Generation 5:A new chapter in Yrkkh
The realisation that they were married nearly brought Khushi to her knees. But she wasn't even allowed that moment of weakness. In the next moment, Khushi was pulled by Arnav in the direction of his parked car.
It took everything in her to stay on her feet as stumble down the steps, Arnav's momentum a blessing and a curse, stopping her from falling but keeping her chained to him physically.
"Arn-Arnav-ji", it was a struggle for her to get the words out, but she had to push past her mental turmoil and try to make him listen, if not to hear her explanation than at least to take care of his injury. "Arnav-ji, you need to see to your arm".
He ignored her attempts to get through to him.
"Dev, make sure He's secured and get Him into the car, if he escapes before we get to the police station, I'll have your head. Take the pundit with you". He threw the command over his shoulder without looking back.
They reached the car in seconds. Arnav let go of her arm and yanked open the door with violence which belied his calm exterior.
"Get in". The full force of his angry gaze turned on her. It was like he had a new plateau of fury, one that asked her to utter another word and see what it would unleash.
She took the path of least resistance and slid into the passenger seat as Arnav made his way around to the driver's side.
Khushi struggled with the seat belt as he slid into the driver's side, not giving her a glance while she struggled with the mental contraption.
Arnav took the belt in hand and fixed it, unconscious of what he was doing before it was done.
In an outburst of aggression, he hit the steering wheel in frustration, "Damn it". Why had he done it? He wanted to ignore she was there, ignore the picture she painted, even rumpled she looked beautiful
He tried to ignore his moment of weakness and pull himself together. Without looking at her, he turned on the ignition, put the car in gear and drove like a bat out of hell, knowing Dev would follow his orders to the letter.
Khushi stayed completely still, instinctively knowing he was hanging onto his control by a thread. She tried not to show it but his instinctive kindness towards her warmed her heart. But hope grew unchecked inside her and the old Khushi, the one who spoke her mind, was clinging to one thought.
Maybe she could reach him after all.
As the car rushed by one hospital and then another, Khushi couldn't stay silent any longer. But first she had to make sure he was seen to,
"Arnav-ji, you need to get your wound checked, you might need stitches." And then I will make you listen to me, you Laat Governor!
Slowly, Khushi's willpower was coming back to her. She wouldn't let what happened to her bring her to her knees. She was a victim in all this but that didn't mean she had to act like one. She would prove her innocence and hopefully move forward from the events of this night.
Arnav was still willfully ignoring her and showed no sign of hearing what she had said. She opened her mouth to try again, when they pulled up in front of her house.
Without a backward glance, Arnav unbuckled his belt, opened his door, got out of his driver seat and made his way over to her side of the car.
As she inched open the door, it was wrenched out of her grasp. She couldn't see her Arnav's face in the dark but he stood silent as a statue. When she didn't move he made a sound of impatience.
"Get out. Damn it!" It was a second time he had sworn, normally she would have had something to say about that but she let it go. Instead scrambled out of the car and stood next to him in the darkness.
He made another impatient sound, sharply making a gesture to her to make a move towards her home; she did so, him following closely behind. She noted that he hadn't touched her since getting into the car; it was if he was intentionally avoiding doing so.
Once they had reached the front door, he gave it an angry knock. Almost immediately, the door opened and her Bua's worried face came into view.
Bua's expression quickly turned into one of shock as the pair walked in. Khushi's beautiful purple sari was dirty and ripped, and her hair had fallen into disarray during her ordeal whereas Arnav had lost his jacket at some point and his shirt sleeve was saturated in his blood.
"Hai Khushi, where have you been? yeah kya hai?!" (What is this?)
Before either of them could say a thing, Bua 's sharp gaze flitted from Khushi's filled parting to the necklace that hung around her neck.
"Khushi?! Why is your maang filled? Why do you have a mangalsutra around your neck?" The shock had obviously stopped her Bua's mind from jumping to the obvious conclusion.
The quick questions jolted Khushi; she had almost forgotten the most important result of this ill-fated evening. She and Arnav were married. She was his 'wife' and he her 'husband'. They were pati and patni. Khushi couldn't get her head around that fact.
And there was still the mystery of why had he married her in the first place.
"Arrey, Shanka Devi, What have you done?!" Bua gripped her arm and gave her a shake to bring her back to her senses.
Arnav had had enough of the drama and stepped in.
"We're married", apparently he had to state the obvious for her.
"Kya?! But you're engaged to marry Shyam-babua. How could you bring shame to this family? How could you run off and get married to him?" Bua-ji shrieked, making her feelings about Arnav evident. But Arnav ignored it. No, what was important was that apparently her family was in on her plan all along and he would make sure they would pay for it.
Her supposed engagement to that psycho was news to Khushi; how far had he spread his poison?
"What are you saying Bua-ji. I was never engaged to Shyam-ji." Khushi's revulsion showed in her voice but her simple refusal lit a fire in Arnav. He couldn't stand to hear another lie from those pretty lips.
"Enough!!" He wanted to get this over and done with.
With that he moved passed Bua-ji and headed towards Khushi's shared room. Leaving Bua-ji behind, whose mouth hung open in, a side effect of the disbelief of him speaking to her, Indira, in that way.
"Come with me." He ordered Khushi to follow him.
Out of confusion Khushi did as she was told. Where had her resolve to challenge him gone? She could only blame her silence on wanting to find out what this was leading to.
As he closed the door behind her and turned to face the room, Khushi felt a feeling of foreboding settling on her. She knew whatever was coming was not something to look forward to.
"Listen to this once because I am not going to repeat myself." Khushi braced herself for what, she could only guess from his expression, was the inevitable blow.
"Don't think for a moment you've hit the jackpot. This marriage is in name only. And I will never accept you as my wife". As the blows came one after, Khushi was staggered. So that was the reason, he had chosen this method to show her aukad and her home was the venue he had chosen to show it. Even the slight hope of him making a go of this marriage flttered away from Khushi.
He took a step closer and leaned down to utter his lethal words.
"Somewhere in that scheming heart of yours, you must believe in your Devi Mayya. The vows you took tonight were before your God. Don't think to break them since its wrath is not the only one you'll have to deal with. I have no room in my life for a wife, or a liar and cheat like you, but don't think I won't be keeping an eye on you, Mrs Raizada."
With relish he landed the last blow, the ASR of old had done his job well. With his revenge complete, he quickly left the room and the house behind. He did so without a backward glance at the devastation he had left behind.
Ok, yes! I'm sorry I'm dragging the angst but I have a plan so stick with me. 😆
