Bollywood maange more!

If 2011 belonged to remakes, then 2012 is most likely to belong to sequels. From comedies to action flicks, every film worth its money in Bollywood seems to have been bitten by the sequel bug as the year will have as many as 22 sequels either ready to release or on the floor. And while some of these are installments of recent flicks, there are others whose original films had hit the marquee a few years back.

But this surge hardly comes as a surprise to industrywallahs, who explain the reasons behind it. "Creating a franchisee for a hit film is the best bet in these times. Right now there's a lot of flutter in the industry with the high money in circulation. So, the moment you know you have the financial backing secured, instead of waiting for a fresh new concept, it's best to work on a sequel.

Besides, sequels of films like Dhoom, Golmaal... all have done well in the past, so it's encouraging for other filmmakers too," says trade analyst Taran Adarsh.

Filmmaker Sanjay Gupta however feels that some films genuinely lend themselves to being followed up as a sequel. "It does help when the basic premise is set already. So it's taking off from where you'd left the last time instead of ground zero again," says Gupta. But filmmaker Milan Luthria is quick to point out that it should not be mistaken as the filmmakers having it easy though.

"It may seem like the easier way out, but the fact is that since the expectations are high if you make a sequel to a hit, the pressure is high too on the filmmaker to deliver," adds Luthria.

Actor Tusshar Kapoor, who's been a part of the hit Golmaal series, says that as far as actors are concerned, it definitely works in their favour. "The audience loves the character so much that they want to see more of them, which is definitely a compliment, but also encouraging for the actor to keep doing better and equally challenging," he says.

Taran highlights that it's easier to make sequels of comedies and action flicks as compared to the other genre. "They are both quite a favourite when it comes to making sequels as they are easy to take up from where they left. That's why it's now not uncommon for film endings to already announce the next installment coming up, while in some films it's easy to see that a sequel can easily be made," says Taran.

Yesteryear Bollywood queens ready with for a comeback this year

Age no bar, marital status no bar and kids no bar either. Seems like this is what senior B-Town actresses are set to prove in the coming year, as the once reigning queens of the 80s and 90s are all set to romance the big screens once again. The coming year will witness a deluge of these actresses make a comeback to the silver screen. And even the ones who've attempted a comeback of sorts earlier are readying for another shot at films. And it's not the mother-sister kind of roles that these ladies are settling for, instead it's nothing less than the lead roles for these actresses.

Sridevi is currently shooting for English Vinglish, while Karisma Kapoor is busy with Dangerous Ishq. Buzz is that Madhuri Dixit-Nene is being wooed for the sequel of Ishqiya. Shilpa Shirodkar too is said to be knocking on Bollywood doors. Raveena Tandon who made a comeback of sorts early this year, is readying for another round of films more suited to her new svelte figure.

While industrywallahs give them a thumbs up, they admit that the reception to their comebacks by the audience will depend on the kind of roles they come back with. "There's no doubt that they are a super-talented bunch and there's a high curiosity and interest in their comebacks, but ultimately how they fare at the BO will depend on the roles and the film in totatilty," says trade analyst Taran Adarsh.

Trade analyst Bharti Pradhan agrees. "They are all some of the best performers of their times, and they are looking in their best forms too, so why not?" she quips. "It's not aping the Hollywood here, but a natural and gradual progression, and a good performance is what matters, not the marital status or age of the actor," she adds.

A senior distributor adds that the actresses have all known to be complete performers, but they will have to be careful in the roles they select. "They were high on glam, were good dancers, but were known for their acting prowess too and by the time they called it quits, temporarily, they had gravitated towards more serious kind of roles. So, in those kind of performance-oriented roles, I'm sure they would be loved and accepted. If they can pull off hot numbers then that's an added," says the veteran insider.
Raveena however feels that it's unfair to call it a comeback.

"Where had we gone to call it a comeback. We had only taken a small break," she insists. Comeback or not, talking about what lures them back to Tinsel Town, Madhuri says that it all depends on getting a role that would make you want to sign on the dotted line. "Acting has always been a passion, so it's only about prioritising things," explains Madhuri.

Optimistic about the response they will garner at the BO, actor Kareena Kapoor feels that the fans will definitely be excited about seeing their favourites on screen again. "We have grown up watching and loving their movies. So, of course, it's exciting to see them set the screen on fire again," says the current Bollywood hottie.

Get set for comedy, thrillers in 2012

So, we are into 2012. Get ready for a dose of Bollywood comedy and thrillers with an interesting mix of movies like "Players", "Agneepath", "Ek Main Aur Ekk Tu", "Jodi Breakers" and "Agent Vinod".

