IIFA : Amitabh, Rani win top awards
It was a forgone conclusion that Amitabh Bachchan and Rani Mukherjee would win top awards at IIFA for their performances in 'Black'.
Having swept the boards at all the award functions this year, Sanjay Leela Bhansali's film Black emerged a winner again at the International Indian Film Academy (IIFA) awards at the Airport Expo Centre in Dubai. The movie won the Best Film award.
Amitabh Bachchan won the Best Actor trophy for his brilliant performance as an eccentric teacher of a blind-mute-deaf girl in the film. Rani Mukherjee, who played the impaired girl, walked away with Best Actress award.
Sanjay Leela Bhansali won the Best Director award for making a compelling movie about a girl who, guided by her mentor, struggles against her handicap to find an equal place for herself in the world.
Child actor Ayesha Kapoor won the Best Supporting Actress trophy for playing the young deaf-mute girl in 'Black'.
Abhishek Bachchan won the Best Supporting actor award for his performance in Ram Gopal Varma movie Sarkar Abhishek's performance in the last 30 minutes of the movie was highly appreciated by the critics.
One surprise of the evening was Javed Jaffery winning the Best Actor in a Comic Role award for his role in Salaam Namaste . Javed won despite strong competition from Akshay Kumar (in Garam Masala ) and Ritesh Deshmukh (in Bluffmaster ).
Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy won the Best Music Composer award for their music in Shaad Ali's movie Bunty Aur Babli . The 'Kajra Re' song from the film, which became a rage all over India, won two awards - the Best Playback Singer (Female) award for Alisha Chinai and Best Lyricist for Gulzar .
Composer-turned-singer Himesh Reshammiya took home the Best Playback Singer (Male) trophy for the title song of the movie Aashiq Banaya Aapne .
1
