...kya kya na bana, dilbar...

I've just been thinking that loving Gulaal - three men have done that on htis show - seems to have a curiously noble effect on the men who love her.

Vasant was great all through. I've said before what a fondness I have for him... people normally think straight is boring but Vasant was ramrod straight and so much fun. Maryada purushottam Ram - a good son, a good brother, a fun lover, a caring husband, a committed citizen - he counted the cost of nothing if he was doing the giving. Gulaal enhanced his life but I cannot give her CREDIT for the way Vasant was. That was just him.

It's a different case with Dushyant. BADASS. A taker. Selfish, powerful, devious, obsessive. He couldn't get over the fact that he couldn't get Gulaal, and tried to wrest her from fate. Today he lives out his repentence of that act, of the murder of his brother. He has atoned and atoned - given to the village, given to the family, given to Gulaal, to everyone around him without considering himself. Someone on this forum called him a Karmayogi. They were right. Dushyant does his actions without a single selfish motive today - if it is needed, he is there to do it. He does it with such a lovely attitude - not morose, not angst ridden, not grim - he's steadfast and pure.

Kesar? He wanted Gulaal too. He sulked, threw tantrums, raised hell. But he had a change of heart and turned his love around from being something he wanted to something he wanted to give. Yesterday proved the pureness of his motives too - he is pleasing Gulaal because it gives him pleasure, not because he will get something from it. Kesar has learnt to love - the right way. To stretch the analogy slightly he is something of a Bhakti yogi, interesting in loving, not receiving.

What is it about Gulaal that draws out the higher selves in these men? She has been unlikeable (to me) these past few weeks but looking her the entire story, the truth is that Gulaal is an upstanding woman. She is strong, she is good, she is kind, she puts other people at the top of her lists. She is able to love with rare passion, fight for that love, she is able to forgive the man who did her grievous wrong, she is able to go after goals in an unshakeable determination, she is capable of immense devotion. She is articulate, she is full of vitality. She is a leader, a fighter, an opinion maker.

She has made a few mistakes but it doesn't take away from the immense character she is. I suppose the men who love her appreciate that. She inspires them to be better. So much that they love her ideals even more than they love her. That is no small achievement.

For the Gul Kes love story to work, she needs to drop a few of her prejudices, her ego, her habits, her old ideas. But Gulaal has that strength. Only, she should learn the art of changing direction from the men in her life. They have shown her how. She needs to learn it.

There is a lot to admire in Gulaal despite the scrutiny her character has gone under in the recent past. She has certain principles which she will stand for even if they go against what society deems as 'correct'. For me personally, I've always found her warmth the most endearing. She has a lot of love inside her and it's almost overwhelming. I think that's what attracted all 3 men to her along with the zest and passion she had for life. As a character, her flaws make her more appealing to me as a viewer.

Its these things that i love about Gulaal - she is everything - depth to her is immense, importantly all this stems from such strength she has, and had to have...
I cant ever dislike her as you say looking at her entire story/journey and how she has shaped and built up, it what makes Gulaal and has made her.. i can see that and understand that
She is a fascinating woman and character, and Manasi is just wonderful as her👏
I agree about the 3 men, Vasant was the ideal man (and like you i am also fond of him), D is the redemption man, and Kesar is just the passionate man, everything he does, and is and loves with a passion, so all he is comes with such passion (intensity, innocence, complex - so many other things he posesses) - he blows you away with his mature talks on and simplicity how he puts it across, and how his world centres around Gulaal - and today he has understood what exactly love entails and what it means to give happiness and to gain happiness from that

Gulaal as a character is one of the most fascinating and strong leading ladies of tellydom I guess... I am yet to see another character so interesting that I would sit and think about her motives and thoughts ... her circumstances are unique and so is her personality... she has taken some extraordinary decisions in her life... be it leaving her house to go help another village (despite the enmity), loved like mad... and then taken the controversial decision of DV with a 12 year old...

There are many reasons to look upto the woman she is in essence, giving, loving, very caring... strong willed and loyal to the core... she has such determination to keep her family together, that she is willing to not disclose the person behind such an immensely selfish and cruel act ... needs a lot of guts and strength of mind...

Though she has been stubborn as a mule off late, but it could also be her loyalty towards Vasant's memories and her love for him... I am sure she is intelligent and such a warm person that despite her stupidities, she will come around.. and realise the immense possibilities life is yet to offer her...

Yes, her circumstances have been extraordinary haven't they and so also the decisions she has taken. In fact, I feel like it's a large-screen cinemascope life - cataclysmic changes, huge moral dilemmas, strong loves, intense situations...

Gulaal sort of froze the frames of her life that had Vasant in them. she thought she was now living out a penance, but that happiness was no longer for her. But there is Kesar yet...

Lennie, you're right - Manasi depicts Gulaal in all her shades, so so well! how easily she slipped into girl mode with her friends, how rapidly she pokered up again. How vivacious she was with Vasant, how hot and bothered she is now! 😆
Good job, Manasi!

Very true. she's got flaws but by jove, she's never boring.
I just have to compare with the bovine placidity of some other lead heroines and I have to shudder in self defence.
Thank heavens for Gulaal! 😆

What a beautiful post to read that was 👏 Special mention of the following lines:

Gulaal enhanced his life but I cannot give her CREDIT for the way Vasant was. That was just him.

He does it with such a lovely attitude - not morose, not angst ridden, not grim - he's steadfast and pure.

turned his love around from being something he wanted to something he wanted to give.

It sums up the situation of all 3 men in Gulaal's life. The question still remains, what is it about her, that draws out the best in them? In my personal opinion, it is her ability to give a 100% of what she gives. For Vasant, it was her life (I say life, because that is what she has given Vasant - she was willing to, when she first set off with him for the water hunt, she took her vows to do the same, and even after he passed away, he treated his dream as his person and dedicated herself to it. Even after GK get together, that scenario will not cease to be!); for Dushyant it is her trust (Even if she never could bring herself to forgive him, her trust is a 100%. She trusts his reform completely and resolutely, and gives it her unhesitating nod - for times like say the Sarpanch elelction, or much after over the DV decisions which she does not blame him for, for a second, nor deems him 'wrong' or 'biased'); finally for Kesar, it is her love. (Her love has taken various forms for him - from that mollycoddling bestowed on a younger child, to the sense of protection and dependence which co-existed, to a brief phase of submission followed by avoidance, hatred, pretense, friendship, extreme hurt... and finally hopefully some day, love in it's love way. Love has changed it's form between Gulaal and Kesar, but I have perceived its good and bad forms only as her innate love for him. It is unique in how it evolves from one form to another, and sports hence a continuous growth process. At the height of her inner battle too, she cannot ignore their bond. When she tries to build up the Vasant wall in between, it's only a feeble attempt of letting that love play its games because she cannot deny the bond no matter what! Interestingly, it is the reason his words don't stop haunting her - whether she agrees with them like yesterday, or disagrees like the many times prior. Hence what hangs in her head like an obsession is the 'thought of his love for her' which she cannot rid herself off. She could not, even when he was a long way to confessing it after he'd only just come back and shown intuitive signs of being attracted. She does try to run away... in vain.)

Her flaws only add to her charm. I could never hate her, infact wondered at the strong anti-Gulaal sentiments expressed in the forum. Don't know if it is only me...I could relate to her...could relate to her every single move and feeling. I look upon her characterisation as so genuine considering the kind of situations and experiences she had to go through. She is one independant woman...doesn't take crap from anybody unless she chooses to. Wonderful job by the CV's. And ofcourse Manasi is phenomenal as Gulaal.