The first big release of year 2012 is Abbas-Mustan's multi-starrer action-thriller "Players", starring Abhishek Bachchan, Sonam Kapoor, Bipasha Basu, Neil Nitin Mukesh, Bobby Deol and Sikander Kher. The actors are extensively promoting the film.

The film has already created a lot of buzz for its action sequences and ultra-glam avatar of the leading ladies Bipasha and Sonam. The film boasts of action and thrills galore.

This will be followed by horror film "Ghost", which marks the comeback of actor Shiney Ahuja. Shiney's movie career hit a rough patch when he was convicted by a Mumbai fast track court of raping his domestic help two years ago. The actor has challenged the sentence in the Bombay High Court and is currently out on bail.

"Ghost" will release alongside Hriday Shetty's "Chaalis Chauraasi", a crime-humour offering, starring Kay Kay Menon, Naseeruddin Shah, Ravi Kishan and Atul Kulkarni.

This year will see two Karan Johar flicks - "Agneepath" and "Ek Main Aur Ekk Tu" - hitting theatres.

A remake of the 1990 film, "Agneepath" sees Hrithik Roshan stepping into the shoes of Amitabh Bachchan as Vijay Dinanath Chauhan alongside Sanjay Dutt who plays baddie Kancha Cheena. Set for a Jan 26 Republic Day release, it also features Priyanka Chopra.

Romantic comedy "Ek Main Aur Ekk Tu", starring Imran Khan and Kareena Kapoor, will release in February.

The new year will be high on comedy with Akshaye Khanna's "Gali Gali Chor Hai", Riteish Deshmukh-Genelia D'Souza-starrer "Tere Naal Love Ho Gaya", Bipasha-Madhavan's "Jodi Breakers", Sajid Khan's "Housefull 2", Sachin Yardi's "Kyaa Super Kool Hain Hum", Sameer Sharma's "Luv Shuv Tey Chicken Khurana" and Rohit Shettty's "Bol Bachchan" scheduled to release.

Vishal Bhardwaj's comedy "Matru Ki Bijli Ka Mandola", set in a rustic Rajasthani backdrop, goes on the floors in February and is slated for release later in 2012. It stars Imran Khan and Anushka Sharma.

Actress Sonakshi Sinha once again hopes to make it big with "Joker", "Son of Sardar", "Dabangg 2" and "Lootera". While the "Dabangg" sequel reunites her with Salman Khan, she will be seen opposite Akshay Kumar in "Joker". "Son of Sardar" and "Lootera" have Ajay Devgn and Ranveer Singh as her co-stars respectively.

Audiences would be introduced this year to a new genre of zombie-comedy with Ekta Kapoor's "Rock The Shaadi", starring Abhay Deol.

Those looking for thrills and action wouldn't be disappointed either.

Apart from "Players", "Agent Vinod", "Blood Money", "Tezz" and "Jannat 2", Aamir Khan-starrer "Talaash", Akshay Kumar's "Rowdy Rathore" and "Race 2" are lined up for release.

After a bold performance in "The Dirty Picture", Vidya Balan will return with the thriller "Kahaani", a story of a pregnant woman in search of her missing husband.

After three back-to-back hits with "Wanted", "Dabangg" and "Bodyguard", Salman Khan will once again attempt to strike gold with Kabir Khan's romantic thriller "Ek Tha Tiger".

"Rockstar" Ranbir Kapoor's next big release "Barfee", directed by Anurag Basu, will see him playing a deaf individual, while Priyanka Chopra will esssay a mentally challenged girl. It is a murder mystery.

Movie biopics "Paan Singh Tomar" starring Irrfan Khan, and Rakyesh Omprakash Mehra's "Bhaag Milkha Bhaag", with Farhan Akhtar in the lead, would also release this year.

Two of the most popular actresses are making a comeback this year.

Sridevi will return to the big screen after 15 years with Gauri Shinde's "English Vinglish", which is is produced by Balki of "Paa" fame. Karisma Kapur also makes her acting comeback with Vikram Bhatt's horror film "Dangerous Ishq".

Madhur Bhandarker's ambitious project "Heroine" starring Kareena Kapoor will see the light of the day in 2012. Sharman Joshi's first solo project "Ferrari Ki Sawaari" and Prateik's "Ekk Deewana Tha" will also release this year.

^^^BW has run out of ideas. Thats why we have sequels of average/flop films too like Jannat, Shootout At Wadala, Shabri. On the other hand I guess people like the Bhatts, Sunny Deol are trying to find a footing back with their old hits.

What lies beyond the grand New Year bash in Bollywood? Well, this could be the industry's most 'hatke' year, (to borrow a Bollywoodism!) filled as it is with some of the most derring-do performances and the most controversial subjects. It has the thrills of new pairings on-screen and some old friendships being rekindled. Expect some shocking makeovers and some tantalising biopics. harshikaa udasi does a quick scan of what's on the roster.

