Why the payal?!
In indian culture, the payal has a huge significance: spiritual and social.
From a baby, payals are added to her feet by her parents so that when she she learns to walk, she delights the family with the melodious tunes.
It is also believed to be a protection from negative energies.
also traditionally, a new bride announces her arrival in her husband's home with the thinkling sounds of her payal. Its also given as a gift for the new bride.
Khushi's payal is given to her from her amma and she treasures it so much and will not replace it at any cost.
Her payal 'left' her in her confrontation with Arnav during the anniversary party of Shyam-Anjali. In a way, her protection has left her and now she is not protected from the evilness of shyam and then issues with her only form of protection, babuji also being ill.
Arnav picks it up and now it becomes the item that he also treasures as it comes from Khushi and keeps it safe. But interesting not giving it back to her as he wants something of hers to keep and hold. He now becomes her protector by keeping her payal safe.
Today, he returns the payal as he understands that its true meaning is far more significant for khushi than him. he understands that maternal bond surpasses any form of love. Only he is able to understand that compared to anyone else since that is also what he craves - to hold on to his maternal bond but I'm not sure if he has any item that reminds him of that. That also explains why he also values Anjali about anything else.
Today, he sacrificed the item that he values to return it to khushi and also in such a style.
Indirectly he has given her her 1st bridal gift - the payal.
he will be placing it on her right foot - signifying new beginning. As we start anything with our right foot signifying new beginnings and usually that is a good sign!
But now for Khushi, the payal has a different meaning. Its his gift to her and its a symbol of his love (her true love, soulmate love) and she will definitely treasure it in the coming days and we may see her refusing to remove the payal at any cost.
And it was also done in a form of a proposal and by her not withdrawing her foot from him, indirectly she has also said yes! Again another marriage connotation.
This also reminds me that sometimes, you have to let the thing you treasure go and if it returns, it was always meant to be yours. if it didnt, it was never meant to be.
- Maybe they will need to take heed of this saying as they embark on the upcoming journey that will be full of challenges.

well i guess now the payal scene will be used mainly as flashbacks for both of them as they embark on the-going-to-be-difficult-to-watch next bit of their journey.
amazing isnt it - both motivated by sacrifices for their family.
arnav cant stand the taunts on his nani so in haste will say that he will marry lavanya.
khushi will now also say yes to shyam to protect her babuji and the family reputation since i think it's only time before bauji uses the card of it being inappropriate to have a single man in the house with marriageble age girls etc.
