Om Namo Bhagavate Vasudevaya...

"I am the conscience in the heart
of all creatures
I am their beginning, their being,
their end,
I am the mind of the senses,
I am the radiant sun among lights
I am the song in sacred lore,
I am the king of deities
I am the priest of great seers?"

Lord%20KrishnaThis is how Lord Krishna describes God in the Holy Bhagavad Gita. And to most Hindus he is the God himself, the Supreme Being, the Absolute, the Brahman, the Purna Purushotam. The great exponent of the Gita, Krishna is the ninth and the complete incarnate of Vishnu, the Godhead of the Hindu Trinity of deities. Of all the Vishnu avatars he is the most popular, and perhaps of all Hindu gods the one closest to the heart of the masses.

The Importance of Being Krishna...
Krishna has influenced the Indian thought, life and culture in myriad ways. He has influenced not only its religion and philosophy, but also into its mysticism and literature,
painting and sculpture, dance and music, and all aspects of Indian folklore.

The birthday of such a favourite deity is bound to be a special occasion for the Hindus, who consider Krishna their leader, hero, protector, philosopher, teacher and friend all rolled into one.

The festival of Krishna Janmashtami is the celebration of Lord Krishna's birthday. Krishna, is a unique character in Hindu history. He was naughty in his childhood days and proved to be a profound philosopher in his adulthood as illustrated by the Bhagwad Geeta.

The Time of the Lord...

Krishna took birth at midnight on the ashtami or the 8th day of the Krishnapaksha or dark fortnight in the Hindu month of Shravan (August-September) eight days after Raksha Bandhan. This auspicious day is called Janmashtami. It was the rainy season in India and Krishna was born at midnight, in the prison of Kansa, during the middle of a perilous rain and storm. Thus goes the story of Krishna's birth.

Kansa, a despot, was then the king of Mathura. He had imprisoned his father in order to become the king. Devaki was Kansa's sister and was married to a noble man Vasudeva. Kansa one day heard a heavenly voice, saying, " Kansa, your days of tyranny will soon be over, you will be killed by the eighth child of Devaki." Kansa got frightened. He immediately imprisoned Devaki and Vasudeva. He did not want to take any chance and killed at birth each and every child of Devaki, until the time came for the delivery of the eighth child. To feel more secured, Kansa increased the number of prison guards, kept strict vigilance and put Vasudeva in chains. But God planned otherwise.

At midnight when the eighth child was born, the guards fell fast asleep and Vasudeva's chain fell off his hands and feet. Wasting no time, Vasudeva picked up the newborn baby, and carrying it in a basket, he started towards Gokul. Gokul was a village of cowherds, located across the Yamuna river, where his friend Nanda lived. It was a dark stormy night with blinding rain continuously pouring from the sky. When Vasudeva reached the bank of river Yamuna, the river was in spate. The wind and storm were blowing wild, and Vasudeva was in a fix.

" Lord, what should I do," said Vasudeva in a hopeless voice. Suddenly a miracle happened, the river parted and Vasudeva walked over the river bed. Throughout the way Vasudeva and the baby were protected from rain by the hood of the great eternal snake, Vasuki. Finally, Vasudeva reached Nanda's house.

Upon reaching Nanda's house Vasudeva found the mother, Yashoda, and her newborn baby girl in deep sleep. He had no time to think. He quickly exchanged the babies and returned to the prison with the infant girl, while the guards were still asleep.

As soon as Vasudeva entered the prison cell, the door got locked behind him and he was chained again as if nothing happened in between. The guards woke up and heard the cry of the baby. Kansa was immediately informed and he came running to kill the child. But to his utter surprise he found it to be a girl and not a boy, as he expected. Devaki begged for the newborn baby's life from her brother.

" What can a girl do to you Kansa ? Spare her life, please ! " appealed Devaki, lying at the feet of her brother. The inhuman Kansa did not pay attention to the appeal. As he was ready to kill the baby by smashing its head on a big boulder, the child slipped out of his hand and flew towards the sky.

At that moment, a heavenly voice was heard, " Kansa, the one who shall destroy you still lives. He is growing in Gokul. " Next morning, Nanda and his wife Yashoda discovered the boy, left by Vasudeva, lying in the crib. They were a little puzzled but did not want to fuss about it because they might loose the baby. The baby was of dark complexion, so he was named Krishna.
Indian as well as Western scholars have now accepted the period between 3200 and 3100 BC as the period in which Lord Krishna lived on earth. We are celebrating 5237 birthday of Shri krishna.

