Yes, it will be more dramatic if ASR finds out about Shyam's duplicity on his own--but how will he perceive KKG after that for not informing him?

The answer to that question lies in what ASR believes is the path for Anjali's happiness. If he believes that ignorance is bliss for Anjali, then he would applaud Guptas decision to hide the truth. But, I think the writers have shown ASR as a man who is merciless to those who betray him and his sister. Therefore, anyone who keeps such a significant truth from him would suffer for it. The Guptas' decision to hide the truth to ease Payal's marriage into an affluent family would also underline that premise running through the show from the beginning--that ASR perceives KKG as a gold-digger.

Ooh--I can't wait for the drama. I watch the show because I love the conflicting emotions and sizzling tension between these two characters. The "get away-come closer" potential.
