With Gulaal disturbed and troubled by the stamped issue of confirmation from her friends, apart from her own part realization, that Kesar's love is not mere attraction or infatuation but indeed love, it is one last attempt to prove herself right and prove Kesar wrong. Such a sad start in picking a silly reason to start the conversation asking him why he brought the flowers for her.
When Kesar admits he had brought it for her because she liked white flowers, it was the first blow to her that it was only for her that he had brought it for. She heard what she did not want to hear. Kesar wants to share the happiness in learning about one more of her interests from her friend that he goes ahead to explain how he knew her choice. He also explains why he brought them for her (because he saw her worried) and he wanted her happiness even after her friends left. He explains further that he was unable to save it exclusively for her and was forced to share with others unwillingly.
This scene showed Kesar's happiness in explaining to Gulaal the how, why and what for he brought the flowers, the excitement in learning her choice, mocking his own folly at sharing the flowers mixed with an apology in distributing something that was to her liking. And Kesar was not really worried about how and what all he did, he was only interested in the end result. Did it make her happy? That was what he meant when he said " Tu yeh sab jaankar kya karegi, tujhe phool pasand aaye na? Bas!!! yehi bahut hai.
His smile slowly starts fading away when she starts her accusatory tone, he nods in approval and support saying he did take her to panchayat to release her forever from this bondage, gets confused when she asks why he was bending over backwards to make her happy, slowly realizes where she was getting to because he has already experienced this before. He is in a way fearing that he has been misunderstood yet again, gets shocked when she mentions it as his drama/naatak , nods his head in disapproval when she questions if it was his intention to change her perception of him, painfully and hurtfully looks at her as she continues lashing out at him and gets the final blow when he hears from her if he hopes that she would agree to take him as her husband at the end of three months. That killed him from within once again. The hands holding the flowers drop and he is totally astonished at her words. He takes in a moment for her words to sink in and also to compose himself before he could say anything to her and when he does it is out of sheer shock when he asks her 'Yeh tu ne kya keh diya?" because the shock was beyond anything that was to his comprehension, it was utter disbelief at what Gulaal just lashed out as accusations. What hurt him more was the fact that she felt it was all a "dikhava", again it was demeaning his genuine feelings for her.Even without the love that he claimed, Kesar would care for her and he felt hurt that she names it as "dikhava". Kesar genuinely attempts to clear her doubt saying there weren't any selfish motives behind his actions. Gulaal did look regretful in that scene.
With this explanation, Kesar drags himself near to the cabinet and places the flowers in front of the photo of his and Vasant's. To me it appeared that the flowers he brought for cheering her up was left there because it adorned the picture that carried the image of the deceased person Vasant and the image of that young Kesar whose innate self was once again destroyed when his genuine concern for her was quashed yet again as selfishness.
I love the rendition here; the dialogue delivery is just superb. Once more Kesar declared that he still loved her and that he would always love her. He tells her that he did realize it late that love is not always about getting what you want but about giving away. We find a mellowed down Gulaal who was no more angry hearing his confession yet again. He admits he decided to give away what she wanted; her freedom. He explains that he felt the panchayat's three month's grace period was his final chance to make up for all the pain he had given her and give her three months of little and simple happiness. When he said "Ek hi mauka", it was clearly understood that he did not believe about Gulaal remaining his wife after the three months and hence the LAST CHANCE to give her happiness that she so deserved.
Gulaal did appear regretful throughout. But what I liked was the fact the she actually LISTENED to him this time and she genuinely wanted answers rather than her usual habit of putting aside or brushing aside obvious facts. It was Kesar's total resignation the way Kesar says with a sigh "Sach kehete hain" and after a brief pause continues "ki zyada meetha bhi zahar ban jaata hai", his only mistake was in wanting to give her happiness, and her problem was to always weigh his deeds on a scale and to decide that Less or More, he is always wrong, either partly wrong or fully wrong but WRONG.
It was a wonderful repetition of the fact by Kesar himself that the mistake was not in his thoughts but in her perception about him. Kesar was too hurt that though he tries to put aside all the insult she hurls at him and still tries to make her happy, she goes one step further to make him feel it was a mistake whatsoever. Gulaal is dumbfounded and speechless. Though Kesar spoke nothing but the truth, the highlight of this episode is when he said " Mei tujhse pyaar karta hoon, yeh baat mere man se zyada, tere dimaag mei har waqt rehti hai". As I had written in Reemz's thread too, the article which we read made more sense to me today when Kesar said that she is not letting go of that reality that he loves her, is not moving on from the fact and not even allowing him to forget that fact and help him move ahead. So in fact it was not about moving away but moving ahead in spite of the fact Kesar does love Gulaal. Kesar was doing things for her because of the bond that they shared and Gulaal has totally forgotten that aspect. By constantly reminding him and herself about Kesar's LOVE for Gulaal, she does not allow him to remind himself that there IS a bond that they share which is beyond these named relationships as DEVER-BABHI, PATI-PATNI. He still believes that it does exist but he corrects himself saying "Ya kabhi tha", a BOND THAT WAS because she doesn't remember any of it. Kesar reminding her of the bond between them leaves her totally speechless because she has so long missed that factor because she has been too lost in the fact that Kesar LOVES her and she perceives it only as the Pati-Patni love now that he is grown up and was insisting on remaining husband and wife. In her confusion over this aspect of love, Gulaal has skipped the thought that there is something that binds them together beyond these named relationships.
As Kesar walks away, he is hurt because he is always being misunderstood and also about losing that special bond that they once shared. When she tries to speak to him, he dismisses her saying she has said what she wanted to, and now he would from that minute stay away from her. Kesar's tone is so sorrowful especially when he says "tujhse door rahunga" because that is what hurts him most, to stay away from her. After all that she metes out to him, it still hurts him when he mentions about being away from her. And when he says this, it is so clear that all he yearns for is that love from her that is anything but wifely love that she so easily accuses him of as his need.
At this point he says with his staying away there would be no attempt on his part to make her happy as well as no reason for her to have any misunderstanding. With a "Teekh hai? Ab khush?" he is once again being selfless in giving her what she needs which is not to interfere in her life that makes her uneasy. He goes on to say probably she would find her happiness by his action.
Kesar, be brave, ignore her!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Neil, absolutely fantastic rendition.
