I created this topic to ensure that this bombastic issue isn't lost in a sea of threads. I believe that this social issue deserves its own discussion topic. I am writing this topic to bring to light about domestic abuse.
SNS viewers have different opinions and views about Gopi's character on SNS. Some of us have empathized and sympathized over Gopi's plight, expressed disdain and frustration towards her victimization. Forum members have the right to their opinion. I may not always agree with specific statements, but it does not diminish my respect for the policies of the forum.
Abuse is multifaceted. SNS highlights domestic abuse. Domestic abuse does not discriminate based on age, ethnicity, class, creed, sex, race, religion, etc. It happens to hundreds and thousands of people all over the world. Abuse can be emotional, verbal or physical. The repercussions of which are intended to erode the victim's self-esteem and self-worth. Victims of abuse are traumatized by feelings of entrapment, guilt, shame, helplessness, powerlessness, and even self-victimization. They may be consumed by fear and codependency towards the abuser. Victims may suffer from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) which is a manifestation of anxiety disorder that affects the neurotransmitters in the brain. The psychological defacement of one's soul can take years, if not a lifetime, to heal. Victims of abuse need rehabilitation - education to comprehend that they are not the "cause" of violence, support groups, and professional help. Similarly, the perpetrator of abuse also requires help with anger management and "rewiring" towards a healthier and productive relationships. There is HOPE for both victim and victimizer.
Many a times, SNS has overstepped the fine line between accentuating versus hyperbolizing domestic abuse. I'd like to see a paradigm shift in the social message SNS projects to the viewers. It is plausible to entertain the audience while championing an important social cause.
There is an unmitigated demarcation in the outlook of viewers towards victims of domestic violence. I do not wish to patronize my fellow compatriots on this delightful forum. Forum members have the right to voice their opinion. The intent of this topic is to urge members to research domestic abuse/violence. There are various resources on the web (Mayo Clinic, Psychology Today, American Psychology Association, International Directory of Domestic Violence Agencies, etc.) that provide in-depth information about this important social message.
SNS' approach towards domestic abuse has often been discouraging and hard to digest. I also want to add that, albeit slow, SNS is FINALLY showing seeds of change in dealing with Gopi's character development and improvement in the quality of her life. There's still an arduous journey (for both the character and the show's audience) as we anxiously await storylines that empower women in dire conditions. I am looking forward to seeing the creatives truly vest their heart and soul into promoting a great social message versus romanticizing violence. Keeping my fingers crossed...
