Chapter Eleven
Tears Lost in the Ocean
"No Mami, I haven't done anything, I am telling the truth" Gopi's voice trembled on fragile grounds, filled with terror from fear of facing her Aunt's wrath for undisclosed reasons yet. "Please Mami" she guarded with her hand in attempt to shield away the next coming attack aimed for her face, "I swear to you, I don't know what you're talking about" she looked to Rashi Behen for lenience, who stood staring blankly at her, arms folded across her chest idly, and eyes that kept squinting with demand of an answer from her.
"First you've committed a sin, and you dare to carry on defending yourself, like you haven't a clue in the world of what I'm asking you!" Urmila's deadly words fired at her.
"But I really don't know Mami" she begged lamely, tugging profoundly onto a bit of skin at her neck solemnising her gesture with the pledging by the name of Kanha Ji, in attempt to stern her honesty.
"Are you saying that my Rashi dikhra is lying to me - to her Mother!" Urmila defended, trying to sound aghast by the very thought of it.
"No! I didn't mean that Mami, I'm unsure to what it is that Rashi Behen says that she knows of" Gopi tried to reply genuinely, shaking with fear.
"You and Ahem Modi!" Urmila struck back.
Gopi's eyes widened from the sound of Ahem's name being said to her by her Mami, and that too in a manner which revealed the nature of her aforementioned accusations earlier by Urmila's resentful words, which led to believe that the relationship they shared was one far too cosy for a pair of strangers. Her senses abandoned obedience as the worst possible scenarios were being pictured in her mind, afraid to say anything her quivering hand offered solace to her shaken lips. The thought of uttering a single word after that moment would cause her to break down within seconds, giving away everything without saying a thing.
Urmila released a knowing gasp, which indicated that her doubts were correct. "This means my Rashi dikhra is telling the truth."
"I knew something was wrong Mummee," Rashi butted in to brag her glory "the minute I walked into that room I noticed Ahem Ji's agitation toward me, it was like I was made to feel like an intruder between them, and then when I asked Gopi about the incident later - she stuttered ridiculously before muddling up her words and decided escape was a better option. After that I kept close eye on both of them - and Mummee I noticed that Ahem Ji was within close distance of Gopi the whole time" she explained her findings like a private detective that had still needed to summon a conclusion of the whole case yet, "and then the strangest thing happened - Jigar Ji and Ahem Ji were both in the kitchen with Gopi, but the whole time Ahem Ji was throwing teasing remarks at Gopi which even Jigar Ji was unable to understand - being the poor innocent fellow that he is, but I wasn't fooled. I understood immediately that Gopi and Ahem Ji had shared a lot more then a few words in that room behind closed doors."
Following this heated conversation, Urmila ambushed Gopi with violent attacks before taking her into a room to give her beatings to make her talk of the events that occurred between herself and Ahem. But Gopi revealed nothing, "tell me what it is that's going on between you and Ahem, speak now!" she thundered.
"Please Mami, I beg you!" Gopi pleaded through her screams for mercy instead. She folded her hands to implore for sympathy, but nothing softened the wicked heart of Urmila - who cupped her face to cause her more pain, and squeezed her jaw until Gopi whimpered like a homeless puppy, tears dampened her face but only made matters worse; her pain and degree of torture became more promising for effect and encouraged Urmila to keep beating her until she spoke up.
"Don't think that you're going to get married into a rich household and you'll be able to do as you wish. What did you have in mind" Urmila mocked, "that you'll trap everyone in your innocence and rule the roost once you get married into the Modi household! You've had your fair share of fun, from today on, you will not leave this house without my permission, do you hear me" she warned, "now go pack your bags," she ordered as she threw her out of the room.
"Rashi - call Jigar, and inform him that you have something that needs his attention as soon as possible!" Urmila said as soon as Gopi was out of sight. She sounded serious and whatever it was going through her head, seemed to have portrayed end results to her alone.
"But Mummee, what am I to say-"
"Don't ask questions just do it" she intruded abruptly.
"Only God knows what's going on in Mummee's head, I hope she doesn't mess things up for me" she muttered in a murky whisper as her Mother moved away. Her lower teeth gripped onto her upper lip for pass time to think of a better solution then this, being hasty could damage things permanently, and Urmila seemed pretty heated up from the most recent discovery - or whatever it had been that she'd understood from Gopi's silence, and to make a decision during such hype could easily lack the gift of common sense. Daring to become decisive for the time being herself - she decided that calling Jigar right now was not a wise deed, and figured to put that order on hold with full secrecy.
