Hi all. I want to be a writer. This thing passed my mind when I was watching a debate on journalism on a news channel.

Should journalism be out of censorship? why or why not?

I think not, because it is people's ONLY way to get to know what's happening in the world.. and euphemisms of any kind would just.. wreck the idea of.. democratic media. Media is for people. I agree not ALL news is useful but censorship shouldn't be encouraged. People ought to know the TRUTH.

In most Asian countries Media is scrutinized if not controlled by the Govt. Much debate has been raised on freedom of press. A true, unbaised and fair reporting is needed.
Just read about a Mexican Newspaper Editor abducted and murdered by a criminal gang that decapitated her and also left a threatening note. They did not like her article denouncing drugs.

Several journalists have been kidnapped or killed in war zones too. Still they bravely carry on.

Media is manipulative in India, and then I come down to this - there isn't any source that would tell you what 'exactly' happens round the world or something. TV channels and newspapers, even the most respected ones come up with high class shit, nobody believes it. And I don't think we'd like to simply join in the whole mess, well I wanna be a journalist myself but what interests me might not be so commercial as media has become now. This is no more the time when we get what's adequate for news and what is truthful but the job remains fascinating to me, honestly, what with whatever little liberty it has to offer.

Liberty of sorts, you know, someway or the other, you get to speak your head to a larger group of people. And then, you don't always have to be what I think would be a mainstream journalist, you can go in for one of those intelligent magazines which don't just tell you how huge Aishwarya Rai looks, I am sure there are still some like these! 😛

I notice that quite a few times journalists face legal suits for writing unsavory truths about well known persons. Hopefully they are backed by the Company they work for.
I have a couple of buddies covering finance news and they have faced some nasty company directors and claims.

When one makes a career choice one is expected to have gone through the pros and cons of the decision. Once aware of the highs and lows one can carve out ones own path accordingly. Would depend on what drives one- be it fame , money, thrill or passion associated with that career.

What should be or should not be is quite subjective. Having chosen ones career one can do what one believes in and see where it takes you. That would be part of the challenge.

Yes having decided on something one has to stick to it without fear or doubt.

Isn't telling the truth and getting your voice out, is the heart of a journalist, but how many journalist follow their heart? The new motto for journalist is self-censorship, due to market pressures, where newsworthy stories are avoided because they are too boring or complicated. And majorities in the print and broadcast media acknowledge that newsworthy stories are often or sometimes avoided because of their complexity or lack of audience appeal. It's all about what sells! The true journalism is lost or buried. In my opinion true journalism should not be censored as long as you don't apply self-censorship on your self, write what your heart desires.
