Does Bwood know how to make a SCREWBALL COMEDY?!

I am not talking about the David Dhawan comedies or Akshay Kumar's last failure! In fact, a screwball comedy developed in 1930's Hollywood and is described as "fast-paced intellectual humor, ludicrous situations, escapist themes, and plot lines involving courtship and marriage" according to wikipedia. 😉 Does Karan Johar's upcoming film with Kareena and Imran classify as a perfect example of a screwball comedy?! I think it does. We all know Karan Johar is not the best filmmaker, but Kareena makes it look like so much fun with her vibrance and pure energy! Not many actresses can act well in a screwball comedy except perhaps Kareena in the present day! Other actresses make it look horrible. What about actors? Akshay cannot do a screwball comedy well anymore, his movies are not taken seriously. I think Tanu Weds Manu was a great example with Madhavan delivering an highly acclaimed and underrated performance. And Kangana did a good job, but it is very rare to find her in such roles. I don't think the Khans are capable of doing a screwball comedy, except perhaps Aamir. But, mostly his films have been serious and not really in the screwball comedy genre!
Do you think Bollywood can make a screwball comedy well? Please share your thoughts.

I thought gol maal series was as screwball as you could get and hillarious. I truly enjoy them , and can't wait till the next.
Akhay's Singh is King was another great one with entertainment, and also did not put punjabis in a bad light.
Salman's Ready truly entertaining.

"Comedy" is a very pathetic genre in Bollywood right now. Pathetic because of the way it has been done repeatedly. So, i don't really see a screwball comedy coming our way anytime soon. Forget screwball...when have we recently seen an overly hilarious comedy? What's the closest to that we've seen recently? Dehli Belly?...Yeah, we have a long way to go.

Bollywood sucks! 🤢 Can't they even do a comedy well?!!! 😕 To busy with the skin show, item numbers, and remaking southern flicks!

There ARE a few.
They just never ever get popular...

Bheja Fry, I THINK, qualified as a screwball, and yeah it got its due and all that but it was copied.. so.. fail. ahaha

I think Raat Gayi Baat Gayi also fits the bill, but obviously it had no chance at getting popular.

Ek Chaalis Ki Last Local also contains the the elements that make up the definition of screwball...

but these types of movies really don't go far. They need heavy as fuuudge marketing, and even THAT works against them, as in the case, in my opinion, of Delhi Belly. Amir Khan promoted that movie to its last wits, which ended up putting lots of people off, making them feel like the approach was maha wannabe...

Bollywood, IMO has the capacity, AND the talent to create good screwball comedies. I feel that people like Anurag Kashyap, Dibaker Banerjee, and even Saurabh Shukla have it in them to create good stuff.. its just the matter of our lovely audiences to start appreciating a bit and take a small vacation from bullshit that passes off as comedy these days

Very well-said Rachna! 👏 Anurag Kashyap, Dibaker Banerjee, and Saurabh Shukla are not even big commercial directors. It is a shame they can't get a big banner and do something substantial to prove that there can be a commercial screwball comedy which everyone can lap up! I don't even consider Jab We Met or Ek Aur Ek Main Tuu to be screwball, they were just ordinary movies with to much romance and typical Indian drama! The audiences need to stop looking to item numbers and Salman's lame-brain movies for their entertainment. I don't see it happening in the next few years! 😕

^ there's no point in even trying to be hopeful right now..
I mean, come on.. Bodyguard was last year's highest grosser 👏

I think some production companies, like UTV Hats off,and even, to a smaaall teeny extent, Excel Productions, can accommodate good scripts.
UTV has been the most convincing, and least disappointing production house in the last few years... surely, they don't produce mega blockbusters very often, but their stories have been great. They allow room for experimentation.. I have hopes in that one.

Comedy is hard to do...granted. We have capable actors, actresses, directors, producers...granted. Making movies is a business so one has to be concerned about box office and so on...granted. BUT our industry has gotten SO bad about "100 crore" and oh so concerned about box-office status and who is on top and what not that its just ridiculous. Everyone spends more energy on promoting a movie than actually making a good movie to promote. Such a shame. Not just comedy...Bollywood rarely comes out with a well done movie. Rarely. Anyways...like i said, we have a LONGGG way to go.

EDITED: Gaurav, im saying this because you mentioned Karan Johar's movie. I doubt he can do something like that right now.