Ahem paced his office in sheer bother, with nothing to do he had to keep himself occupied with the most brittle means necessary. Looking at the clock which suddenly grew lazy ten minutes before reaching lunchtime; it was taking forever before he could leave the corporate doors. The closer truth associated with the ticking of the clock was the day of the wedlock growing closer as the crack of dawn broke through many mornings with such ease, but only to Ahem's restless eyes did it haunt him like a ghost that sought revenge from him alone. No matter how much he traumatised his relationship with Anita, she would still rebound like a boomerang that attacked its own clumsy owner after throwing it at the furthest distance for greater impact with too much confidence.
By lunchtime he would drive to the Mandir that Gopi was known to visit almost everyday to catch a glimpse of her, but he wouldn't surprise her just in case she would find him too common in such a short amount of time. However giving his eyes a little pretty sight would go a long way, rather then standing by and trying to remember her face ninety-nine percent of the time, he owed it to his active business mind to wander off on a one and a half hour vacation to Isle Gopi. Just thinking about her made him feel like he was sailing in cool waters in a world just for the two of them. At times he'd begun doubting that the previous life of rejecting her as his wife was all in fact a bizarre dream, or a lifetime from another realm. The lifetime he faced at present, was no plain sail he could whole heartedly admit, but the adventures of winning her hand were surely a trait he was beginning to enjoy far more then he could've imagined. It was like having his own love story to tell his kids, with the thickening of the plot taking toll just when all members of the family had agreed that their relationship was a dead end - did the most awaited phenomenal miracle occur in his life - gob smacked at the finding of events, and disarrayed by seeing the impossible being performed before his eyes. He was left with no choice but to eliminate the laws of nature that could stand apart a world of humans and something more unexplainable: a place that could individually answer prayers that had never been read!
What a story to tell on, first to his children and then grandchildren. He obliviously smiled at the thought of the his love story travelling through the years and over time becoming immortal amongst his lineage. In his mind he knew he was crazy already, but if his craziness extended his happiness to heights beyond an eternal flame then he was happily labelled the fool who loved twice.
Gopi wanted to cry alone, the pain in her back from the whipping Urmila tormented her with was infesting at infinite gain, to such extent that it would be considered to be almost impossible for any human being to bear such pain for long amounts of time. She had cried so much that her tears had become tired with entertaining her depression all morning, but her sadness did not host the pain that travelled through her wounds, it was for knowing that she would be forced to accept a life that was offered to her without Ahem Ji.
When her Mami had told her to pack her bags she knew well that she intended to drive Gopi away from Rajpal Nagar for a prolonged amount of time. The date of the wedding was near, yet Urmila hadn't revealed what she had decided to do about her and Ahem's relationship. Although she hadn't made it particularly clear that she knew of the status they both shared, it was obvious that she found her association with Ahem disturbing and therefore announced that Gopi was to move away at once. The more scarier thought came afterwards however, as Gopi hadn't a clue in the world of where it was Mami had planned on deporting her to, and moreover how would she inform Ahem Ji that everything would have to be over between them. If he found her gone so suddenly, he would be sure to think that she betrayed his love, and that all his words failed in offering her enough integrity to not let her consider rejecting him in person - belittling him in every aspect.
He walked up the stairs and glanced throughout the Mandir far and wide, but found no trace of Gopi, which seemed a little random. He headed towards the large Kanha Ji's Idol kept for worship and offered his prayers, gesturing his hands together respectively. "Jai Shri Krishna Pandit Ji" he greeted and stood there dumbly thinking of a way to enquire about Gopi. The conversation went on a little shy, as exchanges of the families wellbeing's were centre of attention. "Mom and Kaki Ji have sent their blessings to Gopi too Pandit Ji, but I can't seem to spot her anywhere, is she not well or something, it's hardly likely of her to stay at home?" he asked interested with concern.
"You're right dikhra, but she hasn't been here all morning, which I do find very odd. It can only mean she must be ill, or else she would never compromise her time for something else over Kanha Ji."
