Arnav's journey
Arnav tightened the muffler around his neck as he walked out into the chilly night. London streets were not new to him; spending summers here during childhood and then the long stretch of 6 years for completing his higher studies had virtually made it his second home. He remembered his reluctance to return once his MBA was complete but his father was adamant. "Twenty-two is not an age where I should be tied down in the family business," he had argued with his father but one sentence from him silenced him. Sighing, he remembered how one mistake had cost him his entire life's reputation in front of his loving parents. They left the world knowing that their son, their only son, the apple of their eye had done that. Then they didn't even live to see …………… his thoughts were disturbed by a sharp horn followed by some expletives as he had carelessly stepped onto a very busy street.
He walked into the Queen's Theatre to see the musical Les Misrables playing there. It was a story of redemption, of trying to outrun your past but failing. The two Acts didn't leave Arnav in any better a mood. "So much for trying to think! Had khushi been here she would have laughed at my choice of entertainment. Totally opposite of desi" he laughed to himself. And then she joined him just like that, and walked with him to his hotel. The tinkle of her payals, and the clink of her bangles gave him good company.
And then she was with him throughout his stay in London, commenting on the paintings at the Art galleries he went to, waving off the abstracts with contempt. "yeh kahan lai aaye hain app hamen?" he could even hear her complaining. She even accompanied him on his morning walks, at the museums, in the shopping malls where he lazily picked up the stuff ordered by Nani and her brigade back home. At the cinema she quietly slipped in on the seat next to him happily as he sat watching some bollywood flick. Why was he there? He was in a mood of something Desi!
With his elbows resting on his knees, he sat at the edge of his bed deep in thought. Sighing he raised himself and threw himself back on the bed trying to reach some conclusion. One thing was clear he had fallen irrevocably in love with Khushi, she was all that he wasn't, a perfectly fitting complement. Even before he had departed for London he had known it. He knew she was his comfort zone, for he was most comfortable and at ease around her. She had been able to bring out the teasing side of him, he had a strong faith that she hadn't just put up with him but had understood him. He had gone away from her to check if this was merely a passing infatuation, and it wasn't, he wanted to spend the rest of his life with her for the best and for the worst, in sickness and in health, he knew as long as he was with her, things will be alright, even if not then her being there will make them bearable.
And he had also got the answer for the most pressing question, the question that had prevented him not once but twice from finishing his sentence and just stopping at "Mujhe farak parta hai, dammit, kyu k….." He had to be as sure about his love as he was about his life, himself, the sun that rose and set every day. For he was afraid that if this was an infatuation he may leave her hurt and injured beyond healing. He took out an envelope, put on his overcoat and muffler and went out. Within half an hour he was back after having couriered the envelope that had his past folded along the sheets of papers he had put in. He had to do it for he didn't want history to repeat itself, history that had once left him, his family torn apart, made him lock himself inside him and then people never saw the glimpse of the Arnav Singh Raizada he was. If callous is what they had so unfairly called him, he became one; if money-obsessed was the term they used for him, he turned into one. Life was unfair to him, he took his revenge by being unfair to it, he decided to write his own destiny then, nothing was going to come into his way again that could weaken him and love weakens so he had denounced it. Little did he know that destiny had been written for him, he couldn't resist what life threw at him and he fell in love…………for the first time in his life!
Khushi's ordeal
True to her name, Khushi had a smile plastered on her face, her Jiji had just got married, she had to be happy, otherwise what will everyone think! There were endless rituals even after the Wedding, something she would have enjoyed thoroughly any other time but not this time. At nights she cried her heart out, she was tired of doing things for the sake of people, she wanted to cry for she missed him terribly, a grief enveloped her heart, her altogether, it was as if a cloud of melancholy traveled with her. She even envied Arnav for being so uncaring about people, he lived life on his own terms uncaring for what people may think, say or do! Every time she entered the Raizada Mansion she looked around to catch a glimpse of the face which had grown so dear to her, whenever one of the Raizada cars stopped in front of their house she ran out expecting the person whom she loved beyond the point of no return, who was in every beat of her heart.
"Devi maiyaan please bring him back!" she would beseech every night, followed by a prayer for his well being. How many times she had actually felt him somewhere near her, talking to her, teasing her, challenging her. 7 days had passed and even Nani hadn't said anything about him, how her ears craved for even one little teeny bit of information on him, the khadoos laad governor didn't wasn't even on facebook or twitter where she could atleast have gone to put her heart on ease. She laughed at her own thought of the mighty ASR being active on Internet. Why will someone who didn't let anyone into his personal space let the whole world peep into it!
Her latest hobby, at times of rare peace, was holding and fingering her Payal, it always took her back to the diwali night when she had first felt her love, his love, though what followed hurt her deeply. Her pink dupatta took her back to the day when he had planted that tease of a kiss. Deep inside her heart she had this feeling that there was something he felt for her, the time when Lavanya fell but he made sure that candle wax didn't scald her skin, when he hid the fact that it was she who had broken his favorite vase, in the hospital how he had tried to comfort her, and how could she forget the goons he had so mercilessly beaten when they had hurt her.
"Acha, Arnav bitwa is coming in 2 days….," she heard Buaji say on the phone, she ran outside and quickly asked, "whose call is it buaji, who is it?" the urgency in her voice surprised Madhumati who had been wondering if her sanka devi was a bit too sad at her sister going away. "Arai parmeswari, Anjali bitya was telling me about how Payal and Akaash had decided to go away for 15 days….," she was cut off by "and what else was she saying buaji?" Khushi asked impatiently. "Ahi re nand kisore, umar sai pehlay hi sathya (gone senile before age) gai!" buaji lamented. "Kuch nai, bass ye ke Arnav bitwa is coming in 2 days," she added infusing a new spirit in her niece who couldn't even loudly cheer at this news. The door bell rang giving a perfect excuse to khushi to jump and run to the door trying to vent out some of the excitement she felt. A courier person was standing outside.
"Courier! For whom bhaya?" she asked surprised. "Is Ms Khushi Kumari Gupta here?" he asked. Khushi told him she was her and took the envelope he handed her. Slowly she turned and walked to her room, for it said that it was from Arnav Singh Raizada………………..
