Part 35

"AAARRRgGGhhh." The car spiralled out my control into the adjoining lane. A huge lake reflected the turbulent weather as its waves lashed angrily against each other. The car seemed to make a straight go for it.

I tried handling the steering but power akin to hundreds of such car engines put together seemed to push it. The roaring sound of the wind angrily lashing at the surface of the waves, the mad rustling of the trees and of steel being scratched at the sides of the car made goosebumps erupt all over my skin. Nature's wrath was scary. How did I miss out the warning on Hurricane in my meandering thoughts?

Jumping out of the car would be the best way to save my life. But where would I go in a deserted highway in raging Hurricane? Soon it was going to rain heavily. The turbulent lake was approaching nearer with every passing second.

I tried opening the car door. It was jammed. The switches seem to have gone haywire in the hammering of the car. With another huge jerk the car was flimsily hanging on a huge boulder overlooking the lake. With the sun hidden due to bad weather ,it appeared as if the darkness of the sky was a mirror image of the gloomy lurking water.

Tears inadvertently came to my eyes. Was I going to die? The last time I had a near fatal accident, It was Mayank who had saved me from drowning. Perhaps all of Mayank leaving me and going afar was destiny's sign that we were never meant together in this life.

No. This can't happen. I can't let this happen. I hadn't properly wished him goodbye when he last left. There were still things left unsaid between us. I need to see him atleast once. To see his demure smile overlooking at me with his mischievous eyes alluring me. Too tell him how much I love him. And this love wouldn't die with my death but continue for eternity. Lumps formed in my throat.

I tried to inch towards the door again but the car jerked forwards in response. The front part was now touching the surface of that doomed lake. I went back to my original position hoping against hope that it won't drown in there.

"God please do what is right. If you think my time has come, I know nothing can save me now. But if only I could have seen Mayank and my family before I died then only it could be just."

With a huge bang in the back of my car, the winds pushed the car ahead. It touched the surface with an explosion . I lurched forwards and hit against the steering. Warm blood oozed out from my forehead.

The car headlights were useless in this black world I was drowning into. The lake inside was pitch –black. Maybe a resemblance of the world I was headed to. The strong, closed water tight glass windows prevented the water from seeping in. But it was a matter of time before I would die due to suffocation in the oxygen-air deprived container. I could feel the car sinking slowly with every passing minute into its treacherous depth.

I could almost see nothing now. Slowly tiny white lights started appearing as my breathlessness increased . I was wet with intense perspiration out of suffocation. Flashbacks of my life began to playout before me.

A half-eaten apple was lying hidden under the bed while a little girl was running around the kitchen chased by her mother. A crying 10 year old being given strong words of wisdom from her father when she lost her school debate competition, a bespectacled boy throwing cushions on her sister who retaliated the same, a proud girl going up to receiver her college graduation degree, a jealous girl looking when Mayank and Bells kissed, a wishfully happy girl as she saw Dia & Ian exchange wedding rings, a desperate girl banging her head on a tree, a wonderstruck girl being given a purple orchid in the park. Do you trust me? Mayank's words from that night in the inn echoed in my ears.It was getting brighter. Brighter for me to make out anything now. Was this the end?

A roaring sound like of glass shattering came to my ears but I couldn't make out if it was in my head or for real. Intangible coldness began to drench me as liquid surrounded me. I was shivering badly. Was someone shouting my name?

Something slimy went around my waist and tried to pull me against gravity. It was strong, this slimy creature. I felt myself rising against the volume of water but this was all I could remember before my complete blackout as water entered my nostrils.

"Nupur!!NUPUR! Are you alright?"

Something strong was hitting me hard on the stomach repeatedly. The unwanted water inside rushed out. My nostrils dilated as it felt air. I felt something sappy mover my lips making a giddy movement. The air seemed to enter through it unclogging my insides. Wait, this feeling was similar. Last time I felt such when Mayank had saved me from drowning. Was It him again? I needed to see him. With all the strength I could gather I raised my eye-lids.

"Nupur!!!Thank God YOU ARE ALIVE!"

The blur got clearer as I figured out his wet, dripping face with those familiar eyes crying in happiness. " May..."I tried opening my mouth but was cut-short by his hair entering it as he bent over to hug me.

"Are you alright Nupur?" He raise my head in his lap.

"Mayank...you..." I could only blink tears.

"Ssshhh...It's alright now." His fingers gently wept away my rolling tears.

"Stay steady. Okay?" He picked me up in his arms.

"Mayank are you mad? Can't you feel the wind hamming? It's a Hurricane for god's sake .Don't drive!"

"Mad? Yes. But not insane than a girl who left for a ride in a highway with her cell behind in the flat out to enjoy a hurricane."

"What's the use? You never called!"

"We'll fight later after we successfully survive that is. I have come in a fire-brigade tanker. Borrowed it. Thought it might be strong enough for the winds."

"You are nuts!"

"You see it's still tough to usurp a fully loaded water tanker. Huh? Now hold me tight."

I clutched tightly around his shoulders burying my face in his chest as he swiftly carried me inside the tanker.

"Water, I need some water."

"Here you go." He made me drink from a water-bottle as I greedily gulped it down."Thank you"

"Not to mention."

"You shouldn't have come Mayank."

"What? And let you die?"

"That's not the point. You don't have to go after your beloved in a god forsaken Hurricane, risking yourself in a tanker, exposing yourself out in the wind and then jump into a deep lake and rescue your girlfriend from a sinking car. You ain't a superhero!" I jabbed a finger at his chest.

