Part 6
His hands softly touched her back to do up her buttons, a shudder passed through her making her realize the intensity of her want. As she turned and looked into his eyes she realized she had not forgotten him one iota, he was as ingrained into her being as a bee's sense of flower, nectar for the birds, seeds for the soil. He was the consciousness of her mind. The sprit to her soul.
When she tried to utter a word he placed his hand on her mouth stopping her from saying anything.
It was the feel of his skin on her mouth which brought her out of her stupor. She pushed him and slapped him hard.
"How dare you touch me!"
"Par Geet meri galti kya hai?" Maan was so surprised by Geet's behavior that he couldn't stop asking.
"Bas maine bol diya na, mujhe chune ki galti dobara mat karna"
She left from there in a huff but couldn't go far. She still could not believe she had spent last ten years studiously avoiding him. It was laughable the lengths she had gone to in order to make sure they never met face to face. Quite a few junior female editors had been overjoyed when she had sent them on plums assignments so that she wouldn't have to cross path with that no-good womanizing charmer.
How could she chitchat with him at the parties as if nothing has happened? As if he has never done what he had done? It was too much.
Of course, sometimes she had to attend the same functions as him- especially after he came into fashion industry and started his own brand-but in those parties she had made it a point to stay for as little time as possible and always to avoid him.
However there was no avoiding Maan now.
Her taiji chose that moment to come into the hall. She gave an indulgent smile to Maan and started chatting with him. Geet could not hear what he was saying to her taiji but she fluttered her eyes and laughed loud calling him a "mera pyara Saitan" taping in on the cheek.
Geet couldn't take her eyes off them, her whole attention was focused on Maan. She still could not believe Maan had forgotten about that long ago summer.
Hah! She has changed her tune! Last time taiji had seen Geet and Maan within a mile of each other she had no hesitation about warning Geet off. "That boy is trouble." She'd said. "Just like his father. You are not to have anything to do with him. If I catch you even talking to him, I will punish you."
But it had been too late.
She should have listened to her taiji. "Like father, like son," taiji had said at the time.
Look at her taiji now! They were laughing at something. Her taiji laid a hand on his upper arm and wiped a tear from under her eyes, calling him an 'impossible boy'. That was as much as Geet could bear, she marched back into the guest room.
"Tandh Rakh, Geet Tandh Rakh." She breathed in and out for a few seconds to cool her anger talking to herself, "In a day or two he'll be gone. You won't have to see him again for another ten years if you don't want to."
Maan had wanted to retaliate when he had felt the stinger from Geet but she had walked off in a temper and before he could catch up with her and ask her why she had done that, Maasiji, Geet's Taiji caught up and kept talking with him. Meanwhile Geet slipped off again.
He hadn't had the chance to get this close to Geet in years, which was odd, seeing who they moved in similar circles. But those circles always seemed to be rotating in different directions, the arc never intersecting. Why was that? Did she still feel guilty about the way their romance had ended?
That summer seemed to be almost a million years ago. He sighed and took a sip of his lassi which someone must have placed in his hands while he was contemplating the enigma called Geet.
"Hmmm'Geet, so you don't like me touching you. But why do I feel your eyes spoke a different language when you had turned in my arms."
"Err'. Maan what are you thinking so deeply about." Rajiv called Maan.
Rajiv was Maan's cousin who was about to marry Naintara.
"Kuch nahi Bhai. Mein bas kal raat ki party ke bare me kuch soch raha tha" Maan replied to Rajiv but his thoughts still lingered on Geet, 'ab kahan bacch ke jaogi, Geet. Now I will not be the one touching you but you will be.
"Kal raat koi party hai? Mujhe kuch patta kyun nahi hai iss party ke bare mein?"
"Maine bas abhi-abhi plan ke hai Bhai. Let me think it over and then I will let you know." Maan replied to Rajiv's queries.
