept at playing mythological characters and has done Ravi Chopra's Vishnu Puran, Sanjay Khan's Mahabharat, Chandrakanta, Yug and Dushman. Could you tell us about Hiranya Kashyap's character?
Hiranya Kashyap being Bhakt Prahlad's father wants to kill his son knowing very well that it would be his son who would be the cause of his death. This serial will also feature Hiranya Kashap's sister Holika after whom the tradition of burning the Holi pyre started.
What do you have to say about the serial?
Well, it is an ambitious project of Doordarshan and I feel it will bring back the hysteria of watching mythological serials on TV after Mahabharat. Plus we have a good director in Dharmeshji. According to me this is going to be a well-received serial given the fact that it will be telecast all the days of the week.
