This is a question that has always been on my mind. It's not as if I'm against love stories or something, but I prefer other relationships over this. So, I can't understand why there are so many takers for it! Take the highest ranked soaps or the highest ranked actors for instance. They are all love stories or actors playing the lead in a love story. The gushing is endless and not to forget the endless number of VMs, siggies and FFs😕 And viewers look for a love story even if the soap is not one😕
Then the bollywood movies, 90% of them are love stories and so are the songs. Not to mention the countless number of romance novels sold every year. Women as old as 50 years buy M&Bs😕 I read somewhere that romance is the most sold genre. Why is it so? It's almost as if no other relationship is important 😲 Or is that one tends to take the other relationships in life for granted?!
@bold- Exactly! I don't mean that no other genere does well, but even in an action movie there happens to be romance, whether needed or not! It puzzles me 😆
Harry Potter is not a love story but one of Adventure. It was done very well. Also action movies do well, but always there is a bit of romance added in to make it more interesting too. Even Avatar is love and action.
😆 I like your analysis! But in a way, even the relationship of a spouse is there by default😆 Everybody gets married, sooner or later. Friends also happen to be "new relationships" and so do children. But nobody gushes over friends or children. Why?!
Yes most relationships are there by default. The relationship with another person (spouse etc) is a new one and therefore it is where all the focus is and hence subject of movies, songs etc.

OP is misinformed. In Bollywood, lots of movies which do not have "love" as the primary flavor, fare very well at the box office. Examples - Sholay, 3 Idiots, Taare Zameen Par, Lagaan, Gadar.. oh Gosh! The list is endless.
So, no, per the title of this thread, "only love stories" do not work in India or elsewhere.
