Unlike his past birthdays, Karan Johar has no grand plans for the big day tomorrow. The 30-something director will have a quiet birthday celebration with his mother since all his friends are away. Karan is currently in London and will return just in time to blow out the candles. "I want to spend it with my mother. There will be no party because all my friends are out of the country. Shah Rukh is in Malaysia shooting," he says.
Meanwhile, the filmmaker is euphoric about his Cannes trip. Even if news about being denied permission to enter his hotel in Cannes through the front door along with Preity Zinta made news, Karan Johar remains unperturbed.
"It was so stupid that it doesn't even warrant a response. We were just asked to go through another door, which we did. A channel correspondent spotted us and reported that we were denied entry. I guess such 'news' makes sense to some people. I'd rather focus on the release of my film," says Karan.
Currently, Kabhi Alvidaa Na Kehna is on the top of his mind. He has managed to sell KANK to Germany, France and Poland. "Other 'non-traditional' international centres are hugely receptive to the film," he says. Barely recovering from Cannes, Karan cannot get over the prevalence of Bollywood star power in that part of the world. "Half of the Bollywood industry was present there. It was fun running into Ash, Rakeysh Mehra, Suneel Darshan, Vishal Bhardwaj and the others. It didn't feel like I was away from home," says Karan. "The support that Shah Rukh Khan has in Europe is amazing. We discovered first-hand in Cannes how much Shah Rukh matters to the market out there. We had a blast at Cannes. Preity and I saw several movies, including Da Vinci Code. Now I'm in London. I've got a series of meetings lined up before I return home."
Karan's nervousness over KANK is evident. "I feel KANK has already been released. That's how involved I am with the film. The trailer will be shown along with Fanaa this week." What about the book on KANK that was released in Cannes? "It was more like an elaborate catalogue, mainly pictorial."