(1)
"Vasudeva Sutam Devam, Kansa Chaanuuramardanam

Devaki Paramaanandam Krishnam Vande Jagad Gurum"

Meaning: Krishna is the Supreme Lord, Son of Devaki (Sister of Kansa) and Vasudeva. He is the slayer of Kansa and Chanur. I bow to such great lord and may god bless me with his grace always.

(2)
"Aakashaath Patitam Toyam, Yathaa Gachchhati Saagaram

Sarvadeva Namaskaaraam, Keshavam Pratigachchhati"

Meaning: Lord Krishna is great. Just as every rain drop that falls from the sky flows into the Ocean, in the same way every prayer offered to any deity flows to Lord Krishna. I bow to such great Lord Krishna.

(3)
Achutham Keyshavam Rama Narayanam
Krishna Damodaram Vasudevam Harim
Shridharam Madhavam Gopika Vallabham
Janaki Nayakam Ramachandram Bhajey

Meaning: Oh ! Imperishable Lord, Let me constantly recite your holy names such as KESHAVA, RAMA, DAMODARA, NARAYANA, SRIDHARA, MADHAVA, KRISHNA, RAMACHANDRA the beloved of Janaki.

Krishna is an incarnation of Lord Vishnu...

Meaning of Krishna... Krishna means the one who attracts, 'aakarshit ati te Krishna'. Krishna attracts people not only by the matchless beauty of his form. He attracts people by his music, his dance, his sports and his words...But one must need to love Him first. Understanding follows...

Krishna is the 'The Dark One' Krishna's colour is dark blue.

The color blue is associated with the ' infinite' like the blue sky.

Krishna's favorite color of 'dress' is yellow.

Yellow is the color of the Earth. I have read that this is because, the earth when introduced into a colorless flame emits a yellow hue.

The Blue colour of the sky and the yellow colour of the Earth could indicate that the Pure and Infinite Consciousness of Krishna has descended on earth to play a human role.

This fast is considered inevitable for the people inclined towards Sanatan Dharma. The fast is observed on this day by them and the hymns of lord Krishna are heard. The processions of Krishna Lila are decorated in home and in temples. The idol of lord Krishna or Shaligram is offered milk, curd, honey and water of Yamuna. Lord Krishna is worshipped by the Shodashopchar method on this day. Baby Krishna is decorated and rocked in a cradle. Devotees observe the fast till middle of the night. Hymns of lord Krishna are sung on the night of Janamashtmi and at mid-night the celebrations of the birth of lord Krishna are conclude with the sound of conch and the bells.

Prasada of Chappan Bhog

Many delicious dishes are prepared on the day of Janamashtmi. Milk and deserts made with milk are eaten on this day. Lord Krishna loved milk and butter. That is why, sweet dishes like kheer, Pede, butter and mishri are made and eaten on this day. The fast of Janamashtmi completes after the birth of lord Krishna by taking the Prasada.

Mohratri

The night of Sri Krishna Janamasthmi is also known as Mohratri. An individual can attain the salvation by chanting the name of Yogeshwar Sri Krishna at this night. The virtues of a person are increased by observing this fast.

The birth festival of lord Krishna sends the message of love and harmony to whole world.

Dahi - Handi Festival

The houses and temples are decorated beautifully on the day of Janamashtmi. This festival is also known as Krishnashtmi or Gokulashtmi. The hymns of lord Krishna are sung on this day and Ras Lilas are organized. Along with this, the ceremony of Dahi-Handi is also organized in which curd and butter is kept in an earthen pot and is hanged at a height. This pot is meant to be broken. This arrangement is known as ceremony of Dahi-Handi and whoever breaks this pot and takes the things inside it is awarded with a prize. This ceremony takes place in Maharashtra on Janamasthmi. Various kinds of ceremonies and competitions are seen in Maharashtra on this day.

Importance Of Janmashtami

Yada Yada is Dharamasya Glanirbhavati Bharata.

Abhyutthanamadharmasya Tadatmanam Srijammyham.

Paritrayanaya Vinashayam Cha Dushtkritam.

Dharamsanthapanarthaya Sambhavami Yuge Yuge.

Through this famous saying of Geeta, lord Krishna says that whenever any harm to religion happens, I take birth or incarnation on this earth and establish religion by destroying the irreligious activities.

That is why, lord Vishnu takes birth in some form or the other and destroy the evil whenever the terror of demons and devils is dominant. The incarnation of lord Krishna is most important among all the incarnations of lord Vishnu. The sacred day on which lord Krishna took birth is celebrated as Sri Krishna Janamashtmi.
