chapter 4: The DULHA

Khurana Mansion- New York, USA : 2 weeks back

Kripa was running behind her little daughter, riya around the huge mansion. "riya, stop running around little one!!!", she called out, tired of chasing the small kid. Kripa smiled when her daughter stopped and looked at her. "you are just like your dad!!!", she declared. Riya just smiled. The little girl was hardly more than 2 years old, with black long curls swinging across her small shoulders. Cuteness redefined on her baby face, with a voluptuous naughtiness in her little eyes, twinkled. Her laughter was violet and was the eye candy of the whole family. Her smile mesmerized kripa each and every time. Kripa walked upto her little angel, "you cannot run around holding that picture in ur little hands riya", she said picking riya up in her arms.

Riya's face fell, "why not mamma?" Kripa smiled, "it's a very important thing riya, I need to show it to your boyfriend!!!" Riya blushed. A chuckle escaped from kripa's lips. "now will you please hand it over to me angel???" she pleaded her daughter. Riya made a face but she obliged and handed the picture to her mom. "that's like my little baby, now off you go and play in the attic!!!" kripa put her daughter down, who ran across the long corridor towards the stairs. "be careful", kripa called out from behind but riya was already out of sight.

Kripa walked to her parents' room and knocked on the door. "come in", madhu called out from inside. Kripa walked in with a smile," hey mom, good morning!" Madhu was very much indian and till date she has never changed her attire from saree. Probably it was one of the things, why kripa's dad Veer always admired madhu. "good morning dear! So what brings you here so early in the morning?", madhu asked getting up from her living room couch and keeping the newspaper down. Kripa sat beside her and asked "where's dad?". Madhu smiled, "as if you don't know where he would be!". Kripa agreed "right, will he ever stop going out with mickey every hour???', she asked in doubt. Mickey was the pet dog of the khurana's. madhu laughed at her qn. "I guess not, your father loves pets, which you are well aware of already my dear!", madhu gave a genuine answer.

Kripa rolled her eyes, "and here I am to talk abt something very important!". " when my child comes searching for me, how can I not be there for her?", veer said entering the room with a bright smile on his face. "daddy", kripa got up and ran towards veer and hugged him. He just laughed at the thought how much a kid his daughter still was. "dad", she turned to madhu,"mom", looked at veer and continued, "you are going to be so proud of me today". Madhu and veer both exchanged glances. Kripa smiled sheepishly, knowing she had already won it.

Next day:

Riya rushed into her "BF" 's room crying. Maan the eldest child of the khurana's was concerned looking at his niece. "oh why is my sweetheart crying???", he picked her up in his arms gently and wiped off the fat tears rolling down her cheeks and gave a peck on her forehead. "mom told that you are no longer my boyfriend!!!", riya declared. Maan chuckled at her innocence. Kripa and her tantrums, he thoughts. He couldn't imagine how she got married to arjun and had a baby too??? Kripa herself was very much a kid. He rolled his eyes and tried calming riya. Maan was a cardiologist doctor. He was 27, intelligent, qualified, well mannered, successful, understanding, caring, soft hearted and most handsome doctor you could ever find. His colleagues and patients often defined him as "golden godman" for his deeds. He understood everyone's emotions so well. He was just perfect for his job!!! Even though he was handsome, he never had fling because he felt it was against his culture. He was indian and he could not spoil his country's name. such was his plight in his life!!!

When riya calmed down, he gave her a chocolate and asked her to go play. She ran off happily chirping. Maan just smiled, just then kripa entered the room smiling at her brother. Maan looked at her and in a moment he knew, "ah, the victory smile!". He chukcled. "I wonder what you did this time?", he asked her without a hitch. Kripa smiled, "I found you a bride". Maan froze and all the blood flushed from his face as he turned pale. "get back to ur senses bro, I wont talk much nor will I explain things about the girl. I'll just keep her photo and information on the table. The decision lies with you. I feel she's just perfect for you, actually everyone does. I am glad Suresh uncle told me about her. That's it, I'am keeping it here", kripa put down the envelope on the marble table, patted maan's back and left the place smiling.

Maan dint know how to react to what was happening. He was neither happy nor sad, he was just shocked. All he expected was a small warning before the tornado settled down on him! This was more of a earthquake. He sat down on the couch wondering how he should react. He dint have a fling till now, true but he did have about how his life partner should be. Nobody asked him about his choice and that was what bothered him. He took a few deep breaths and got up from his chair, took the envelope in his hands and walked out of the room towards his parents' room. He knew veer would be out at this hour. He went in without knocking. Madhu was placing flowers in the vase when she saw maan standing at the door with the envelope in his hands. She knew! She smiled, "come in maan, I was expecting you!". Maan didn't smile, he just walked towards the couch and sat down, madhu sat beside him.

She knew the turmoil he was in after kripa broke the news to him. she turned towards him, took his hands in hers and held them there with love and care. "look at me maan", was all she said. Maan obeyed and looked at his mother expressionless. Madhu placed a hand on his cheek and smiled, "I know why you are here. You must be wondering why in the world did I not ask you before choosing a girl for you. You are right, I should have. I apologise for that". Maan tried to speak but she silenced him with her eyes. "you know maan, god decides everything. We are just mere actors in his game. Yesterday when kripa told me about this, I was as perplexed as you are now but when I saw the picture and came to know about the girl, I knew, she was the one for you. I might be wrong as well because the choice lies with you. But maan, what's wrong in giving a chance??? Who knows you might as well fall for her in the first go", she smiled. "but mom", maan started but madhu cut him in,"no maan, for once I want you to listen to me. All these years I have listened to you patiently without haste. Today I want you to do the same. The decision lies with you. Take as much time as you want to. It's the question of your whole life!", she patted his back and got up and left the room allowing maan some space and thoughts to ponder over.

Maan looked here and there, thought deeply for a while then slowly he opened the envelope. Everything was still around him. He took out the picture and turned the front side to look into it. He stared intently at the person's features in the picture. The hazel eyes filled with mischievousness, spoke everything so clearly. He wondered how that was possible??? Her smile was enchanting and the one that could linger in your mind for the whole day. He smiled. Her skin was clear and supple like a baby. After taking in all her features into account, he closed his eyes, trying to find a flaw. But then he couldn't, she was a beauty he had never seen. Her face lingered in his memory for long. This was not enough for him, he wanted to know about her. He took out the remaining content of the envelope and opened it. "GEET", he mumbled. PERFECT NAME, he thought if only he could hear her voice. "a doctor", PERFECT AGAIN, he smiled. He went through other details, put down the picture and letter down on the table and leaned back on the couch closing his eyes slowly. He suddenly saw her face, he smiled. He knew, his family was right, she was the one for him. LOVE at first sight, he chuckled at the very thought but he was just more than happy about it right now. His heart was dancing in harmony, something he had never experienced in his whole life. A strange feeling was creeping through his body, he dint bother, he just enjoyed every bit of it thinking "MAAN SINGH KHURANA IS IN LOVE!!!".
