37. A Kick and a Kiss
She had never imagined Maan would be such an affectionate person...no that was not true because it was his tender, caring nature that had made her fall in love with him. But who would have thought that once they were married he would become so open about his affection, so expressive about his care and so comfortable with it too... within a span of few weeks, it became difficult to think back to a time when she had been afraid of him afraid of his touch, his nearness. He touched her often, even at work, his fingers lingering on her cheek when he tucked her hair behind her ears, linking his hands with hers while they walked together, a kiss on her forehead or cheek when he moved away from her, his arm around her shoulder when they sat side by side...at times simply holding her hand while driving. It was a constant reminder of his presence in her life, a reminder of his care and support. She wondered if he even knew the impact these gestures had on her. he made her so used to his presence that even a moment away from him made her feel lonely and restless. But then so did every moment alone with him. That was another kind of restlessness, a longing. She sighed.
Of late whenever he was near her she was filled with this anticipation, this strange panicky feel, the embarrassment that Maan will he able to hear the way her heart went bang bang. She felt this desire to lean into something for she would become so weak kneed. Yet she wished to prolong those moments ...even when they brought goose bumps ...like the times when he leaned over her while she was working on Mr. Rao's project...
She was checking the details , while he entered the cabin...as always she could sense the exact moment he came into the cabin.
"Geet, is the reports ready?"
"Yes almost ..there is just this one thing..." he moved to stand behind her.
"Did you put in the latest estimation after the changes they asked? Let me just check..." he leaned down to peer into her PC.
His face came so near her that his breath made the tendrils of her hair move. His chin was almost resting on her shoulders. "Now let me see..."His chest pressed on to her back when he took the mouse from her hands that were starting to tremble, to check on some other detail. His words made her jumkas sway. She tried to shift away slightly so that he could have more room and she could have the space to control her erratic pulse. No sooner had the thought entered her mind than his other hand was placed casually on the other side of her as if for leverage but effectively trapping her between his arms. She held herself still, not trusting to move, or even turn her head. The musky fragrance of his cologne teased her, building in her a desire to take a deeper breath to fill herself with the unique smell of him.. After a few minutes, as though he could feel the tension that emanated from her, he placed his free hand on her arm and gently rubbed it up and down trying to calm and comfort her. All it succeeded in doing was to give her goose bumps. When she felt she couldn't bare it any longer, he just planted a quick kiss on her cheek and moved away complimenting, "Everything seems to be in order, Geet."
He was not at all self conscious about touching or being touched...she smiled as she remembered the time he joined them to watch a movie...
After a while he lay down with his head on Daadi's lap...his sarcastic comments at the antics of the hero
meant to irritate them...later on Daadi was called away to attend her friends call at the house phone...
"Geet, can you pass the water jug?"
She went to him to give him the jug. After taking a gulp, he pulled her down to take the seat Daadi had vacated and promptly lay down on her lap.
"Now you can be my pillow!" he announced with a naughty smile. Then placed her hand on his hair to carry on the way Daadi was running her hand thru his while she lay on her lap.
When Daadi came back, Geet tried to move away but he wouldn't let her. Turning to look at Daadi, he said, "Pillows are not allowed to walk away. I got a new one and I'm keeping it!"
No, one couldn't dream of a husband more perfect than Maan. He started attending the yoga classes with her and insisted on keeping her company while she took her walk after dinner. Their talks during those times were so relaxed, helping them understand each other better. He had asked her about her aspirations, about the career choices she would like to pursue. She was reluctant to talk about them, as she felt those dreams had no meaning now. But he wouldn't let go, but set example by talking about the dreams he had when he took over KC, about his future aims. She knew he waited for her to talk about that terrible part of her past. She doesn't think she could do that, not without breaking the cocoon of tranquility and happiness than now surrounded her. he would always hold her hand while they had their walk, threading his fingers thru hers and pull her closer in the sheltering warmth of his body when they walked back inside their home.
