 | Tulsi Garden Smriti Malhotra Irani is the new BJP mascot. The ever-suffering Tulsi of Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi fame is much sought after now, and is already a constant at all important party dos. The recent convert was also the star presence at L.K. Advani's tea party last fortnight, to celebrate the assembly poll victory. This when two of the party's RS nominees, Hema Malini and Dara Singh, were also present. Smriti was also the chief attraction at party president Venkaiah Naidu's lunch last week. BJP insiders say she "projects the righteous moral view" which jells well with the party's philosophy. Tulsi too seems keen to play up the 'bharatiya nari' image. Like she does on her TV programme, Kuch Dil Se, which regularly scoffs at anything offbeat, sticking to the traditional and the conservative. People who know her well say she's always had high political ambitions. Coupled with a gift of the gab and an "upwardly mobile" persona, she seems to be doing well for herself in the saffron party. Now, the key point: does all this make Smriti Malhotra Irani the hot favourite to head the BJP's Mahila Morcha? Her increasing popularity means it may not be too far-fetched an idea. |
