NOTE: first i think i deserve a good beating for keeping you all hanging up for the next update. really sorry people for the delay. my med coll has finally started and i was there without my lappy. now that i'll be taking lappy back with me to hostel i promise to maintain bi-weekly updates.😊

second, sorry once again due to lack of time i am not replying individually to all comments this time but i appreciate all of them<3 thank you people😊

"You again did it?"

"I can't believe you're pointing at me? Like I had wanted to drown myself for his one kiss!"

"You had wanted the kiss. The drowning part was co-incidence."

"I was looking for sympathy. You know I could have died."

"Yes you wouldn't be standing right infront of me trying to act as if things are normal. When will you stop running away? Say it before it's too late."

"You think I enjoy all this? I wanted to clear his doubts; tell him what exactly I feel for him. But his stupid high-hand arrogance steps in between. And the next moment when I try to leave his affection booms in my face. I am just bloody confused Dia what to do next?"

"Nupur , love is a complicated business honey. To feel confused is right. Shows you r deep down in love. I ain't being critical but i think you try too hard and hold yourself. You just need to loosen up and let yourself go with the flow. Okay?"

"I get that Dia. I'll try my best not to rationalize things but just listen to my heart."

"Now that's like my Choc-pie. Let's go down now to infuse life in the party."

"Am I looking alright?" I nervously tucked a loose strand behind my ears as I awaited Dia's judgement

"Hmmm...looks like someone else will need the first aid the other way around this time. You are looking smoking hot in this red shimmer gown. Should I call the fire-brigade to be on the safe-side?" She winked.

"Hhahaa...it's all your fault. Next time hang some normal clothes in your wardrobe other than these backless gowns."

"I know quite well you are squeaking inside to show this off to someone. Just complain before me."She pouted.

"Dia!"

The place was unrecognizable. The sweeping staircase leading to the center black and white marbled hall and the hugs doors lead to the lawn outside. Twinkling multi-lights adorned every nook and corner of the place illuminating it. The sight seemed straight out of a Disney castle. Mistletoe's hung all over the place. Like a curious child I gaped at the dazzle around me.

We were met with a huge roar of cheers and claps as we appeared on the head landing of the staircase. Dia was right infront of me acknowledging the delightful applause with a poised calm.

"Can I have the honour to dance with my fair lady?" Ian stepped forward and bent down on his knees.

Trying hard to hide her blush Dia replied ,"That's a cheesy one. Infact I am honoured to dance with my darling husband." She gave her hand in his which was met by a wet kiss on her wrist.

I joined the cheering of the crowd this time as we encouraged the guests of honors to dance.

Ian & Dia moved downstairs slowly to get to the center of the hall. Following them I stepped down the stairs; my eyes in search of him all the while in the sea of black tuxes.

The crowd cleared on one side and he stepped forward looking dashing in his velvet black tux thrown casually over a white shirt. His hair gelled and neatly combed backwards. His hazel eyes met my dark brown ones. My heart stopped beating in that one moment.

Usually I would have looked away under that intense stare. But something was holding me today to stop me from withdrawing my gaze. As if I was afraid to break this connection with me. It seemed as if my whole life depended upon this one connection. He was slowly coming towards me with a slight smile on his lips.

"Nupur, You are looking unbelievably gorgeous tonight."

I blinked.

"This open hair just suits you more."

"Aman." The connection had broken. I was now looking into Aman's beaming face.

"All the waiting was worth it. I can't take my eyes off you."

I was frozen in my place. He was blocking my view of Mayank. Before I could react further he bend down to and gave me a peck on my right cheek.

A repulsive wake passed inside me as I instantly stepped back.

"Hey...Hey...Aman. You look handsome yourself . If you could just pardon me right now I've been waiting for someone else."

I peeped about him wondering if Mayank had seen Aman planting a peck on my cheek.

"Umm...Who's that? I can't see anyone there."

The space where Mayank had just now been standing was empty. I saw a hurried flap of a coat disappearing out of the entrance gates into the lawn outside. I broke into a run to follow him.

"Nupur where are you going?"

I increased the velocity of my sprint as I didn't want Aman to follow me. I paused for breath once i was outside. The lawn was deserted except for the dark corners where couples were cuddled together. Where was he? I was a movement at the back . Someone was taking a stroll in the woods behind the lawn.

"Mayank! Mayank!!"

He was walking with his hands casually tucked in the pocket of his trousers along the thin trail between the trees of the wood. The moon shone above outlining the dark pine trees.

"Go back Nupur. You will miss the party inside."

"What about the host himself giving his party a miss?"

"My servants are there to take care of everything." He stopped bringing out a cigarette from inside his pocket and popping it in his mouth.

"You smoke?"

"Apparently yes Doc." He brought out the lighter next to light it.

"You have the guts to smoke infront of me? Throw it out of your mouth right now!"

"Just coz I saved your life you are imagining too much to order me."

"Why didn't you let me die then? I would have drowned and made things simpler for you."

"Right and next cops would take me in blaming me. I am not a fool Miss."

