Mausam looks tailor-made for you. You get to sport four looks.
Yes, absolutely. And the four looks are all distinct. The first, that of a simple teenage Indian girl, required me to lose weight and wear minimal make-up, limited to mere under-eye corrections and little jhumkis for jewellery. The second season is in Scotland. The westernised look needed make-up, with my hair styled in varied manners. The third one is again Indian, but has starker colours and barer skin, with absolutely no make-up. You will see me how I am right now. In the fourth season, I am in my late twenties. So I put on a little weight, there is change in the body language and also in the way I speak.
Which is your favourite look?
The first one, because it took me the least amount of time to get ready.
Your character in the movie, Aayat, loves writing letters. How much of a writer are you yourself?
I like writing but whatever I write is over e-mails. When it's a loved one's birthday or anniversary, I write long notes or make these little scrap books and write in them. Besides, I love reading poems.
During the filming of Mausam, there were stories about Pankaj Kapur, the director, reprimanding you often for your unprofessional behaviour.
No, that's not true. He is the most harmless man ever. He is really sweet and knows how to deal with actors. People are crazy and write just about anything. These days, even if there is no fire, there is smoke everywhere.
In an age of fast-paced rom-coms, Mausam seems to be fitting into the classical mould.
Yes, but it is not overtly dramatic. Everything is very subtle, real and pure. There are no histrionics. Like all classics, it is beautiful and simple.
Your movies generate a lot of interest, but they haven't been blockbusters.
I got that hit with I Hate Luv Storys. It wasn't a Dabangg, but it did really well for its budget. What is more important to me is that people remember all my characters. I don't think it is important to have a blockbuster. I want to do successful commercial films which people like and that make some money. I will never do films which are termed as money-making projects. It's not me at all.
Is that the reason why you do such few films?
I do few films because there is more to me than being an actor. I have my dogs, my friends, books, TV shows, travel, fashion. At the end of the day, acting is not my life, it is just a job. I can't give up my life and youth for films. Ten years from now, I don't want to wonder where my twenties disappeared.
Did the negative publicity you garnered from your appearance on Koffee With Karan hamper you in any way?
There was nothing negative there. Actually people loved me on the show. Girls could identify with me and many of them came up to me and told me that I was spunky and honest. I just showed them that I am strong enough to survive in the industry and can do it despite being honest. At the end of the day, any publicity is good publicity.
But you did enrage Ranbir Kapoor's family. Did their remarks upset you?
Why should I be upset? It is their opinion. Unfortunately, my dad doesn't fight my battles for me. He thinks I am strong enough to handle them on my own.