January

It's a racy start to the new year with the duo in white, Abbas-Mustan, bringing the multi-starrer Players (January 6) to screens. The film bears the Abbas-Mustan stamp with super stunts, a-thrill-a-minute plot and 'hot' actors, including the likes of Abhishek Bachchan, Sonam Kapoor, Bipasha Basu, Neil Nitin Mukesh and Bobby Deol.

Hriday Shetty's Chaalis Chauraasi (January 13) is hitting high decibels mainly because of its strong cast-quartet of Naseeruddin Shah, Kay Kay Menon, Atul Kulkarni and Ravi Kishan. The plot is interesting with a police van being the centre piece and the genre is being described as crime comedy.

But the biggest film in the inaugural month is Agneepath where Dharma Productions brings Hrithik Roshan in the angry young man's avatar as Vijay Dinanath Chauhan of the 1990 film of the same name. Karan Johar has entrusted newbie Karan Malhotra with the direction of this one. Priyanka Chopra, Rishi Kapoor and Sanjay Dutt join Hrithik in the film. And if you were wondering about 'Chikni Chameli,' the song which has become bigger than the film now, Katrina has only that item number!

February

A common man's film against corruption, here's one that will warm the cockles of your heart. Gali Gali Chor Hai (February 3), starring Akshaye Khanna, Shriya Saran and Mugdha Godse, comes from director Rumi Jaffrey.

It is followed by Ek Main Aur Ekk Tu (February 10), which has the unusual pair of Imran Khan and Kareena Kapoor, from the Dharma Productions banner to set the tone right at the outset. The story of two diametrically opposite people who get married in a tipsy state and want to annul their marriage may be just what the audiences want around Valentine's Day. For Karan Johar, this is yet another debutant director — Shakun Batra.

Gautham Menon's Ekk Deewana Tha (February 17), starring Prateik and Amy Jackson, is a remake of the director's own Tamil film, Vinnaithaandi Varuvaayaa.

Lovebirds Genelia D'Souza and Riteish Deshmukh make a long-awaited screen appearance with their romantic Tere Naal Love Ho Gaya (February 17).

The month is a blockbuster one, considering even Saif's home production, starring him and Bebo, Agent Vinod, might see a release too with their wedding reportedly around the same time.

Madhavan and Bipasha Basu's Jodi Breakers (February 24) features the duo as the ultimate relationship dissolvers till Cupid strikes them!

Pakistani actor Ali Zafar's next film London Paris New York might also be a February release.

March

Vidya Balan is expected to deliver another power-packed performance in Sujoy Ghosh's Kahaani.

Kunal Khemu will play the nave yet ambitious protagonist in Mahesh Bhatt's survival thriller Blood Money (March 23).

Priyadarshan's action thriller Tezz (March 23) sees Ajay Devgn and Anil Kapoor come together to rev up the mood.

April

Sajid Khan's multi-starrer comedy Housefull 2 (Akshay Kumar, John Abraham, Riteish Deshmukh, Shreyas Talpade, Asin, Zarine Khan, Jacqueline Fernandez, Shazahn Padamsee, Rishi Kapoor, Randhir Kapoor and Mithun Chakraborty) hits the screens on April 5.

There's more to tickle your funny bone with Tusshar Kapoor and Riteish Deshmukh's Kyaa Super Kool Hain Hum (April 6) and Bitto Boss (April 20), starring Pulkit Samrat and Amita Pathak, coming from the makers of last year's quiet hit Pyaar Ka Punchnama.

Vidhu Vinod Chopra's production will bring its first film after 3 IdiotsFerrari Ki Sawaari (April 27) by Raju Hirani's protg, Rajesh Mapuskar.

The month will end with Emraan Hashmi's return in Jannat 2.

May

A gourmet comedy, Luv Shuv Tey Chicken Khurana, starring Kunal Kapoor, will tantalise your taste buds this summer.

YashRaj Films will have their first release of the year, Ishaqzaade, starring youngsters Arjun Kapoor and Parineeti Chopra. Expect to see a war of the clans in small town India and love arising from there. This will now be Arjun's launch pad as his 2011 release Virus Diwan has been reportedly put on the backburner.

June

With this month, Bollywood gets into overdrive. Aamir Khan gets back in full form with two leading ladies by his side — Kareena Kapoor and Rani Mukherji — in Reema Kagti's thriller Talaash. Obviously the film is laden with expectations as the Farhan Akhtar-Ritesh Sidhwani-Aamir Khan trio is getting back together after a decade.

Akshay Kumar too gets back in full action mode with Rowdy Rathore (remake of the superhit Telugu film Vikramarkudu which was also remade in Tamil as Siruthai, another superhit) under Prabhudeva's tutelage. It shows off the Akshay-Sonakshi Sinha pairing for the first time.