"You are one when you smoke that damn thing!" I jerked forwards & whisked it out from his mouth and threw it on the ground.

He laughed a hollow laugh." I have the remaining pack with me. You'll tire yourself out throwing it out from my mouth."

"You think it's a joke? This is the first time I caught you smoking. What's wrong with you?"

"You ask a wrong guy what's wrong with him." He smiled.

"I know you are stressed out but that doesn't mean you smoke. The worry ain't gonna fly away with the carcinogen filled smoke."

"What gave you the impression I was worried to get on smoking? Babes that's just a luxury of life."

"You used to be a better actor before Mayank."

"Hmmm...maybe I am out of practice."

His eyes turned bloodshot. The fake smile was off his face. I took a deep breath.

"I am sorry for everything."

"I never wanted your sorry."

"There's been a huge misunderstanding between us Mayank. I know I have hurted you unintentionally. But can we let that go behind us?"

"Is there anything left to look forward to in future? "

"Can't you see right infront of you?" I looked imploringly at him through my tears.

"I see a beautiful girl who I thought was..."

"...was?"

"...was wrong in her decision to reject me."

"And now?"

"She seems perfectly happy with her choice." He turned away.

I broke down." Why are you making it so hard? Can't you see I am standing here just for you? You were the only one that ever mattered . Aman lied when he said we are engaged. I had kept it on hold. I hadn't accepted his proposal."

"But you never rejected it either." His cold voice strung me.

"Damn it..I love you!!"

There was an unexpected silence all around. He continued to stand with his back turned. I had half-expected for him to joyfully enclose me in his arms hearing my confession. But I kept waiting as minutes flew by.

"Please say something." I pleaded in a low tone afraid of his surreal silence.

I waited endlessly for his never coming response. A hot wave of anger began to trickle down impatiently from my head as I turned restless at his cold behaviour.

"You think I am lying? Or is it a set up to make me confess and then laugh it loud over with your friends? Do you think I am a girl who easily lets out her feelings? You think it's below your so called high standards that I am the one to confess such?"

"Am I talking to a stone??"

"The party is inside Nupur."

"Party? To hell with that party? Why are you ignoring me now? You are not even looking at me? Tell me you don't care for me just once and I shall leave!"

"I don't Nupur."

"Look in my eyes and say!"

"Right am back to speaking to a stone. You can't look in my eyes and say! "

"You don't care for me? Fine. I absolutely believe you."

Angrily I banged my head against the trunk of the nearest pine tree. Blood drops oozed down from my forehead.

"Nupur! STOP THAT!!" finally he turned around.

"How does it matter when you don't care?"

I lurched myself again for a second clash with the tree but a strong muscular pair of arms gripped me from my waist and turned me around pinning me against the trunk. I could feel his hot breath on my cheeks.

"Are YOU out of your mind??" he growled angrily.

"Just let go off me." I struggled hard to get out of the intimate closeness.

"STOP IT RIGHT NOW or I'll have to slap some senses in ya!"

"But you DON'T CARE!" I shouted back at him.

"Yes I don't."

"NO. You do!"

With all the strength I could gather I flung my arms around him and snuggled deep into his chest. Tears rolled down my face.

"Yes you do Mayank. You care for me." I sobbed some more in his arms. He laid his hands on my back pulling me closer into his warm embrace. Smoothly he stroked the flowing open hair on my back as I let my tears dry.

"Nupur calm down please." He whispered in my ears.

I snuggled in some more in response as I inhaled the lavender scent of his body. Gently he pulled me apart.

"Promise me you wouldn't ever try to hurt yourself again." His eyes were firm in demand.

"Just tell me what's bothering you so much to stop your real feelings for me." I looked back in his eyes.

"First I need a promise Nupur."

"I promise I wouldn't act so stupid again. All I need is you."

He drew out a cream colored silk handkerchief from his shirt pocket and gently wiped the bruise on my forehead. He pressed it next to stop the bleeding. He leaned in closer to blow some air over the wound. Trembling at the closeness I closed my eyes.

"When I say I don't care for you I don't know myself if I'm lying. Probably you have gotten to know me better to spot if I lie to you. Trust me I am honored that you love me as you say. But you sensed it right that something is stopping me to accept it. I know I was the one to start it first by confessing to you. But I hated the feeling of being a ping-pong. The small ball you hurl it around in the direction you wish."

My jaw dropped in horror as I understood what was coming next.

"When I confessed and awaited your reply after the initial refusal Aman told me about the marriage proposal. You say you don't like him but you hang with him in the pub. You brought him here in the party. How could you not know it was my party? Can't you guess if Ian & Dia would be here. That automatically brings me in the picture. How do I feel when I see him waiting for you right outside your room, kissing you in the hall? Maybe I am not used to being a second choice or being ruthlessly made to feel jealous. I know it's not your fault. I trust you this much that you would never do such a thing to me intentionally. Though I never say but the thing is even I get hurt deeply. I can't predict the outcome but let's hope time can heal everything."

Saying he opened his coat and laid out the warm tux over my bare shoulders in the chilly damp night and turned to walk away.
