The Birthday
Open with a young woman looking for her dog in the front yard. She runs into Klaus, who gives her a story about his car breaking down. When she doesn't buy it he ends up compelling her and forcing her to invite him inside. When they he get inside he asks her roommate about a man named Ray Sutton. The roommate tries to get away and runs smack into Stefan at the front door. The compelled woman tells them Sutton hangs out at a certain bar near the border. Klaus instructs Stefan to kill them both and leaves. Elena wakes up Jeremy who is late for work. She calls Caroline who is planning Elena's birthday party. Caroline also mentions an attack in Memphis they think could be Klaus. Alaric is still sleeping on Elena's couch where he says he's fine. We see Damon and Andie in the bathroom together. Elena shows up and references the Klaus lead. Damon says he should go since Klaus still thinks she's dead. After Elena leaves Andie tells Damon the floater victim had family in Tennessee and she can get him the address. Bonnie and Jeremy talk before his shift starts. We see that Jeremy is having visions of Vicki. Matt asks Jeremy to wait on Caroline and Tyler who have just sat in his section. Caroline tells Tyler his mother was staring at her recently. She tells Jeremy that Matt thinks she and Tyler are dating. Sutton arrives at his local bar and runs into Klaus and Stefan. Sutton is a werewolf. Klaus tells him he's a hybrid and wants to create more of himself. Klaus wants him to direct him to his pack. Since Sutton can't be compelled, it sounds like Stefan will be torturing him into giving up the information they want. Damon and Alaric arrive at the house. Inside they find the two women's bodies sitting on the couch. They've been decapitated but put back together, which Damon says is a sign Stefan killed them. Elena, Caroline and Tyler talk about Stefan. Elena calls her kiss with Stefan a "good-bye" kiss since she thought they were going to die. After Elena leaves Tyler says he has a date for the party. The both are feeling particularly randy these days. Damon prepares to torch the house and finds a trapdoor. He realizes a werewolf lived there. He drops the match. Cut to Ray still being tortured at the bar by Stefan while Klaus supervises. Stefan overhears a woman inform Klaus that Damon is looking for them. Stefan asks to leave, saying "I'll make sure that my brother doesn't bother us anymore." Damon gives Elena her old necklace before the party. Elana's party is much bigger than she wanted it to be. Jeremy and Matt share a joint. Jeremy says ever since he's come back from the dead he's been seeing "things." Damon and Alaric are standing outside the party. Elena walks out and says she wants Alaric to talk to Jeremy about his pot smoking. On her way out of the office somebody shines the spotlight on Andie. She panics and trips on her way out of the building. It turns out to be Stefan. She starts talking to him but he stares at her without saying a word. Matt and Caroline argue while watching Tyler and his date on the dance floor. Caroline compelle's his date and tells her to leave. He's pissed Elena tells Caroline she wants to leave before the cake. This leads to Caroline's admission that Elena's friends want her to stop worrying about Stefan and get on with her life. Elena finds a map of Damon's filled with articles and post-its and realizes he's been tracking Stefan without her. She calls him to ask about it and he hangs up on her. Damon walks into Andy's studio and sees Stefan. Stefan tells Damon he's supposed to let him go. Stefan shows Damon that he's forced Andy to stand at the edge of a catwalk high up near the ceiling. Stefan tells her to step off and grabs Damon so she ends up falling to her death. Damon rushes to her side and then realizes Stefan has left. After the party a stoned Jeremy offers to give a more stoned Matt a ride home. Before Matt gets in the car Jeremy sees a brief vision of Vicki. He sees her again in front of the car and suggests they walk. While Caroline and Tyler argue about what they want she leans in and kisses him. They leave together. Elena confronts Damon about the research of his she found in his closet. She asks about him trailing Klaus' victims and he corrects her that he's actually been tracking Stefan's victims. He tells her to stop waiting on Stefan. After more partying Mike starts to leave. He asks about what Jeremy saw and he admits to having visions of his sister. Jeremy's laughs off the notion of seeing ghosts as due to his head being "all messed up." Sutton has already told Klaus where his pack was. Klaus then feeds him some of his blood and knocks him unconscious. Stefan returns, talking a big game about not caring about anything anymore. Klaus doesn't think Stefan believes that but assures him every time he feeds it will get easier to "let go." Elena comes home to find Alaric packing up his stuff. He says he's not a role model and isn't going to stay there anymore. He thinks she can do everything better without him there. Cut to Caroline and Tyler fooling around. The clothes come off and they start having very supernatural sex. Damon destroys his room in a fit of rage. Stefan walks outside the bar into the parking lot and stares into the sky. He looks down at his phone. We see Elena getting ready for bed and placing her phone on the nightstand before walking into the bathroom. Stefan calls and she gets it on the third or fourth ring. He doesn't say anything but she knows it's him. "I love you, hold onto that," she tells him. "Never let that go." He nods silently. After sex Caroline sneaks out while Tyler is still asleep. Downstairs she runs into Mrs. Lockwood. She awkwardly says she going to leave, but as she turns Mrs. Lockwood shoots several darts into Caroline, sending her to the ground.
P recaps...The Hybrid
In Mississippi, Klaus puts a plan in motion that will give him even more power as a vampire-werewolf hybrid, but even with the unwilling participation of werewolf Ray Sutton, things don't go exactly as Klaus and Stefan had planned. Meanwhile, Damon and Alaric reluctantly go along with Elena's new strategy to find Stefan, leading Damon into a dangerous fight with an unexpected new enemy. Back in Mystic Falls, Jeremy turns to Matt for advice as he continues to try to understand what Vicki and Anna's ghosts want with him. Unaware that Caroline is in need of his help, Tyler faces an emotional confrontation with his mother over his relationship with Caroline.