This was hardly the response Ahem had hoped for, but his words were to be considered. It would be most inappropriate for him to land their doorstep, although the matter wasn't highly worrying, it worried Ahem nevertheless, his gut twisted in the direction of something signalling that things were wrong, or at least not as they should be. "Thank you Pandit Ji, I'll tell my elders of the news, they'll be sure to call and find out. I'll take your leave now."
"Dikhra" the Pandit Ji called out before Ahem could leave, "I just remembered that perhaps its the day of her Parents barsi (death anniversary), and that's why she hasn't come to the Mandir as yet" he informed.
Ahem no doubt became confused by this, "but Pandit Ji - how can you be sure, isn't her Parents barsi on the same day as her birthday?" he was quick to ask.
"On her birthday?" he said with equal confusion as Ahem. "No. Of course not, that's not possible, these two events have no relation with each other whatsoever" he replied reassuringly.
"Really" Ahem was quick to fire back, "but I precisely remember that Urmila Mami said that the two events fell on the same day."
Pandit Ji sighed knowingly, "all I must say to you my son - is that do not believe everything people tell you" he answered patting Ahem on his shoulder, "in fact I'm not so sure if Gopi is aware of this dreadful news. I've been strictly told to never tell this to her by Urmila Behen, but this year I had a word with her Mama Ji in private before he left a month ago, and he mentioned that he'll be sure to let Gopi know of this, however terrible this news may be, she has the full right to know."
"Yes exactly Vedika Behen, do not show any sympathy toward her whatsoever" said Urmila down the phone to her sister-in-law.
"What if she opposes to anything I say?" asked Vedika, Dhawal's mother. "You know that we are to attend two weddings in a row of a relative this month, first it will be the brother's wedding, followed by the sister, and Urmila Behen you know that I can't take Gopi with me over there, then how will I keep an eye on what she does?"
"Don't worry about trivial matters, that gawar isn't capable of using her brains, she won't know if you've locked her in the house for two weeks let alone worrying about her getting out. She won't have the audacity to disobey your rules when you leave, but at first you have to keep her at your house, and make sure that no one finds out that she's staying with you Bhabi" Urmila pestered.
"Fine, send her tomorrow itself, and I'll send Dhawal to pick her up from the station" said Vedika Behen reluctantly, but willing to do her sister-in-law come best friend a favour any day.
The whole day had rushed past Ahem, but he was constantly reminded of the words uttered by Pandit Ji, which roamed around his mind as they pleased.
According to him it was clearly known that Gopi's birthday fell on the same day as her Parents death anniversary, then how was it that today the news differed from what he knew already, it made no sense. Could it mean that Gopi was unaware of the truth, and if so why would her own Mami tell her such a terrible thing on the only day that she could freely celebrate. Her Mama and Mami are the only people to know the truth of Gopi's Parents death, and if according to the evidence it was Urmila Mami that had lied as an only possibility, then the only other person left to answer would be her Mama Ji - who was out of town for several months yet, which meant: finding out the truth was a long way away.
As evening dwelled, Ahem found it impossible to spend another night without seeing Gopi. So after dinner, it was decided by him that he would see her at any cost, and as an ultimatum if that meant going to her house then that would be an option he wouldn't consider presenting himself with the alternative of a no with.
"Why can't you tell Mami to let me go with you Gopi Behen?" Panna pleaded, "you know she'll treat me horribly when you go, and I don't like getting told off all the time."
Gopi stayed quiet the whole time, continuing with her packing and not responding to her sister's questions. One word was all it would take for her to break down, and that would instantly cause Panna to worry more and it wouldn't be long before she figured out something had went wrong during the time she spent at school.
"Mami is sending me to visit her family, who are holding a big function in their home and they need plenty of help, that's all Panna" Gopi finally answered, "now go to sleep, I don't want you worrying over things that aren't important."
"Are you telling me the truth Gopi Behen?" Panna interrogated warily.
"Of course I am" she answered, and went toward her tucking her into bed or else she would never stop firing questions at her, "I'll be back in no time, until then you have Kanha Ji to play with, won't you."
"Okay Gopi Behen if you say so, I'll believe you. I'm not saying that I want to believe you, but I will because you're insisting that I should do so" she said with her dominant side taking over as she huddled against her duvet waiting to fall into a dreamy sleep.
