Agneepath Movie Poster
After a fall in collections on its second day at the box-office, Hrithik Roshan's Agneepath managed to pick up slightly on Saturday making Rs. 13.5 crore at the windows.
Agneepath may have dipped on Friday, but collections went for a slightly more upward turn on January 28. The film had taken a stupendous start on Republic Day opening with Rs. 23 crore and went on to make Rs. 12.5 crore on January 27.
BACKGROUND INFO
I was surprised that there were very few shows for the film that too on a Saturday. Considering this was a 'big' film and from Kjo banner I expected a bigger release over here vis a vis other biggies.
The film is a remake of a classic (this is the perception I have and I have NOT see the original) Now all are aware of the plot so let's get into it.
The first half is faultless and I never felt it dragged and found it thoroughly gripping. It's in the second half where it loses momentum and starts to lose steam. More than a film it's a film which has truly some amazing scenes and moments that for me lifts the whole film and experience. Yes the film is dark and loud at times and unfortunately Priyanka is quite annoying in the film even when she dies.
Now I didn't mind any of the violence or the gory content but I was seriously angered by Rauf Lala (Rishi Kapoor) character in how he would sell underage girls. That for me was too much and if that was the intended purpose to despise the man then it worked.
I loved the intro of Kancha Cheena (and the build up to this monster by his father) his walk, mannerisms and then outburst was an insight into the demeanor of this beast. For any revenge film the villain needs to be as strong as the hero and in this case we have exactly that. I applaud Sanju for the makeover and doing something completely different to what he has done before. He definitely is a badass.
WHAT WORKED
1) Intro scene of Kancha
2) The death of Denanath Chauhan
3) Intro of Vijay Chauhan
4) Vijay Chauhan going back to Mandwa
5) Vijay Chauhan rescuing his sister and her finding out his identity
6) The climax (but it dragged a bit too much)
WHAT DIDN'T WORK
1) I don't mind loud but this was loud for too long. It felt like every character was loud minus Rauf Lala
2) The length – could easily have been trimmed by 20 mins or so and the whole marriage track was not required. It was a joy killer in many ways.
3) Like I mentioned above the angle of selling underage girls didn't stick with me and just made me very uneasy (and I have seen much worse in other films but don't know what happened this time)
PERFORMANCES
1) Hrithik Roshan – I felt it was a very good performance. He portrayed hurt, anger everything through the eyes and one roots for him. When he recites the Agneepath poems it just elevates the performance many notches. One of his best undoubtedly.
2) Sanjay Dutt – loved the intro and his initial few scenes. The way he kills Deenanath Chahan is evil but at times he went a bit too loud and the laugh didn't seem convincing. Not bad nonetheless. This is another feather in his very impressive filmography.
3) Rishi Kapoor – very good esp when he meets Kancha for the first time and then when he has a confrontation with HR. I can fully understand why many are referring to Rishi kapoor as the 'outstanding' performance in the film.
4) Priyanka Chopra – not much to do but dances well in Gun Gun Guna and looks much better than she did in her last few films.
5) Katina Kaif – HOT HOT and HOT
There are 2 things which really stayed with and still do I as I type this many hours later and that is the bond of HR with his sister. Now she was what 10 or so years younger than HR in the film and I have a sibling who is much younger than me and I have a special bond with him. That really worked for me and the song Abhi Mujhe Main Kahin was perfectly placed and really hit me and that alone made the film worth it.
The second aspect which was done remarkably well were the Agneepath peoms and my friend told me that they were in the original. Simply fantastic and for that alone I will very soon watch the original Agneepath just to check them out.
MUSIC
I'll be honest that the music when released did not make much of an impression on me with the exception of Chinki Chameli but I loved the songs in the film. The music directors delivered with a solid soundtrack and the songs help the film move forward. Just hearing the legend Udit Naryan sing for a few secs in Gun Gun Guna was a treat and then Sonu Nigam owning the song Abhi Mujhe Main Kahin. A special mention to Dev Shree Ganesha which was done on a very large scale. I will definitely download the soundtrack.
AUDIENCE REACTION
For once this was not clear in any such way. The film I believe does NOT carry negative wom but it's also not a WOW sort of film. The audience seemed to be like yeah seen the film now where shall we go eat (or was that me
I will make a prediction as I always do once I've seen a film and I'll say that 105 is what the film will do.
RATINGw
A very good one time watch and just for some excellent moments is worth seeing. 4 out 5