Karisma Kapoor's comeback vehicle, horror film Dangerous Ishq, might also be released.

Meanwhile, Preity Zinta will release the first movie under her home banner PZNZ Media — Ishkq in Paris, starring herself and French actress Isabelle Adjani.

July

Starring the challenger to the superstars — Ranbir Kapoor — Barfii is the story of a boy who can neither speak nor hear but who creates an impression wherever he goes. Being described as a Chalu Chaplin movie, Barfii is supposed to be not just Ranbir's most difficult role but also his co-star Priyanka Chopra's most challenging one as she plays a mentally retarded person. Ileana D'Cruz is also part of the film.

Bol Bachchan (July 6) by Rohit Shetty will also be a July release. While Ajay Devgn, Abhishek Bachchan, Asin and Prachi Desai share screen space in this one, not much is known about the film.

August

Salman Khan and Katrina Kaif decide to greenlight a YashRaj project, Salman's first ever with the banner. Directed by Kabir Khan, Ek Tha Tiger will be a romantic thriller.

This month will also see the release of Joker 3D (August 30), featuring Akshay Kumar and Sonakshi Sinha (for the second time this year). The story of a small town that is supposedly invaded by aliens is being directed by Shirish Kunder who says this one is a cool alien comedy. Add to it the 3D factor!

Raaz 3 (August 31) with Emraan Hashmi, Jacqueline Fernandez and Bipasha Basu ends the month.

September

There is only one film that stands out this month and that is Madhur Bhandarkar's Heroine. Kareena Kapoor is giving it her all and the director too is out to prove himself after being 'abandoned' by Aishwarya Rai Bachchan. Madhur has confessed it is his biggest film till date and that it will let people in on life behind the glamour with all its dirty secrets!

November

Come November and Shah Rukh Khan is back with his favourite director — veteran Yash Chopra. Expect delicious romantic fare with SRK and Katrina appearing on screen together for the first time. Anushka Sharma will also be romanced by the King Khan.

Abbas-Mustan are ready to close the year with another film — Race 2 (November 30) starring Saif Ali Khan, John Abraham, Deepika Padukone, Jacqueline Fernandez, Anil Kapoor and Ameesha Patel. The formula remains the same — fast cars, mind-boggling stunts and sensational skin show.

Ajay Devgn Ffilms are ready with their next by November — Son of Sardar (November 30) with Ajay himself in the lead and Sonakshi (yet again!) paired with him. The film is reportedly a remake of Telugu super hit Maryada Ramanna.

December

Sonakshi's fourth film in 2012 and her second with mentor Salman Khan, Dabbang 2, will be ready for release by Christmas.

Talking points

Sridevi is making a comeback after 15 years with R Balki's wife Gauri Shinde's English Vinglish (Summer of 2012). Balki is producing the film.

Vikramditya Motwane (director of the much-acclaimed Udaan) is back with Lootera, a stylised film set in the 1950s, produced by Balaji Motion Pictures and Phantom. It features Ranveer Singh and Sonakshi Sinha and is Ranveer's first film outside of YashRaj. It is also Sonakshi's fifth film this year.

Balaji's Rock The Shaadi starring Abhay Deol and Genelia D'Souza and directed by Navdeep Singh (Manorma Six Feet Under) is already making news for being a zombie movie. Earlier titled Shaadi of the Dead, the morbid name was later changed to a Punjabi one that's more fun!

Vishal Bhardwaj's Maatru Ki Bijli Ka Mandola will see Imran Khan's complete makeover. He is undergoing physical training too to look the part. The film is a rustic Rajasthani humorous film. Anushka Sharma pairs with Imran for this one.

Rakyesh Omprakash Mehra's official biopic of Milkha Singh called Bhaag Milkha Bhaag will star Farhan Akhtar who is undergoing an extensive training of six months and will start shooting in March.

Once Upon a Time in Mumbaai 2 with Akshay Kumar will also see a 2012 release.

Ram Gopal Vama's Department starring Amitabh Bachchan, Sanjay Dutt, Rana Daggubati and Anjana Sukhani might be the only Big B release this year.

David Dhawan's remake of the 1981 film Chashme Buddoor will star Ali Zafar and Siddharth.

Casanova John Abraham strikes in 2012 with I Me Aur Main. His co-stars include Chitrangada Singh, Prachi Desai and Zarina Wahab.

John's own production banner JA Entertainment will release Vicky Donor directed by Shoojit Sarcar. A film in which he will not act though.

Boman Irani will team up with Farah Khan to act (yes, you heard it) in the film titled Shirin Farhad to be produced by Sanjay Leela Bhansali and directed by his sister Bela.