Gopi felt terrible to lie to her only sister, but she had no choice, it was only for Panna's benefit. The truth was she didn't know where Urmila Mami was to send her tomorrow morning, but the excuse she presented Panna with was one that had been true on many accounts previously. All she knew this time was that she was to board a train half-four in the morning. Leaving only a few hours of sleep for her, which would be hours spent in vain if she was to embrace the luxury of sleeping. What a sinner it would make her to worry about the span of her sleep, while Ahem would wake up to find her betrayal just when he had come so close to her. If only she could tell him just one that she did love him, but it seemed that all was lost now, no different from losing her tears in an ocean, where they would go unnoticed, like orphans in the sea.
The sky looked sad mourning the moonless night, like an empty heart with no one to love, just as she would be when morning broached. Standing all alone under the dull night sky she remembered the day she first saw Ahem Ji, he was sat beside Anita Ji in the Raas Leela she participated in, and although he hadn't noticed her at first, there was something about him that had driven her attention only on him. Like a pulse that beat outside of her heart, there was no fight in locating it, because it did after all belong to her - where a heart beats, a pulse races, just like that.
When she laid eyes on Ahem Ji, she couldn't describe it in any other words, it was like she wanted to chase her own heartbeat; his eyes held so much mystery when they became fixed on her shortly after her entry, a stare that held acknowledgement, that told her he knew her from some place before. It summoned a connection between them that no one could identify, except the two of them. That night many things changed in her life, unexpected as they were, but real in every sense. Jigar Ji's proposal was brought for her and although Urmila was reluctant at first, something triggered in her to go ahead with the alliance, but during every encounter it was uncommon that her and Ahem Ji were eventually left together, like they were meant to be together except they were not. Every meeting plotted against her moralities, being engaged to another man she couldn't stop herself from swaying toward Ahem Ji, hindsight told her this was wrong, but her heart became dumb, her mind became deaf and went on blindly like she was spellbound rightfully. Even now, after Urmila Mami's words told her she wronged Jigar Ji, she couldn't bring herself to regret the moments she spent with Ahem Ji; Urmila Mami saw them as lustrous deeds, but Gopi knew it was in simple terms the engagement of true love.
Ahem could make out Gopi's silhouette standing in the lonesome night, it seemed like she was occupied with something from the past, although the night wasn't too cold, she was draped with a shawl around herself. He hooked his car up somewhere out of sight, before paying visit to her by foot. By the time he had arrived, Gopi was nowhere to be seen, and the window had been shut, he could only hope that in her remote state she forgot to meddle with the lock or else he would be doomed for the night.
As if there was a God that had answered his prayers the window hadn't been locked, encouraging this insecure safety procedure as his aide he carefully climbed inside being sure to not create any fuss. Gopi was scarce from the room and all that was in view was Panna tightly snuggled up in bed fast asleep. "Where is Gopi gone?" he whispered, while his eyes searched for a glimpse of her like a beggar did for that extra dime to make up a rounded sum of money. He noticed the thin vertical strip of light coming through the door and figured Gopi had probably gone to fetch something for herself, so he tried his level best to wait patiently. When at last he heard footsteps approaching the door.
He waited for her settle before revealing his presence, otherwise he would be sure to alarm her and cause some kind of midnight ruckus. He stood in a dark corner with one foot rested backward against the wall, and hands tucked into his pockets. After a few minutes he saw her going back beside the window and continue from where she left off it seemed, he watched her quietly wondering why she wasn't tired during such late hours of the night. She tugged onto her shawl as a small gust of wind rushed past her, disarraying her neatly parted hair all over her face, she tossed it in agitation without removing her hands from the warmth of her shawl, but her effort was ruined when another breeze blew past her. This time she decided to guide it away with her hands, but Ahem reached her in time to keep hold of her arms in place comfortably. Her back leaned onto his chest from relief of knowing who it was, her eyes closed as his hand tamed her silk-like tresses away from her face and over to one side, "Ahem Ji" she whispered. Ahem lowered his head and nestled his chin closer over her shoulder and pecked her cheek with a ghostly kiss that was barely felt by Gopi, "shh" he answered. He hugged her tighter, his broad arms hiding her completely, providing her all the warmth and comfort she needed for the night. They stayed quiet for almost five long minutes, until a tear drop fell onto Ahem's hand. "What's happened Gopi, is something wrong?" he asked immediately making her face him.