"Yes I don't have to. But I need to. Not because I am any superhero but because I love you."

"I don't want you to risk death even it's for my sake."

"There wouldn't be anything left for me to live then without you."

"Really? Then we are dying as it is. We'll never make out of here in this Hurricane alive."

"Yes we will. You'll see a chopper soon when the wind subsides .Aman is with the security forces. They'll be tracking us with this GPRS device I have placed in the tanker. I left to search for you in this highway after Dia told me. I tried calling you but no response. I still don't get why in the world , you didn't pay heed to an Hurricane warning? How can someone be so careless??"

"I was lost in just some more important matters."I shrugged.

"What? Have you lost it?"

"What was a girl supposed to do when her boyfriend lost it? Not calling her even once since he left? Would she rather not think he cared less to let her die?" Tears flooded my eyes.

"Nupur...you know that's not true."

"I know Mayank. I know," I hugged him tightly and wept. "It was just lonely without you all the time."

"Where were you? "

"In India."

"What?" I broke apart and looked up.

"I had gone to India to bring your parents and brother to meet you on this New Year. This was to be a surprise for you. We got stranded in the bad weather over the Atlantic in London. So we had to make round trip across the West Coast which took time. When we reached your flat you weren't there. Your family got worried. I left them there and started to search you. The first person I called was Dia."

"Mayank...your surprise just gave me a heartattack. Stop loving me so much. No need for you to go out of the way and bring my family here for me. Just behave like a normal boyfriend for once."

"Ahh...I know I am the best. You are just so lucky to have me." He winked.

"You ass!"I tried playfully to strangle him.

"OH..Okay there. Even I am so lucky to have you.But seriously I know you would have felt incomplete celebrating this New Year without your family."

"Now you too is a part of it. Words are failing me how to thank you on this Mayank."

"Well who needs words?"

"Mayank!"

"I never knew you'd miss me this much. Like trying to die in my misery...okay that was too much."

"Mayank!...I...I didn't...actually just a little...you know."

"I know. I know it's wonderful to have some care for you so much. Someone who can't live without you. Someone with whom you can't live without. Well I have a plan to put an end to all of this."

"Really?" I eyed him suspiciously.

"Yup. Actually I have another surprise waiting for you." My jaw dropped. It was coming true. The effing dream was coming true.

"It's a yes!" I jumped at my seat."

"What?...you knew...how come?...i..." he looked flabbergasted.

"Just make me wear it you dolt!"

"Fine. Fine. Don't get so jumpy." He knelt in the small cabin of the fire-brigade tanker with the rains crashing down with the winds outside. There were no mountain or sunsets or beautiful flowers. But reality is infinite times better than dreams. He pulled out a diamond ring.

"Will you Miss Nupur Saxena, marry me?" I nodded a big yes as joyful tears choked my throat. He slid the ring up my finger.

"I love you."

"I love you."

We laughed as we proclaimed our love simultaneously. He leaned in further to kiss me. His warm lips capturing mine with his tongue lashing it's fiery dance inside as I groaned in delight.

"Mayank!" I couldn't bear it anymore. The pain relieved a little as I moaned his name. I dug my nails hard into his back as he slithered over my body.

He left a trail of butterfly kisses over my navel as I writhed on the bed due to giddiness.

"Mayank" he slithered slowly upwards nibbling over the crest of my chest and bit the delicate flesh near my collarbone. I dug harder in his back.

"I love when you say my name like this." He hushed in my ears gently biting my ear-lobe.

"Its time to get up Mayank...Mayank..."

"SSShhh...,..." he stopped me mid-way as he entered his tongue inside and started to suck the air inside making me breathless. He again went down to lay a trail of butterfly kisses on my throat.

"Mayank...get up. We have to wake them!"

"Always a spoilsport." Finally he raised his head.

"Hahaaa...stop sulking like a baby Mr. Sharma. You had your day."

" 'Twas night Mam. Did I made yours too Mr Sharma?"he winked.

I blushed a deep shade of crimson as I pushed him off and started to wear my clothes.

"Hey I need my answer Mrs. Sharma!"

"Come and catch me then." I tightened my night-robe and made a dash for the door.

"Got you!" He triumphantly laid his arms across my waist."

"Mommy open the door. I need new crayons."

I turned the knob opening the door as Mayank's fingers instantly slid from my waist. A five year old- hazel eyed girl with dark brown hair stared at us. He lifted her in his arms."Good morning sweetheart."

"Good monning Daddyyy...Goood monningg Mommy..." she sang.

"Morning angel." I kissed her on the cheek. Mayank put forward his cheek too but I looked away. He made a sorry face towards Ria who laughed "Mommy kiss daddy too."

"Trust you Mayank to teach children wrong things." I said as I pecked him.

"What? Now what I did?"

"Ria I bought those crayons yesterday. Tanu might have it with her. Go ask your sister. Where is she now? Still asleep?"

"No . She's playing with granny in the lawn. Daddy put me down. Have to get my crayons." She pouted.

He put her down." Run away princess."

"Oh no...Mom's already on the lawn and I haven't yet got her breakfast ready. It's all your fault Mayank!"

"Cummon Nupur. Mom can wait a little."

"What does she think of her daughter-in-law getting up this late?

"That her son is irresistible."

"Mayank!!"

"What ?alright then. People are so ungrateful."

"Really? What should I give you credit for?"

"For helping you in our twins. What with a spoilsport like you it would have taken eons."

"You are so dead."

"That's right. I am in heaven with you."

He bent to capture my furious mouth with his lips melting me.
