Truly Maryada is one of the best serials that Star Plus has, there is a reality and a brutality to it. Just look at the family as a outsider:

A womanizing and abusive Head of Family who thinks women are not supposed to have any identity other than meeting their sexual needs and taking care of his children and his family etc...

A woman who has lived through 2 decades of emotional abuse, in denial, covering up to keep the womanizer's image in tact in front of his children

A son who is gay , dying inside leading a life which is a facade, a decent man who cannot speak about it boldly to the world (both due to his mom and his own insecurities) suffers to see the woman he cheated intentionally or unintentionally , unable to accept the man he loves to keep up this charade... how complex and I think Gaurav is doing an amazing Job in his role.

A son who is supposed to be smart, educated, loves his family , but is blind to everything - I would be surprised, that he has never wondered how they seem to lead such a lavish lifestyle on a till recent SSP salary , since Gaurav's business also had only been a few years! How he never seems to notice his wife's eyes, when she sees her FIL - the LECH, how he does not notice anything about his Dad, unlike his brother Gaurav. Wants to be a politician, but cant even read his own family !!

Vidya - the silent suffering noble woman... come on lady, accept it bravely like you have but also move on...

Priya - what kinda life - a husband who idolizes the man who tried to molest her, a MIL living in denial, covering it all, a MIL'S sister who is screwing her own sister's husband, a brother who loves the woman who loves the gay man, to boot - a politician whose son is gay and therefore bent on destroying a family that needs no help being destroyed ( they are in a self destruct zzone ) I am zapped she hasn't gone mental yet...

one family and multiple stories, but appreciate the CV;s for building such a complicated story and yet showing the woman strong and resilient , tolerant ... wonder for how long !! before one of them goes on a killing spree!!! crashing like a speeding train!!!

I suppose both - I love the complexity of the serial but the brutality of life they show can really get to you sometimes !! I know there may be families that have one or more than one of the kind of issues shown here ... but this family has all of it together !!

Yes, this show really does bring out all the emotions in you: happiness, anger, anxiety, sadness, sympathy, impatience, surprise, you name it. But the most common is anticipation as to what the next episode will come up with.

I agree the cvs have done a great job. In the begnning I was getting tired of all the love and romanc and focus on just adi and priya but i am glad now every character has a story of their own and they are all somehow related and everybody is given equal importance. I know we get frustrated with devyani but even in real life women of abuse take forever and many tries to actually stand up and end the abuse.

I'm a silent visitor/reader on this forum, but I've been following Maryada for awhile now.
I just love the way you described the characters and their situations in the show! Gaurav and Vidya are two of my fav characters on this show, so I take great interest in their storyline/situations. But like you said, its very interesting to watch the complexity of the relationships within and out of the Jhakkar family.
The show is truely 'hatke' in every sense...and not your typical saas-bahu melodrama. The storyline is just powerpacked with so many great issues that are being touched upon. I think another reason why I love this show is because of the star cast! Every actor is playing their role so well and are within the skin of their character. Also, with the focus on the 4 main women...the men have equal importance on the show too, which is a great balance to have.

Excellent post and the way you sump is superb!!!! 👏
I never realised unless and until you mentioned about Priya...Kudos to her...but still I feel she should do something which she is not doing...infact she is unable to do anything...CVs has to make her more bold and play some dirty games to show her husband real side of his father and his Masi...

I agree with you all, women who through years of emotional abuse start identifying with the abuser and it takes them months and years of counseling to get out of it, Priya has just begun giving strength to her MIL and as this bond strengthens, she will be bold enough to fight back and not take the abuse.

Women are bound by both societal and their own personal restrictions and takes them long... some women seek abusive relationships - like Uttara - she had a physically abusive husband and now she has found for herself a Jija who is using her ... pathetic life indeed!!

The men - Gaurav , Adi or Dadaji - men of honor, but in situations that make them unintentionally hurt the very people they love.

The worst character on the show of course is Mr. BJ - the screwball who thinks the world revolved around him, narcissistic, selfish to the core, uses people and situations ... unfortunately is also in a position of power that impacts not just the family but also the society!!

Amazing Serial - haven't missed many episodes... except during the crazy woman uttara amd jija affair time!!

The CV's have a very mature approach, kudos to them for bringing in smiles despite the horror of that family... can you even imagine surviving something like this?

Superb post, especially the title. Isnt that how their journey began, on a train.

You've given a good description of the characters. Like you said (sorry dont know your name) the Jakhar family dont need any outside help in destroying themselves. Theres a ticking timebomb in the house, only time will tell when it will explode. And when it does apart from God no one can save them or should i say Brahma.
Never mind Priya going mental, she's the ticking timebomb. Didnt Bauji say that Priya had a huge storm brewing inside of her which she was fighting to keep in. And only time will tell when she will let it all erupt.

And i agree and thank the CVs for bringing us something really different on Indian TV which make it worthwhile to watch.

I think I agree with most of your analysis in an excellent post. There are, however, TWO points on which I beg to differ
.
1. Deviyani: I find her unbearably selfish.Just to save her SON,she thoughtlessly sacrificed Vidya's life. It is unrealistic that she is simply protecting TWO of her children from the truth, never mind that she is hurting so many others like her FIL,DILs,even her sister(who perhaps may not have embarked on the adulterous affair IF she knew the truth about her BIL) Dev. has made a choice, that many wives of powerful people make-to live in a bad relationship in exchange of a materially comfortable life. I mean her FATHER-IN-LAW doesn't want to save the family or its name as much as she does! And all this nonsense about all the sacrifices she has made is just plain poppycock. In any case everybody Is going to find out sooner or later-so what price her so called sacrifices? Do you think Adi will forgive her for protecting his wife's abuser?

2) Adi is a very poorly drawn, one dimensional character. He has only two states of being- angry with Priya or wanting to make love to her-no understanding, love or respect. What kind of marriage is this? He has NO empathy-he can't tell that his wife hates his father. He claims to be close to his brother & doesn't have a CLUE about his alternate sexuality? His ambition is to be a politician and he doesn't know how to read those he CLAIMS to be closest to? He has NO knowledge of the source of his family's wealth? He IS educated...so why doesn't he ask questions?

These are major irritants for me,but I still like the soap! It is truly HATKE!!

If I have offended anybody,I apologize in advance!
