Emraan Hashmi cast in Ghanchakkar

Kunal M Shah. MumbaiMirror.com

UTV Motion Pictures have been chalking out their third consecutive collaboration with director Rajkumar Gupta for some time now. And after their two thrillers - Aamir and No One Killed Jessica, the filmmakers had decided to make a more light-hearted film with the comedy Ghanchakkar. However, finding the male lead was reportedly quite a challenge.

The industry was abuzz with speculation about the possible contenders and those included Saif Ali Khan, Abhishek Bachchan and Emraan Hashmi. But, all the rumours can be put to rest, as Mumbai Mirror has learnt that Emraan has finally been zeroed down for the role in the film. Apparently, this will be the first UTV venture for the former Bhatt camp loyalist.

When contacted, UTV CEO Siddarth Roy Kapoor confirmed the news and said, "After two back to back hits with Aamir and No One Killed Jessica we are thrilled to announce Ghanchakkar, our next film with Rajkumar Gupta. What makes this even more exciting is that we will be working with Emraan Hashmi for the first time. Rajkumar and Parvez Sheikh have written the script and Emraan's character will be unlike any other role he has ever essayed in the past."

With regard to the script, director Rajkumar Gupta said, "Ghanchakkar is a quasi-realistic urban comedy, thriller highlighting the absurdity of certain real human situations."

Emraan told us that he decided to get on-board as he found the script very "edgy and gripping and at the same time extremely commercial". He explained, "Rajkumar has made very daring and bold films. When he narrated Ghanchakkar to me, I was very impressed."

Wow!! I'm happy for Emraan...finally he's starting to move up the ladder...about time I'll say...

This will be his first venture with UTV... Do you guys think maybe Vidya put in a good word for him with Siddhart?

Anyway, I cannot wait...He beats Saif, Abhi to the casting...there was no contest in my opinion anyway...Emraan has been delivering hit after hit while the other 2 have been delivering FLOPS.

but this will be the first time that Emraan is playing the hero in a non BHATT camp.

Go Emraan.

Do u really think Murder and Dirty Picture became hits because of Emraan? These films would have had the same box office results even if any other B list actor starred in that.

Common! the whole MURDER series is carried by Emraan...That's his movie...Why do you think they keep casting him in the sequels?

He does have a substantial fan base and I believe that they also contributed to the DP success... The rest is VIDYA of course...and the story...

But there is no denying the fact that Emraan is a great actor and he deserves to be working with great film productions.

What's the operational definition of a B-grade actor again?

@ Eraser

According to Wiki: A B grade actor is one who acts in B grade movies...that is

"A B movie is a low-budget commercial motion picture that is not definitively an arthouse or po*nographic film. In its original usage, during the Golden Age of Hollywood, the term more precisely identified a film intended for distribution as the less-publicized, bottom half of a double feature... In its post–Golden Age usage, there is ambiguity on both sides of the definition: on the one hand, many B movies display a high degree of craft and aesthetic ingenuity; on the other, the primary interest of many inexpensive exploitation films is prurient. In some cases, both may be true".

Then why doesn't any other " B list actor" star in them and pull them to box office success? This is a very strange argument. It's almost like some people don't want to believe Emraan has any box office clout whatsoever.

Glad to hear he's bagged another film with a good banner. He's building a pretty good resume of late, starting with Jannat, Raaz - TMC, OUATIM, DTBHJ, Murder 2, TDP, Shanghai and now this one. Maybe slow and steady does win the race after all.

Going by this logic, how exactly does TDP, OUATIM, Murder 1, Murder 2, Raaz 2, Gangster, Awarapan etc etc etc fit into the B-grade category?
