I too, think Istila makes a very good point...but the reality is that TV does in fact influence many for whom these characters seem real or even familiar in parts...some get influenced by the story, some the characters, some the actors...it is an unfortunate reality.

However, there are many who comment without watching and spend time more to chat with their friends, virtual or known...and I guess the serial then becomes the subject around which the chatter takes place.

I too, feel that with the viewership being highest in the 9 -18 category...a lot of the junk shown is not good but members of the IF stopping to watch will not impact the show at all...at least the members say their piece...good or bad...for or against... whether we agree or not with what is shown or not shown...whereas those who cannot differentiate between "entertainment and worthless entertainment" are the ones to worry about.

We all have been writing about the ill effects of the visual media on the youth and how the thin line between comprehending and differentiating real from unreal is blurring, and the glorification of evil has led kids craving for more because that has a shock value and gives them a false sense of security that doing or supporting wrong things is not so wrong after all and actually it is cool and they do not want to bother about the means as long as it justifies the end. This is what the makers of movies and serials show, in order to get TRPs and while they laugh all the way to the bank, the society suffers the consequences. They also claim that they show only what is happening in the society, in order to justify their glorification of crimes and abnormal behaviour.

Here are the excerpts from a recent article in the Times of India by Haimanti Mukherjee, TNN:

The heroes of our times have been treading on the grey side for almost two decades since Shah Rukh Khan stammered his way into the audience's hearts with Darr. But it's the women, who are walking the wild side these days and getting maximum attention for it on and off the screen.

In India, a 20-year-old model Poonam Pandey's declaration of stripping if India won the Cricket World Cup had the channels beaming her pictures all over India. The worse the catfights got between Big Boss participants Shweta Tiwari and Dolly Bindra, the more they became the talking point. TV shows like Roadies' TRPs thrive on Raghu Ram hurling expletives at the hopefuls and participants in the show. The behaviour of young girls on shows like Emotional Atyachar and Crunch would leave most parents traumatised.

Bejoy Nambiar, the director of Shaitan, a film about a group of youngsters with questionable morals and lack of conscience, says, "I wasn't sure whether my film would have been acceptable even while releasing it, but the audiences are demanding experimental films which push the envelope. After all, movies only resonate what's happening in society. Even as Ram Gopal Varma, the director of Not a Love Story, comes under fire over the timing of the film's publicity and offering Susairaj a film role, one cannot disagree that the grey area that audiences once craved for may be getting more sinister by the day.

Thank you all, for your posts while I've been away. I think you are all giving great input. Whether we are Muslim, Hindu or Christian, it seems we have some great common sense values to share.

I used to remember that Indian Films were known for their simplicity and family orientated styles:

"...common storylines of good vs evil ... The films were generally family orientated and the plot kept simple so that even the rural villager would find it easy to relate to. There has however, been a gradual shift in film style that has threatened the values and of the Indian society."

It is a real shame that this is happening in our societies. What has happened to good character and morals? It seems that these producers are listening to Shaytan, and are one step ahead of western media in showing filth & vice to obtain more material wealth.

I agree with all you said and also with this statement:
