BEING AN AGEIST AS BAD AS BEING A SEXIST?

being an ageist I think at least is as bad as being a racist or sexist. Today some are having problems because the 40 yrs olds (Which I fail to understand how is "old") are "ruling" while the young folks apparently are not given much of a chance due to the older actors. Why can't the old actors also play lead in films?...why do they have to reside to "Character roles" when they get old? The big debate on khan versus non khan actors I also didn't get because Bollywood has been pretty consistent in giving a mixed lot a chance. Now it's another thing that srk, salman, and amir have sustained in the industry for 20 something yrs; while the other actors who started out with them could not do. The mark that these three will leave behind might change Bollywood forever.

I don't have any problem with the "oldies" playing college boys, because the profession they are in allows them that freedom and I don't care even if they act out lead roles by the time they are 60. The only issue I have with Bollywood though is that women are not provided the same leisure and benefits that men are...

But how is it the oldies fault if the young lads are not able to pull the crowd in?!?! But to be fair, it takes time for the audience to accept changes.

last few days have really made me like salman, srk, amir, saif, akshay so much more. The things this forum can do...better move away before something more strange happens.

Wow, kudos to your post!!! 👏 I agree with everything you said, 100%! Bollywood is obviously going to be remembered for the Khans 20-30 years from now. They have maintained their fan base and still continue to get those excellent scripts. Salman is more popular than ever. Even though I don't like him, you cannot deny his charisma and starpower. Aamir and SRK may not be as popular as Salman right now, but their loyal fan base is still there. They will continue to choose the right films and scripts to sustain their careers even till the 50's! Akshay, Hrithik, and Ajay are also in the same pattern and not going anywhere anytime soon. Ranbir has the chance to sustain his career if Rockstar and Barfee do well. But, the newbies are so dull. Ranveer is going to fade away quickly. As for Shahid, Imran, etc. their box office standing is still questionable. If they don't reinvent themselves in the next year or two, they will fade away to!

i agree...

but its kinda like a universal thing...men tend to look better as they become older...coz somehow, women find older men sexier...they like the sense of power and persona they project...so the khan trinity, saif and akshay still maintain their respective fan following...

with the male audience, they like younger women better...so once a heroine is post her 30s, she loses appeal because she dosent look as good as she does when she was in her 20s...in terms of body, face, etc...

dunno its twisted and sad and sexist...but thts the way the world runs i guess...

The ruling Khans deserve all the hype and super stardom. They really do.

Can you even compare any of the newer actors to them? No yet.

But I mean older women can be sexy too...at least in Hollywood all of the tagged sexy ladies are not 20 yr olds. They are all well into their thirties and some in 40s too. It depends on how they have outwardly maintained themselves also but the matured look can work in their favor.

What is old? Old is so subjective. Suppose you plan to live for 60 yrs, then by the time you're 20 you should feel old cuz you have lived 1/3rd of your life already...damn!

true...

but...like...okay,...this is gonna sound horrible and stereotypical but bear with me..
older women have a certain sense of accomplishment compared to younger ones because they are more mature and have seen more of life...so all the experience and wisdom MAY seem intimidating for men because lets face it, no man wants to be dominated by a woman..and its very hard for a guy to get attracted to a woman who seems more powerful than he is...an example off the top of my head would be that "Taller" women with a more dominating screen presence, like sushmita, Tabu etc arent given many roles because, u know, something dosent look right when the heroine is taller than the hero...we don't like the heroine to be one up on the hero...in terms of height, weight, role, footage and yes, age too..it dosent seem right...

and if the woman happens to be really urm old, like say in her 50s and stuff...guys tend to look at her with "Respect" and admiration more than "gosh shes hawt..."..and for heroines to be successful, they need to sort of urm...arouse the male audience i guess...😆...tht explains the likes of rani, juhi etc not having a huge male fan following...majority of their fans are females and so, they never reached the peaks of popularity that a certain madhuri, or a sridevi, or a katrina kaif reached with their chest heaving item numbers.

if we gender switch the same situations though, women tend to like their man with a powerful, "im the boss" kinda personality...its somehow attractive on them...

.so a nineteen year old girl today might say "gosh salman is hot" ...but i doubt a nineteen year old boy would say "gosh sridevi is hot"...he might say "sridevi is lovely, beautiful "whtever...but i doubt there would be any attraction in THAT way...

I agree with your post. I always wonder how come the man's can always act even till they are 60 plus but as for the ladies, once they reach late 30's or 40's, they lose their market. I still think that i will surely love if Juhi Chawla, Tabu, Shilpa Shetty, Kajol, Preity, Rani comes back and rules the screen. People need to change the mind concept of being a sexist 😕

Awesome post Zainab !!
I think this Ageist concept is only in practice for Bollywood...coz if we check out Ladies in Hollywood...the ones that are successful and famous are mostly the women in their 30s or even 40s...people here do find them sexy even in their 40s...its their attitude and the way they have been maintaining themselves...If a woman is appealing to the audience, she will be loved by all...Age does not matter as far as Hollywood is concerned!

But it is not possible that way in Bollywood i guess as Smartie already mentioned about how women likes older men and men likes younger women...Thats the case in Bwood...
I know its contradictory much but see people still worship Big B and everyone will continue to love the Khans until their very last breath...same goes for Akki and Ajay...Deols could have been there, but they faded...

among the younger lot, Ranbir has the highest potential...Ranveer is just one film old, so cant make any judgement there...Shahid is going thru a hard time already and I dont see Imran as a superstar either...
and some others who really act good are very under-rated...
among ladies, just imagine if Bebo and PC retire, Bollywood will be pretty empty in talents department from ladies side...!!

totally agree with you here...
I would give you my own Brother's example...if he see Deepika or Katrina, he would say this very next moment, " Gosh she looks sexy and so damn hot"

but if he sees Juhi, Madhuri or Sridevi at some party or event : " she looks gorgeous, so beautiful!!"

but me irrespective of age, I would find the guy Hot...😆 and I will start drooling on him as well😆

another interesting point...

notice how to get ridicolous popularity, the heros and heroines need to have a gr8 fan following from the opposite sex...

so someone like srk is really popular with all the girls screaming "WE LOOOVE U SRK"

but say someone like ajay devgan or sunny deol, who hardly have any fangirls and have a more testosterone charged fangroup arent as popular...(Exception being rajnikanth...he has no fangirls and he can still have all the khans for breakfast)

same with the girls...kajol, rani, tabu, vidya have more female fans than male fans, and so, their craze isnt as big as the one madhuri or sridevi had...
