Did Lataji copy Shamsad Begum?

I particularly enjoyed the one in episode 27, where Pandit Jasraj says that Lata Mangeshkar once did try to follow Lata Mankeshkar. Your comments, please

tha was a funny statement.. according to me lata mangeshkar copied (or inspired by) Norrjehan.. but in very early stage ...songs in anokha pyaar, barssat, lahore, bazaar, andaz, majboor, badi bahen, are perfect example of this,, but she started singing in her own voice from the film awara and albela( both in 1951 and on same day)

Actually Pt Jasraj was quite right. Lata sure was inspired by Noorjahan and Samshad Begum in her early years. Listen to "Challe Jaana Nahin" from Badi Behen (1950).. u will actually find traces of NoorJahan in her voice. But the evolution of Lata was quite fast and rapid after that. Her superiority was evident in the late 50's and the 60's. Listen to "O Basanti Pavan Paagal' from Jis Desh Mein Ganga Behti Hai (1960). Such a difficult song (based on Basant Mukhari) and so well sung. Here you will find no Noorjahan or Samshad in her voice. This was Lata at her best. Very original, supreme and unbeatable.

Out of today's singers, I think Shreya Ghoshal comes closest to that kinda purity, but even she is decades away from such perfection.

Yes...listen to "uthae ja unke sitam" from Andaz
No doubt she had her own style pretty soon and has sung some of the best film songs like "satyam Shivam Sundaram","O sajana barkha bahar aie" and "Yara sili sili"

I agree.........lata did copy shamshad begum and noorjehan initially, if you listen to her initial songs she does sing with a little bit of nasal tone- but she got back to her original style and voice very soon- and we are lucky that she did!

This is correct. It was more Madam Noor Jehan than Shamshad Begum.

Chandoba ji, regarding "singing in her own voice", I would say that it was a couple of years earlier starting from Barsaat in 1949...
