Serial Symphony
Cutting an album is no longer limited only to films and private albums, as, increasingly, soundtracks of popular serials are being released, finds Dhaval Roy
It's not just title tracks or Bollywood numbers that are played in party scenes in TV shows these days. Of late, many serials feature compositions that are being compiled and released in entire albums.
Many years ago, songs from Amanat was released in an album, but other TV serials didn't really follow suit. Now, albums like talent hunt contestants' renditions of songs or Star Parivaar, a compilation of the title tracks of daily and weekly shows like Star Plus' Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi, Kahaani Ghar Ghar Ki, Baa Bahoo Aur Baby, etc have caught the fancy of the listeners. As Kavita More, a salesperson at a music shop, says, "These albums do considerably well, even if the sales are not as big as Bollywood's soundtracks." One such album is of Star One's Remix, which was released on Valentine's Day and features songs by the pop group Aasma. As the producer Shrishti Arya says, "For us, it's like reaching out to the audience directly and having them more involved in the show. It's not like an episode that they don't get to watch again. With a music album, they are constantly in touch and are investing something more than just the cable money, which makes it more important to them."
The Barjatyas' Sahara One show Woh Rehne Waali Mehlon Ki, and Star Plus' Pyar Ke Do Naam Ek Radha Ek Shyam have quite a few tracks, and as director Kavita Barjatya says, "It's the channel decision, and if they are okay with it, we are thinking of releasing an album some time later." Star Plus' Dharti Ka Veer Yodha - Prithviraj Chauhan is also up for release soon. The songs are penned by Ravindra Jain and sung by the likes of Roop Kumar Rathore, Sadhna Sargam, Suresh Wadkar, Shreya Ghosal. Other than the title track Dharti Ka Veer Yodha - Prithviraj Chauhan, there are seven tracks. So the next time one goes to a music store, one could walk out with not just filmy or pop but TV serial albums as well!