She had never thought she would become so dependent on him. Today she had cancelled her stroll because Maan was not there to accompany her. He had to go away for an out of city meeting. She had pleaded tiredness when Daadi and Rudr, both had offered to keep her company. Though it was past 11 at night sleep still eluded her because Maan was not there beside her. Even Sonu seemed quiet without his papa. She had lain on a bed for almost an hour, trying to find a comfortable position to settle down. Then had given up to get up from the bed. Giving in to an intense impulse she raided his cupboard to pull out one of his shirts to wear. So here she was sleepless, with nothing to keep her mind occupied or help her sleep, wearing her husband's shirt in a feeble attempt to feel his presence. Who would have imagined she would have changed so much, that there would come a time when she would not onlt stop cringing from a man's touch but openly wish for it?... no not any man's touch, she corrected but Maan's. his gentle caresses were making her crave, making her wish for a future...
To distract herself from such thoughts, she switched on the radio and the song flowed...
"Babaji," she whispered gazing at the night sky, " are you trying to tell me something?"

she closed her eyes to feel the music, to gather inspiration from the lyrics. She was so absorbed in it that she didn't notice Maan who had entered their bedroom. He was filled with such tenderness and love at the sight of her wearing his shirt. She had her arms around herself as if seeking to feel his arms around her. Moving quietly to stand behind her, he called her softly, "Geet"
She turned towards him with an open smile of welcome and felt the first solid kick.
"Oh!" She exclaimed, still half turned towards him, her smile of welcome transformed into one of awe. Her hand touched her stomach.
"What is it Geet?"
"Sonu kicked! I think sonu loves his papa very much, hai na Sonu? Sonu was missing papa today...so he was very quiet inside mamma's tummy today. And when he heard his papa's voice he was so happy, hain na Sonu?" she asked in a sweet voice, looking down to caress her baby. He saw the lone tear that slid down her cheek, a contrast to the beauty of her smile. He was so enchanted by her, by her words by the moment. He cupped her face and wiped away the wetness with his thumb.
"oh!" she exclaimed again.
"Can I feel her?" The need and the love reflected in his voice.
With a smile that brightened further, she took his hand and placed it over her stomach, where she had felt the last kick.
"Wait it may take some time." She had just said that and Maan felt a strong thump against his hand. He looked down in amazement and Geet laughed. He felt the next kick that followed immediately as if the baby was pleased with their reactions and decided to join their happiness.
"Shona..." Maan's voice had a catch to it, " papa loves you too, baby!"
As Maan's hand caressed her tummy, it slightly edged under the shirt she was wearing to touch her taut stomach. Geet's gasp brought his eyes back to her face. The expression in it pulled at him. He surrendered to the temptation that had coursed thru him at the sight of her waiting for him, wearing his shirt...threading his fingers into her hair, he pulled her face towards him, ever so slightly giving her time to withdraw, yet praying that she would not...his lips touched hers without demanding anything but her compliance, his mouth warm and tender against hers. He brushed his lips against repeatedly and then nibbled delicately on her lips until he felt her tremble, though not with fear.
"Maan..." her voice shook when he raised his head to look at her.
"shh... I just want to kiss you...to taste u...will you let me , Geet?"
He didn't wait for her answer but lowered his head to kiss her again. He savoured every moment of kissing her warm moist lips, exploring the line of her mouth with the tip of his tongue and then applying a little pressure to part her lips and touch the tip of her tongue with his. A whisper of sound rose in her throat. He used all his restraint to keep the kiss sweet and unthreatening...he told himself to go slow, to do no more than he had said he would. Her breathing turned shallow and she raised a hand to grasp the front of his shirt as though to hold on.
Suddenly another strong kick was given against his hand, which was still placed on her stomach, breaking into his passion. He laughed slightly and patted the baby, " Patha he, patha he! Mamma is yours..."
He looked at Geet who was still fighting to regain her control. Her face a reflection of her inner turmoil...of her confusion, happiness and her bewilderment at her newly awakened passion. He couldn't resist cupping her face to press a kiss on her forehead, "Thank you Geet for sharing this moment with me."