"No Ahem Ji, it's nothing like that, it's just that I was missing you so-" her words choked up and didn't allow her to finish what she had to say, instead she reached up and wrapped her arms around his neck tightly before she buried her head deeper into his neck and cried inconsolably. Ahem was taken off guard, he knew something had been wrong since the day had started but Gopi's tears told him things were a lot worse then wrong. Perhaps her Mama Ji told her of her Parents death anniversary, "did your Mama Ji call you today?" he asked in concern.
She only nodded her head to answer a no, "then what's the matter Gopi, why are you crying like this?" he begged to know, but she only held onto him tighter and cried, it was like she needed a shoulder to cry on, and she couldn't stop until she was done. "Gopi, please say something" he urged. Comfort was all that it seemed he could offer her right now, he held her close to him, and rubbed her back, she flinched as his palm went up her back; making Ahem wanting to ask more questions. "Please Gopi - tell me what's the matter?"
"I love you Ahem Ji, god knows I love you" she finally said like she was confessing, but remaining hidden deep in his comfort.
"I know you do Gopi, but your words are scaring me, somethings happening hasn't it - what, what is it?" he stumbled, taking in a deep breath, and keeping one hand over her head as his fingers massaged through her hair in anxiety.
"I don't know Ahem Ji, I don't know anything anymore, but all I know is that I love you, and I would never compromise your love for anything" she continued to sob.
"Gopi" he finally said firmly, "look at me," cupping her face he forced her to look up at him, her teary eyes hesitated before they met his, "tell me what the problem is, I can sort it out, I promise you Gopi, but don't leave me lingering in the dark - I beg you." She moved away from him this time, clearly showing her reluctance toward his plea, "has someone said something to you?"
"No" she squeaked out of sync. She gulped hard, closing her eyes tightly to shed off any further tears, she evoked courage through her silent prayers, "Ahem Ji, the truth is I don't have the authority to take decisions in my life, I never have and I never will" her voice shattered towards her last words, her courageous spirit hadn't lasted two minutes, but she tried to continue, "I just want you to know that the reason this relationship never worked is because of me, and not you - it was always me, and I know that what I'm going to ask you next may be too much, but if you can try to keep a memory of mine saved in an abandoned area of your heart somewhere, if you can do this then I'll consider that my love was worthy of you for a short time of my life, and that I was allowed to live a little dream."
"No!" his voice raised in instinctive response, "I could never do that! You - you don't understand!" he said. "It was never your fault, don't you get it, any of it! It was always me, I was the one who was always blind to not recognise your real worth - since the day of the Raas Leela I've been wondering where I went wrong, why has it taken me this long to realise you're the one I want."
"I don't understand Ahem Ji, how could you be blamed for anything?"
"Easily. If I ever told you that I know you from another lifetime already, would you ever believe me?" he asked in retreat.
"Yes I would" she answered clearly, "I would believe anything you said."
Ahem looked at her with sheer admiration, no man would need to look for reasons to love this woman that stood before him, the only reasons that would remain undiscovered were the ones of why she would love a man such as himself. "You trust me this much?!"
"Yes I do, even if you told me a lie, I would treat it no different from the truth, for I know that if you did so, it wouldn't be without reason. Nothing you could do can make me doubt your love Ahem Ji."
"Then why can't you trust me with what you know Gopi?"
"I can't," she replied, "because I don't know what my own future holds for me. All I do know is that I can ask you to remember the Gopi that once loved you, that's all!"
"Well then you waste your time, 'cause I can never forget you Gopi. If I can love someone then it's you and only you, if I can't have you then I refuse to love at all," he promised. "I won't let you leave me."
"I'm afraid you don't have a choice" she refused.
"And I'm afraid you don't neither" he further denied her refusal. "No reason can be strong enough to keep you away from me, I can guarantee you that."
"You can guarantee nothing, no one can take guarantee of compensating the same tears that fall into the ocean Ahem Ji, and it's just the same with us, you can never return me the droplets that fall from my eyes in your memory."
"Maybe you're right Gopi, but one thing I can assure is if it was those same two tears that you wanted, then I'd spend a lifetime looking for them."
Hearing Ahem's devotion to her, she was unable to stay away from him any longer, she leaped forward into his arms, trying to bind a lifetime of memories within in them.
